I changed my leaky oil pan gasket not long ago and it is still leaking. I used red rtv as the gasket and ran a nice continuous bead around the whole pan making a circle around each bolt hole. I think the two mistakes I made were not waiting for the RTV to dry before putting the pan back on, and I think I tightened the bolts too much ( I ended up breaking one of them).
I'm gonna buy a torque wrench and make sure they are right this time... how much torque do the pan bolts require? How long should I let the RTV dry this time before putting the pan back on?

torquing is always a good idea it just consumes more time thats why people dont do it most of the time but have fun putting your transmission back together hehe,,, i find it hard to got on some of those bolts XD
 
Ok can't post a pic cause data I have is copywritten. Final torque specs is 15-19 ft.lb. The first part of these steps is to progressivly tighten all caps before final torque spec. Starting on the intake cam the third cap to the left on the cam sprocket side will be the first one to tighten.Then tighten the next cap to the left of the first one you tightened, then #3 cap is to the right of the first cap you tightened, then tighten #4 cap which is to the left of #2, then tighten #5 which is the first cap behind the intake cam sprocket, then tighten the last cap on the back of the intake cam. Confusing I know but repeat this for the exhaust cam. Final torque sequence is the exact opposite so you will need to start on the furthest cap from the cam sprocket and work your way to the center of the cam. I hope this helps. Get a haynes manual It is really had to explain you have to alternate sides and front back. I will try to make a diagram.

Do 1-'s frist and 2's second. Also sung them all first in the same order before you torque.
 
First pic at top left is "torque" sequence. Second is the tightening sequence I "tried" to mention earlier. You'll notice the second pic at the bottom has the cam sprocket side of the head reversed...Don't know why. and here is the directions
1. Install rocker arms.
2. Apply engine oil to journals and lobes of camshafts, then install camshafts on cylinder head. Ensure camshafts are correctly installed. The intake camshaft has a slit on the rear end for driving the crankshaft angle sensor. Also ensure dowel pins on sprocket ends are positioned on the top.
3. Install camshaft bearing caps. Bearing caps 2-5 are the same shape. Check identification marks on bearing caps to determine correct location, Fig. 36. On 1990 models, ``L'' indicates intake camshaft side; ``R'' indicates exhaust camshaft side and on 1991 models ``I'' indicates intake camshaft side; ``E'' indicates exhaust camshaft side. No. 1 bearing caps are marked only ``L'' or ``R'' on 1990 models and ``I'' or ``E'' on 1991 models. Ensure rocker arms are correctly mounted on lash adjusters and valve stem ends.
4. Tighten camshaft bearing caps in sequence shown in Fig. 37, in two or three stages by torquing progressively. Tighten to specifications in the final sequence. See Fig. 35 above .
5. Install guide tool No. MD998307-01 or equivalent, on camshaft, then apply oil to camshaft oil seal and insert the oil seal along the guide tool until it contacts cylinder head. Using installer tool No. MD998306-01, press oil seal into cylinder head, then remove the tools.
6. Install camshaft sprockets, torquing attaching bolts to specifications.

i need to know how much i should torque the 14 mm bolts on an awd manual transmission. these are the bolts that hold the cover to the rest of the case when you try to take the trans apart. there are 2 long ones and alot of short ones.........thanks in advance for any help my haynes repair guide does not have this info.....

The spec is 26-30 ft/lbs.
 
This is kinda random. But i was wondering if anyone knew where i can get some bellhousing bolts besides from the manufactuter.
 
Yea i got most of my torque specs out of the Chiltons manual and yes thats a great manual to have out in the garage. ( i call mine my "bible" LOL) But If you get ARP bolts for all the mains and the head and stuff like that, those will usual come with a piece of paper telling you what ARP recommends for the torque specs. Have you tried maybe looking them up on line? Im sure someone out there has to have these posted up somewhere.
 
The ARP studs will come with the torque specs. Like mentioned, look in a service manual. But here is something for ya that most people never pay attention to:

The numbers on top of each and every bolt on these cars. Ever notice how different bolts have different numbers on the heads? This is why...Hope this helps.

*All torqure specs are in ft. lbs.
