Ferrari shift gate setup for a dsm [Merged 10-6] gated shifter

Wouldnt the shifter lock "know when to let go" by the clutch? That would make sence. Your not going to shift without the clutch. So when you push the clutch in to shift it would open the lock and allow you to shift to the next gate. Let go of the clutch and it locks. Thats what I think it would do:)

I shift without my clutch all the time, when I'm coming to a stop I pull out of gear without the clutch.

How often has anyone here ever accidentally knocked the shifter out of gear when going for the radio or something? I can't imagine it's that much of a problem, seeing as how I can hardly force it out of gear without the clutch if I'm running over 2k rpm.

usually when the gas is on, it is really hard to pull it out of gear

Hey i was wondering if anyone has thought or knows of a kit that so instead of a shifter boot, you have a pattern like Ferrari's do. So there is an individual notch and you can see which gear yor in, rather than sliding around and accidentally sometimes going into 4th instead of 2nd. I think this idea would be pretty cool:thumb:

THanks

Howard

please no flames:shhh:

nope...its been done b4, or at least attempted, but when our cars shift, the pattern is too close to fit anything inbetween them.

You could try a search, but Ferraris used a direct-to-gearbox shifter when this sort of thing was going on, and the GATED SHIFTER (for next time you ask, or possibly SEARCHOMG ) was bolted directly onto the transmission instead of the coachwork. Also, gated shifters tend to use wee-skinny shifter levers: apparently one of the challenges to those trying to build a gate for DSMs has been that the gearchange lever is fatter than the distance between gears. i.e., when in gear, the space at the lever between 3rd and 5th is less than 3/4". Then there's the rattle problem- gated shifters are wonderful for creating a really irksome bzzzzzz as they use the gate for a sound board to amplify all the noise from the chassis, transmission and body. Oh, and it could come out like the Pantera, where shifting into second (European pattern) likely as not got you fourth.
So, to build your own, start with a ¼" rod for a lever, have it fully cage the shifter workings so that it'll stay indexed, use Teflon or polyethelene under the gate (1/16" aluminum plate, engine-turned) to snub the noise, and send pics when you're done. We'll wait here.
Or, slow down and let the transmission go into gear on its own, Parnelli.

I've had this done for some time now (beginning of summer) a guy built one before me and I thought that I would improve upon it so I got to work at school, it is the 1st one so far that I have produced, I would like to make some minor detail changes though, the numbers are engraved all the way through because I put a light underneath the console and it lights up the numbers and the gate itself, I always thought the shifting on a 1G was sloppy and IMO it improves shifting since you know where its going (also sounds cool :p ) like I said its my first one I made, school starts in 7 days so i'm trying to hurry and think of something else to make so I can start it when I have shop, tell me what you think:thumb: ....

Please try to make the best of it you can, the pictures arn't the greatest:mad:.... getting new camera soon, sorry about the quality.

thats sweet i should make oen so i can learn stick a bit better LOL.. i am about tired of automatics

Looks great but i agree with ^^^. You need to make angular cuts in it instead of the standard "H" pattern. It would allow quicker shifts. With minor changes/improvements i would buy one.

This is obviously cheap and done in about 45 seconds, but i think if something in this design could be done, it'd be awesome, still get external shift gate, but easuer then the "H"pattern

5 days straight school hours is alot longer than 45sec  .... aircraft aluminum for the shift gate (CNC milled, Bridgeport EZ-Track for engraving)- inside gate has rounded "fingers" and cornersas well, chamfered for extra detail.... and stainless steel for the shifter (CNC Lathe)all 1 piece threads and all, welded in .... topped of with a Greddy Counter Weight shift knob to make shifting more of a breeze....there goes the cheap part  .... I will not lie to you when I say that shifting speed is still the same as without it, you don't have go up and the push over and then up again as you would think or as it looks.... slam it up and push over at the same time and it slips into the next gear like a glove the middle slot going horizontal gives it the perfect room and the vertical tracks are close together where it works extremely well... I did as fast shifting as I could on both and I couldn't tell any difference besides that I knew and could feel and know where it was going better.... try taking your shifter out in your car and pushing it straight diagonally, our cars weren't made to go diagnal like that....unless I'm missing something:confused: ....and if you made the diagonal slots like that when you put it down in the gear and its holding it over it would slide up the diagonal side....

:D I love it.....I say make me a kit and I will buy it from you I know what u mean about gated shifters...I have driven cars with them before and they work great Let me know if u have a few for sale other will be intrested

If thats what he meant I apologize for being so harsh:( .... as for making more I'm looking to see if I can still but might not know for awhile possibly, I would really like to make alot more though as a kit (New shifter and Gate Pieces and possibly with the knob) although I want to make some more stuff.... maybe a new guage cluster for aftermarket guages (tach in the middle boost, temps, pressures in 60mm guages on the sides of the tach, id have to do some research on a layout I could make or at least make something like this) I'm planning on some other things also :shhh: ......

wow can i not type or what. that was horrible. hahahaha. whatever

Nice....however, I'd like to see his with a short shifter. Now THAT would be something I'd throw money at. Any idea of a ballpark price on this jewel? I know several people at DSMTalk have been aching for these, but for one reason or the other no one ever came up with anything. Let us know something, man!

Later,
