Finally Replaced the Valve Cover Gasket [Merged 7-9]

Ok im planning on painting my valve cover this summer. If i take it off should i got ahead and replace the gasket or will it be ok. Im also aware that i should probably scrape the remains of the gasket from the cover with a putty knife or something. TIA:dsm:

Yeah, go ahead and do it while the VC is off, might as well. It's only like 30 bucks or something and you don't want to have to do it later.

K im about to replace my valve cover gasket. first time doing it so is there anything i should look out for or be cautious of? thanks.

when you get all the bolts out that hold the cover on (there's a LOT, about 14 or so), use a rubber mallet or a block of wood and a normal hammer to lightly tap the cover off. A few whacks on the side of the cover should be enough to pop it loose. don't go whacking away because you will crack it.
When you install the new gasket, don't forget to do the spark plug well gaskets as well. Also, use RTV in just the corners and around the hump where the CAS sits. No need to go all the way around with RTV.

Other than that, it's pretty straightforward.

DON'T OVERTORQUE THE BOLTS!!! They will strip easily. The recommended torque setting is very low. Also, be very careful getting it off, hit it with a hammer like noslo2pto said. Don't pry on it with a screwdriver unless you absolutly have to, and if you do be very careful not to gauge the sealing surface.

Also don't overtorque the bolts because the valve cover will crack if the bolts don't strip.

RTV is "room temperature vulanizing". It's the generic term for all the products that have developed out of the original GE Silicone Seal. For the valve cover corners, I'd use the orange Hi-Temp from Permatex. Use just a little bit- wipe off the sealing areas with some carb cleaner on a rag, dab it onto the part straight out of the tube with as little air exposure as possible, then "dab" it with your finger to make it lift up into points. Do the same with that spot on the gasket, and get them together within 15 minutes.
Only use a screwdriver-type nutdriver on the cover bolts, or if you're using a socket, don't use the ratchet, just the extension. Come back after a couple days' running, and just barely tweak them down again, less than 1-flat, unless you find a loose one. Tighten from the middle to the outside.

i would go to autozone.and by the stock rubber valve cover gasket. you do not need. any jbweld orgasket maker.

haha jbweld? You dont want the valve cover stuck there forever. Go buy a gasket or use some rtv sealer. The orange kind works fine.

JB Weld is an epoxy(AKA glue). Its meant for repair of broken or cracked items. As stated by the others, RTV silicone, is a great sealer, & with a new gasket, I never needed any sealer.

haha sorry. I went to Lowes and I saw some JB-Weld and it said it was used in automobiles and crap, and it's the only thing I saw. Anyways, I went to NAPA and picked up some permatex orange high temp rtv sealer.. Thanks guys.
