Well I got the car running and got an AEM 100psi sensor hooked up to link. Didn't change anything just logged off the head and then swapped the same sensor to the OFH that ive been running. My FFOFH is hogged out as you can tell by the pic. Im running 10-30 Brad Penn oil and a factory mitsu filter. Car has no B/S and does have the oil squirters.

Let the car warm up and with the sensor in the head I got the same results as I did with a mechanical gauge. It was 4-5psi at hot idle. It would raise with rpm and not go anything over 34-36psi. One strange thing I noticed is that the reading was very unstable.

So then I changed out the sensor and installed it to where the gauge port is on the OFH. Let the car warm up to 203 degrees again and hot idle it never dropped below 14 psi. Slowly revved the engine up to about 4000 stopping at each 1000 mark. By the time I got to 4000 oil pressure was already up to 75-80 psi. Got on the two step set to 6500rpm and the pressure had a small spike and settled in the mid 80s. Not enough to lose a bottom end.

After the readings, im not even sure its going to be worth anyone's time to compare vs a welded FFOFH because of how high my reading are. If you go by the 10/1000rpm rule of thumb, I'm way over that. As my gut told me, in a way I think that the relief hole should be bigger. Im getting way to much oil pressure at such a low rpm.

Heres two pics I took. The first is my housing with the gasket. That little relief sure has pressure just as I stated that it would. Low volume high pressure. Look how it blew a hole in the gasket. Second pic is a brand new FFOFH next to mine so you can see how hogged out mine is.

Ill leave this for a bit and let you guys discuss this data while I decide if its worth buying more gaskets and paying the $20-30 to weld the hole shut.

Thanks also for your time doing this. I will at some point for the thread get some actual numbers on mine it will definitely be interested to see some numbers of the modded housing.:hmm: I will video tape it also.
 
:thumb: Thanks for taking the time to do this. I would agree that you are in no short supply of oil pressure in the upper RPM band and clearly your relief valve is doing it's job. Your bottom end is certainly not in danger with those numbers. What kind of RPM do you rev to when at the track? Do you know what the oil pressure is at when your at your max rev-limit? Also, if I may ask, why do you feel your oil pressure is too high at low RPM?

Right now I rev to no more than 7100rpms. This engine with the FFOFH has been 8900 on my 40r setup. So its seen some abuse. This will be the 5th year on this engine. Beginning of last year I pulled a main and they still looked good. I did replace the rod bearings to a misshift gone bad.

My oil pressure on my gauge pegs mid 80s going down the track and doesn't drop below that. Based on what my AEM sensor reads, its about the same. The difference between the guage and the sensor is like 1 psi off at idle.

Stock oil pressure at idle is 11 psi. Im a few psi to much. If I barely touch the gas the pressure jumps up to 20-25.
 
Now this is a 6-bolt. I Would assume a 7-bolt is going to have different readings. Ive never tested 7-bolt 2g stuff, but my guess is 7-bolts with oil squirters will have a chance of lower oil pressures. If that's the case its as easy as not porting the OFH.
 
With nothing to support your claim. Which is the whole reason this conversation continues.

Now, I have this rock that keeps away tigers. Since, I've had this rock and distributed equivalent rocks to friends at no charge, none of us have been mauled by tigers.

I stand by my equally baseless and silly claim.

Oh, I get the mildly race related connection now. unfortunately the reference made by LandSpeed was to a rock that keeps away tigers, hence no reference to Tiger Woods was made whatsoever.

Then for some unknown reason it became a racist statement, to the puzzlement of many!
 
Sorry about the rods! Only if you had caught this important information in time! The appearance of what seems normal with the ffofh will manifest itself sooner or later in the bottom end like i been saying all alone. Y'all better give heed to the warning in post #1 caveman style will save you a headache!

No read my post. I was directing attention to bearing condition. After the failure. On a non modded ffofh on several b beat on engines

I already said the rods failed from to much timing with nitrous .the.bearing is mint even with those extreme pressures. Even on a UN modded ffofh is my point

The rods weren't bent because of a lack of oil, they were bent from too high of cylinder pressure, likely from detonation.

Again it has nothing to do with the housing. I consulted one of the biggest tuners and dsm guys in the game last night. He chose not to come into this conversation. He real world experience says the same thing ive been sayin this whole time. The FFOFH does not ruin engines in an un modded fashion. apparently you you don't know how engine oiling even works. Do me a favor and look up the Chevy 216 oiling system. You might understand how much oil pressure we don't need for an engine to survive.

Though through limiting torque this time around (directly related to cylinder pressure) I hope to buy some time while I piece together another rotating assembly.

I was logging around 72 lbs a min and it lasted quite awhile. I played with nitrous and got ahead of myself and forgot to back the timing down. Well about ten nitrous pulls later boom disaster

Maybe 3 days out of boost ;) i was making a point it's not gonna be lasting 30+ back to back pulls like a built motor, but if tuning is right the power can be had just to say it's been done. Landspeed is right, itll fatigue. Just like bending a paperclip too many times.

Just stumbled into this thread & I have a FFOFH. There is too much clutter on it. Can someone (who knows what's going on) post a "how to" or other info article? Can I get the executive summary so I don't have to read the whole thing? Thanks all.

ARFWD tested his ffofh without plugging the "hole" and showed results (with proper gauges/readings) that he had more then enough oil pressure. His setup included no balance shafts and a ported relief valve on the ofh.

Your best bet is to invest in a proper oil pressure gauge, put the housing on unmodified, and see what your oil pressure looks like. :thumb:

Do not, I repeat do not, rely on the stock oil pressure gauge. It has already been shown that the ffofh places the pressure sensor after the oil filter, whereas your stock ofh is taking the pressure readings pre-filter. This is going to result in less pressure shown by the "stock gauge" with the ffofh vs. the stock ofh as it has been proven there is pressure loss from the oil filter.

Simplified and on topic -

Hypothesis: "The unmodded FFOFH has a fixed pressure relief orifice in addition to the spring-piston relief. This could potentially create an excessively low pressure situation when used on a known-healthy DOHC engine with greater oil flow requirements than the original application(s)."

Notes: At this stage it is unsubstantiated.

Please measure your oil pressure with an actual gauge kit. Everyone's setup is going to be different as far as BSE, squirters, bearing clearances, pump wear.. you name it.

The lowest acceptable pressure of any operating condition as listed in the FSM for our engines is "11.5psi @ 750rpm Warm Idle" where warm idle is considered over 165*F.

If you find that you do not meet these specs, be it a minimum or maximum, diagnose the trouble first before modding your OFH.
