Nice....however, I'd like to see his with a short shifter. Now THAT would be something I'd throw money at. Any idea of a ballpark price on this jewel? I know several people at DSMTalk have been aching for these, but for one reason or the other no one ever came up with anything. Let us know something, man!

Also,..possibly spacing the numbers a bit farther from the actual slots would help. One could fabricate a LED lighting system to switch the active gear number to a different color backlight. Now that I've looked at this a bit,...I've got all sorts of good ideas floating around in my little head. PM or AIM me because I've GOT to have one.

If somebody had a donor short shifter that they wouldn't mind giving away and letting get cut up then I could do it....until I catch up on some money because I just bought alot of parts so I'll have to wait until I can get one.... On the other way of looking at things, the shifter itself is shorter than the stock one i'm pretty sure about, I made it as short as I could without the knob or your hand hitting the gate or console.... The spacing it wouldn't bother anything I actually like how I have it so they don't look seperated from the gate itself, but yes I could make them farther away from the slots If I wanted.... I orginally was going to engrave Eclipse in the kind of empty space near the bottom, but i'm still undecided on that.... someone once said I should engrave DSM down in that area.... I still can not tell you though if or how many I will be able to make as of yet.... I would be able to come up with a price once I priced material and things like that to make alot of them....

If the shifter is already shortened,..then fantastic. After thinking about it a second, it MIGHT be possible to do that light mod with them closer. I was thinking about a series of microswitches that would be pressed by the shifter itself, either attached to the underside of the gate, or on the plate that attaches to the floor. The second might be better so that the numbers may stay closer to the gate. I'll work on something later tonight possibly. I might do something with a gear display elsewhere in the vehicle....ideas, ideas, ideas... I saw you had posted info about this gate awhile back over on DSMTalk. You could draft alot of interest there if you get a working prototype and take some good close-ups of it. Also,..I noticed a porsche I drove once (with a gate) had a "brush" type of shielding so that one couldn't see past the slots on the gate...Just an idea.

Ideas....Ideas....Ideas , thats how I feel all of the time:laugh: ....The whole light idea I'll leave that up to you, Haha.... The working prototype is already made, unless you mean with the whole light idea that you have.... right now I have a red light underneath the console and it looks like its glowing or a fire is underneath there it looks pretty cool.... yeah I still havn't found something I totally like to cover the slot up the brush thing looks to cheesy to me, I even sliced up my leather shift boot and that didn't work right because it was to thin, maybe like some velour or something I'm tempted to just paint everything in the bottom black so you couldn't really see anything down in there.... I will deffinitly get some better pics soon so you can get the "true" look:thumb:

I believe a company already produces one for 2Gs. I'd have to look, but I'm sure if you search a little, you'd probably find it before I would...

i am currently looking for a way to customize my shift base. what i was thinking was to remove the boot, and replace it with just a metal plate where the shift pattern would be. when i took the center pannel off, i realized the stock shifter did not move enough in between gears to actually have a pattern. so then i was thinking again... maybe just a circular hole instead of the shift pattern... anyways, i was just throwing this idea out there, and input would be great.

do a search for shift gate it's been discussed a lot in the past, it's not a bad idea, just hard to pull off correctly.

ok heres a rough sketch of my original idea

and this is my sketch of my second idea after i realized that it doesnt move as far as i thought in between shifts.

Ive been wanting to make a shift gate for my car and have done some research on what it would take. I would like to make a shift gate for the 2g car and then after i get it perfected, maybe start mass producing them (wishful thinking i know, but worth a shot). so i would like to have any ideas on how i should do this. I would just like to hear some feedback on this on what everyone thinks of the idea, even some encouragement...

Brush aluminum comes to mind.

And Chrome.

If you made a gate...you'd have to eliminate the shift boot, so you might as well market a whole Gate/Shift knob package and if the stock shifter looks Ghey with the gate and shift knob.....might wanna figure out a different shifter that looks good with the gate and knob.

ya i alredy looked at that stuff, but the project just seemed to kinda die. the way i would do it would be to sell the whole shifter in a kit, make it like a short shifter with the shift gate. at least thats what im lookin at right now.

in my opinion start with a b&m short shifter. If i recall correctly the previous attempts required the actual diameter of the shift lever to be decreased to allow enough room between gear positions to fit a shift gate in place. SO I'd take a b&m, get some heavy stainless stock in the diameter required, cut the b&m or oem shifter and weld new stock in place, get the end threaded to fit oem knobs, my additional $.02.

alrite well my whole plan was to use the stock shifter, which i cut down and welded a 3/8" stock steel rod into. there still is not enought travel between shifts to have the gates. i dont have the money right now to get a new shifter, but i do plan on getting one eventually. so when i get one maybe ill look and see what i can do with that.

Does anyone make a shift gate for our cars....that would look nice compared to the boot. I know one company make them for the 3000gt/stealth 5 speed crowd, any one make em for the 2g 5 speed eclipses?

Thx

I asked this same question in the past. I was told that it is not possible on our shifters b/c of the angle of the throw. I know this reply is not very in depth but I can't find the post. Hope this helps and if I'm wrong than someone please correct me. :thumb:

This has been done, but its not anything you can just buy a kit for and thats it.

If I remember correctly he had the piece made on a CNC machine ( he layed out the design himself based on a tracing of his shift pattern ) and had to trim the sides of the shifters shaft so it would fit arund in the gate.

Something I plan to work on one day. Hope that helps. Maybe do a search... I know there was a thread on it a while back.

Yea I searched but they like to dsmtalk which no longer exists. Well if anyone has some good ideas post em, otherwise lets let this tread die. Thanks

The in depth answer:

The stock 2 g shifter (and indeed every aftermarket shifter I've ever seen) have such a large diameter where the shift gate would be, that the throws overlap slightly. Meaning that the shift lever takes up some of the same room in 1&3, 3&5, 2&4 etc. This project had been completed successfully by several people over the years however it required making a new shift lever that was thin enough to not only stop overlapping in each throw, but also to allow enough room for the narrow gates.
