Hey,

I rebuilt a fwd engine to put in my awd. Im realizing now that the drivers side carrier bearing wont bolt up to block! What are my options to get this to work? I drive a 90 tsi

I used the search but most of these threads trail off topic

Or use the spacer Mitsubishi designed and used in AWD DSMs equipped without A/C. The part number is MB297732.

Equal Length Half Shafts Mod (AWD axle in a FWD)
Parts needed:

  • AWD intermediate shaft
  • AWD Drivers side axle
  • 1 MD707184 1g FWD output shaft seal
  • 2 MB297860 Bolts which attach the intermediate shaft to the block
  • 2 MF450406 Lock washers for the above bolts
  • 1 MB297732 Spacer which is only needed if A/C compressor bracket is removed
  • 2.3 quarts of transmission fluid (SAE 75W-85W gear oil was recommended from the factory)(Redline MT-90 is recommended by most DSM transmission specialists).

So im having some issues. The old bolts are not threading in at all. It feels like this block is threaded differently, and one of the bolt holes is smaller than the other. They line up perfectly though. Any input?

Update:

So im still having an issue. I've pulled up some pics and double checked. Looks like the passenger side bolt hole that lines up with the carrier bearing isnt tapped at all (circled in red on the right). I checked the depth and its the same as the other one so no broken bolts. It just has no thread. Im going to attach a picture of what im talking about. The bolt holes are circled in red. Is it possible that the fwd didnt come with this hole tapped for some reason or am i looking at the wrong hole?

My guess is that it was threaded, but time and weather took its toll on the hole since it was unused. You could try a heli-coil after you clean out what you can. A time-sert would also work (better). I believe the size is m10 x 1.25. Do not forget, use the OE bolts for the intermediate shaft bracket as they have a specific shoulder to ensure they do not shear or back-out.
