Round 2! Eeeeeeek!

Unfortunately the 2 owners that had this car after I sold it initially didn't seem to care for the car at all as they left the car sitting uncovered, in the elements, for 2 years... needless to say this car isn't quite as clean as it was when I sold it. Thats ok though, I am stripping this car down to bare metal to clean and repair all the rust concerns.

I got the car with a 6 bolt long block, a spare bare block and spare bare head, and a full uncut engine wiring harness.

Long drive today, about 760 miles, about 11 hours round trip. So worth it.

Oh, and I got the car back with all that stuff, for $200 (besides the trailer and gas )

So after getting a little deeper into the car, I found out a few more things that I didn't know/see at first.

My crackless dash isn't so crackless anymore

I guess the passenger seat wasn't needed by the other owners, as it was totally gone. I didn't notice this because there were 4 240sx s13 wheels in the car that he gave me.

The (complete) 6bolt wasn't as complete as he lead on. I knew it didn't have the manifolds. But, it doesn't have the intake camshaft or gear, (initially i thought just the cam gear was gone as it wasn't bolted to the engine) then i noticed no valve cover bolts, so I pulled it off and saw the crap missing. Also it wasn't mounted at all, so after a large bump on the highway at 90 MPH, it shifted and fell a bit haha.

Also, an exhaust manifold bolt appears to have been stripped at one point, and they tried to re-drill it, and suck balls at drilling. So I am not sure how easily repairable that will be.

I am glad however that my gauge cluster was still there. I hand made it to what I wan't to use for gauges.

When you think your car is in bad shape look up those guys who pull WW2 tanks out of mud and restore them

It might take a while, but in the end you will have a one of a kind car that you will enjoy. By then time you spent on it won't seem all that long.

I have started tear down of the car. I am pulling all the body parts, fenders, grill, doors etc, and am going to pressure wash the car top to bottom and get it ready for primer and under body coating along with interior sound deadening and such.

Last night I got the passenger fender off, which I had never done the first time around. Rust is very common to be hiding under there on these. I must be lucky because other than 41 year old sands, there was nothing!

I have also changed up my suspension plans. I will be using full front and rear 240sx S13 suspension. The rear will be modified to use pushrod coilovers. I am excited to get the swap started. After the body work and such, that is what is next. SO if anyone has a spare S13 laying around and wants to donate, let me know

I read this entire thread page 1 to now, awesome job and amazing you got your car back.

So as much as I love the 240sx suspension being a Nissan guy, the mk3 supra suspension is much better. If I were you I would stick with your original plan you had.

I am sure you know all of this but it is worth mentioning if it convinces you to reconsider, the 240sx has a great rear but it's front is pretty much garbage with the McPherson joke. On the other hand mk3 supra's have arguably the best suspension design in having a complete real double wishbone.

Which ever way you go I am sure the car will turn out superb. Good luck I will be watching this thread.

haha. I lived in Quebec for a short time, maybe it is time for another trip. The wife has never been. And I will definitely let you know about any parts. I'm sure the list will grow the further in depth I get.

Thanks buddy! And the main reason I am going with the McPherson front, is that is what the car is now. I have no problem doing a bunch of fab work, but the front S13 "almost" fits in place and is also floating rotors, the AE86 is practically the same as the Celica, just more aftermarket availability, and way more expensive than S13. Pretty much just re-drilling some holes for the S13. I do appreciate the input though. All input is welcome, it helps me think more in depth haha.


My goal is to get the car all torn apart by Saturday morning and then I'll pressure wash it and get it all cleaned up. I have an S13 front crossmember lined up, just trying to settle on a fair price.

I am also going to take the spare head that I have to the machine shop and see if it is salvageable being that it is corroded like nothing else. Looks like someone painted it white almost haha.

WELLLLLL. Some more progress.

I removed all the chrome around the car, I am not a huge fan of it anyways.

A little bit of rust needs some attention.

Some rusted out places in the lower rear fenders. Nothing too serious at least.

Dirty interior.

AND! As I was incapacitated on the john this morning, I got a text from pull-a-part that an S13 had shown up on the lot! So I jumped up, loaded up, and got there asap! (yes, I washed my hands). When I got there, there were already 2 other guys there pulling parts, one kid had to leave early since he got a massive chunk of flesh ripped from his wrist on the cut exhaust. Anyways. For $180 I scored this whole thing!

Wonder if you can (or should) take this car's body to a galvanizing place to have it hot dipped. Talked to a local (to me) place and they said that cost is about $0.30/lb of object being dipped (if whatever gets dipped weighs 100 lbs it will cost $30 to do it). Since tank temperature is close to 800 degrees there should not be any rubber or plastic on the part. Threads would most likely need to be re-tapped after the process. And rust does not matter, apparently the process gets rid of it somehow.

Reason why this is being mentioned is that after all rust spots are welded up it might be a good idea to have the body dipped to protect all those hard-to-reach places from future rust.

I got some rust prevention primer for the floors. I used a full can, just a spray can, and I will need one, maybe 2 more.

And it was 72• and sunny out, so I took a break to make us some awesome dinner!

If anyone is doing some interior sound deadening. This is some of the best stuff. It works so so well. It isn't quite as thick as Dynamat. But it is stupid cheap. 6" wide by 25' long. Less than $17 per roll. This is how much coverage I got with 1 roll. I will probably need 2-3 more.

Pity to see the Wheels disappear to those. I liked the mag ones. On to other things, my wife has a 77 Celica GT she's restoring. I love the Celicas. Great cars, even for being older than us. Keep up the good work!

I have been rather busy lately with work and home reno and such so it has been hard to do a lot on the car. I was able to get more interior work done and lay more sound deadening. Also, went to pull-a-part and got the front crossmember from the s13 that I need. I did find out thought that this crossmember is not a bolt in piece as I was lead to believe. Thats okay though. Nothing some cutoff wheels and a welder cant fix. I pulled out all of the front end stuff in preparation for the new setup

The S13 crossmember is about 2" too wide. Easy fix though. I should have the welder up and running this weekend after I get the 220v run into the garage.
