You do put more stress on your exhaust manifold not having a flex pipe. Its a proven fact. You might not have problems with it somehow, but most people probably would.

more stress you put on your exhaust manifold the easier and quicker it will crack.

Yes if your motor mounts are toast your engine could be moving so much it would be a problem, but better safe than sorry

properly hung and good mounts it shouldnt move

no it doesn't and um....no it doesn't. if your exhaust is moving that much you got motor mount issues. poly mounts and no flex section for 3 years track raced it, autoxed it, never thumped or broke anything and i don't even have a brace on the downpipe. my 3.5" doens't have a flex either

I cracked an exhaust housing on a turbo doing that on one of my vw's. It was poly mounted but the motor still moves enough to crack and break stuff.

could be the design of the mounts of that particular car who knows, none of us run flex's cuz finding 3.5" and 4" flexes out here is rough on the cars around here. been that way for years haven't cracked anything yet my motor hardly moves under load in the engine bay even with 2 mount incerts, no probs with all 4

Hi i just wanted to know if anybody here runs an electric cut-out right under the o2 housing or farther down the exhaust, and if they had pics to show. i want to get one so that when i go to the track i can open it but still maintain a stock look with my stock muffler. and if you could also tell us if you could feel the difference with it open.
thanks

This has been discussed all last week as recently in a thread called"quietest looking stock mffler". It's about 12 threads beneath this one on the bolt on forum!
PS: Please fill out your vehicle mods EVEN if it is all stock. We all started out stock so no biggie. It just makes giving advice/opinions much easier. Mark

this one.

and i was thinking about doing the electric cutout, till i read its illegal. and 91-gsx seeing youre in san jo that means you too. if you go to a smog station and they see the cutout, insta-fail. same happens if youre caught running one, though if youre caught running one, it prolly means you have more problems than a exhaust cutout.

i wanted to have dual exhaust out the back, but have the cutout after the 3" DP. then one side has a 2" exhaust with cat, resonator and muffler(N1). the other side with a straight 3" and N1 muffler also. but the guy at my shop said "i dont touch those, theyre a big :nono:". so i could have cool looking duals, and switch from quite but deep exhaust for daily, to loud roaring exhaust when im at the track and can use the extra power advantage of no cat.

now i just have a test pipe made for when i go to the track, just unbolt the cat, stick the testpipe in, bolt it up, and bang, catless exhaust.

I LIKE THE DUAL EXHAUST IDEA!!! i considered that myself. May stilldo it. Would have to mod the lower vaance on the drivers side(1G), would need a pro body shop for that.
Some of you guys sure hve it tough when it comes to emissions and inspections. There must be guys in such states tha have found ways to make power and get through the state guys.
Did you go any further that going to a muffler shop with your idea? Looks would be killer IMHO and probably help performance and quiet the system even more. You have awakened my interest! Time to look into that idea more, THANKS! Mark

well i do not care much about smog becuase i have a straight pipe, to the stock muffler, 2 1/2" piping. what i want is something to weld onto the downpipe or something close to this, at the bottom of my writing. see the thing is i have the stock exhaust at home for smog and a straight thru exhaust for after the smog check :thumb: . but now i want a cut-out on my straight thru exhaust becuase it is small and i would not have to upgrade it anymore if it looked like the bottom picture. so if any of you have something like this i would like to know becuase there has to be someone.
thanks

i want an electic one that actually exits the exhaust in a higher flow way, the exhaust will not go out with that type of opening, it is a 90 degree bend.

with the t25 on the cutout it would be ok.
but you guys with the upgraded turbo, make sure you can run a good amount of boost before planning on using the cutout because you will get boost creep.

yeah man...I understand you...I haven't bought anything because the ones that are being sold are made like...backwards....they give more importance to the muffler flow than to the cutout flow...when I have some time/money to spend I'll make one like this:

Search for cutout... I have one on my car and in one thread I posted a ton of pictures off an on the car...

I noticed a significant loss after running a full 3" N1 exhaust compaired to an open DP. Running 13.2 @ 110 with a 2.1 60ft open DP and 13.2 @ 103 with a 1.8 60ft full N1.
I'd like to get a cut out, wing nuts or electronic cut out, curious if anyone uses one and what you'd do differently, recomendations?
Thanks guys.

mr. gasket makes an exhaust cut out. I think it is 2.25 or 2.5 in. If i remember correctly, the price was about $50. it was a cable driven cut out though. I know locally to me, Lane Automotive sells them.

I am getting ready to get this thing installed (its been sitting in my garage for 4 months) and was wondering where the best place to put it would be. I am running a buschur racing dp and a SCM 61 Turbo. I was thinking about putting on the DP before the cat (or where the cat use to be)...any thoughts. thanks

I think the best place would be in the test pipe. this way you dont have to worry about hacking that expesive downpipe.
