ARFWD tested his ffofh without plugging the "hole" and showed results (with proper gauges/readings) that he had more then enough oil pressure. His setup included no balance shafts and a ported relief valve on the ofh.

Your best bet is to invest in a proper oil pressure gauge, put the housing on unmodified, and see what your oil pressure looks like. :thumb:

Do not, I repeat do not, rely on the stock oil pressure gauge. It has already been shown that the ffofh places the pressure sensor after the oil filter, whereas your stock ofh is taking the pressure readings pre-filter. This is going to result in less pressure shown by the "stock gauge" with the ffofh vs. the stock ofh as it has been proven there is pressure loss from the oil filter.

Im due for an oil change and am going to use the big 1G filter instead of the smaller 2G style. More surface area should create a small drop and could possibly put my oil pressure at idle right where it needs to be stock.

Still debating tossing on the 90 air cooled or a modified water cooled (without water cooled) To see how much if any at all the pressure changes across the filter.
 
Why not the N/T housing ?

If you didn't see the other pics I posted earlier in this thread, the N/A housings also have a relief port just like the FFOFH. The relief is a little bit bigger though. Wanted a housing that doesn't have a relief that I have just sitting here.

Kels: You're awesome bro. But LSDSM introduced a valid point whether you turned out to be right or wrong. Just a way of looking at things. At one point you started claiming engine failure would be imminent without welding the hole closed. I think ya jumped the gun....well, a lot bud.

Here we go again. :boring: This proved nothing about me having low oil pressure and fixing it with plugging the hole. no pressure test was ever performed on the modded filter housing to make comparison. I will get them as soon as my upgraded manifold is done and on the car.

I would say the in kels case he needed and oil pressure reading off a real gauge measured from the gauge port on the OFH.

All I can say on the matter is what Shane said. Before you do anything get a pressure reading. If your above specs then leave it alone.

About kels claim that the FFOFH destroys bottom ends, we'll that's false and as I stated way earlier in the thread that there where other underlying problems.

THE FFWD housing has an option to put a second NPT port in the little round spot which would be PRE filter correct? If so, maybe get a measurement there? I think the most accurate place would be POST filter, as this is what your engine actually sees, but the factory gauge sending unit is calibrated for being PRE filter, so therefore it will be lower when measured POST filter. I plan on running my autometer gauge feed directly off the gauge port on the bottom, with the factory sending unit on a T fitting on the same port, and running my "IDJIT" light (yeah I just want it there because it IS there) off of the tapped port.

I saw that spot to and yes its pre filter. I was a little sketched wanting to drill and tap that spot on mine. Just doesn't seem like the metal is very thick there.

But yes I personally would like mine post filter to. The measurement your getting is pretty much what the bottom end will see.

If a shop like FFWD is willing to put their name on something like that, I don't generally have a problem doing that particular mod to my own housing. Now I'm not saying that shops have not done soething silly and shady before, this just seems simple enough to be OK.) It is with my machinist buddy right now, getting tapped as we speak (and re-tapping the bottom threads from BSPT to NPT for the Tee). It will be a while before I can report any results, as this is getting installed when I take the engine out of the current shell, and swap it to the new (read not covered in rust and farm and implement paint) shell, so that will be when its DONE FREAKING SNOWING!

Are you serious? Did you not see that ARFWD posted results and clearly has more then enough, if not too high, of oil pressure with an unmodified ffofh? Can you honestly say you disagree with properly testing your oil pressure to find out if modification is necessary? You accuse others of blindly following what was done before, but now ask others to blindly follow you?

I'm firmly starting to believe you could care less about the results and or performance, you are simply here for the argument.

180 degree question are you serious. All dude did was put a Guage on his housing and never tested the modified housing. Don't worry soon as mine other upgrades are done I will do my own test on mine and video tape it. Modified housing wasn't tested. So rethink your reply.

Hi keltalon. I have been following your threads well as the cam testing thread. Thanks for all the good information.
Now, I haven't posted anything on the ofh because it seems that its getting out of control.
Allow me to share some slight information with you.
I have recently switched to a 90 air to oil ofh and cooler. I had the stock before which was the water to oil cooler. Well as you know, that one has some flaws to it. The oil filter tends to come loose because of that center stud. So anyway. I switched to a ff ofh and eliminate the cooler. I found out that my stock oil pressure gauge wasn't as high as it was with the stock ofh.
I looked at the oil from the oil cap and it indeed had a smaller flow of oil. After a few months. I added an eternal cooler to it and the oil flow was even more lower. So I decided to remove the ofh and replace it with a 90s air to oil ofh. The results were as expected. My pressure went back to normal. My original thought was that the ff ofh was design for a smaller head and of course, it was design for a non turbo engine that has less parts to lubricate. This is my uneducated findings. I don't have any proof of this only what I noticed. I just thought i shared this with you. Therefore, I do believe that the ff ofh hole plays a significant role in pressure.
Thanks! When it happened to me I am the type of person who wouldn't give up and spent a week of sleepless nights studying the two housings and found the hole. It was a long shot when I plugged the hole as to wether this would actually bring pressure back up and when it did It was an exciting day. its good that you didn't get into this fight because all they would have done is attacked you. the only thing with attacking me is my history on the boards and reputation will still cause people to think about using the ffofh and this way purpose is served and maybe engines are something to be taken seriously. these engines cost too much to to build.[/QUOTE]
Absolutely. It seems that people here hate change or when you go against certain products that people are used to. Yes. That is yet another reason as to why I seldom post something. I was a lurker since 2002 and finally subscribed on 2004. But yeah. Just decided to switch to a 90s style ofh with external cooler. On top of the lower oil pressure, the ff ofh is very inconvenient when draining the oil on the 1g dsms. The driver side cross member is on the way of the oil drain. Not to mention that if you want to add an oil cooler, then it really gets bulky and cluttered and of course, the oil pressure goes down even more.
Either way. There will always be talkers and haters. Some people aren't open to things and they rather stay with what they know. This doesn't lead to innovation and it can also plague certain platform with the reputation of being problematic and unreliable.[/QUOTE]

There has never been a question as to whether or not welding that hole shut will increase oil pressure. The question was, with that hole unmodified will you have too low of oil pressure. As has been stated since the beginning, that will be setup dependent, and to truly know the answer to that question you must test your personal setup with a proper oil pressure measurement to know.

The result of Justin's test clearly proves that before modifying your ffofh you should test to know what your oil pressure is currently at. If you find that your oil pressure is to low, you should do a thorough check of your system to see why it is low. If you find no other issues, perhaps welding that hole shut would be worthwhile to gain oil pressure.


So your person pm'ing has the same problem you have, they are seeing the result of a pressure reading taken post-filter, compared to one pre-filter.

What is the need to waste a ofh by welding it when it's already proven that with the hole there oil pressure is higher than needed.

Yes we saw a big difference in oil stream at idle which has nothing to do with were pressure is read from.
Nobody's twisting your arm dude run the housing the way you want. Nothing was disproved you want it to be but sadly it's not. Darren sent out pm's and had some of his buddies to challenge the thread because of a stock pile of ffofh that aren't selling. But you know what people will still wonder and stay ways from it and they are the smart ones!

Oh by the way I modified 4 more this week. Thinking persons already know. Free of charge. If anyone wants their's modified just sent it to me no charge I will fix it!

This should absolutely destroy any shred of remaining credibility and induce much skepticism with every statement he makes from here on out.

But we've seen what his supporters use for lines of reasoning, and it's no wonder they stand by him. They just don't know any better.

So, until some Mod or Admin that gives a sh*t about the quality of the tech content here steps in and cuts this BS it will continue to go on.

We like to chase records and set new personal achievements. We don't rely on luck to get us by. We don't need to round up followers with false claims. Our followers have a respect and follow because they see the hard work, they see a reliability. They aren't ignorant to the factual numbers that are provided for them.

Ill be testing more. It'll be for a different thread. That way noobs that need good information won't have to get bored reading through this and jump on a mod that isn't needed. A mod that can cost them money they may not need to spend.

Before modifying anything, properly test your oil pressure to see if you need to modify anything.

I knew your test would be without bias being that you are for proving me wrong. If you in your right mind think hooking up a Guage to your car and not test the modded filter at the same time of said test is victory its not and is very shameful , shows ignorance and is one sided! Testing it with the hole plugged would simply show a higher oil pressure reading. Which has already been shown as higher then it needs to be without modifying the hole. And let's not forget this housing has already been modified by porting the relief valve which has been properly tested to show it lowers pressure! So there is no need to test it with your "modification" being it was shown it isn't needed on this engine setup.

The best answer to this whole debacle is what I typed above to pipnorcali.

It's not about "victory" or saving face for the rest of us.

It's about debunking wild claims. Notice he didn't spin any bearings? LOL

The whole purpose was to find out whether or not the unmodded FFOFH provided adequate oil flow/pressure.

That has been demonstrated.

No one doubts that pressure would increase if you reduce bypass.

Everyone should measure actual pressure anyways..
