Exhaust Cut-out [Merged 8-9] cut out bypass

Uhh its pretty simple.. Its "legal" when you have it closed and are running through the stock exh... but when its open its illegal due to noise, pollution etc.

You can't say "I just use it at the track?". ;) Where at the track, anything is legal, testpipes, no exhaust...
 
I have a manual cut out. I like it. Going to upgrade to an electric for the ultimate sleeper effect.

With apologies for repeatedly derailing the thread, it's illegal to have one installed on a street car whether open or closed.

Of course, being Americans, we equate "illegal" with "got caught".
 
i had one on my 92 chrysler lebaron and it ws loud as hell when open and not much quiter when closed but i used a cable one that you could control in the cockpit. i just capped it with some cheap sheat metal and passed emmisssions the guy didnt inspect at all usalley they will not inspect unless they have reason to like the sound of a faulty exhaust flange gasket my friend used to work at a emmssion testing place but it was in illinois in callifornia they might sodomize you for trying to pull a fast one. good luck
 
for those saying that they are illegal, since when is a 3" turbo bat exhaust legal? Wont that cause "noise pollution"???? IMO, I would of put one in my car, but my damm stock exhaust had about 5 leak/rust spots.

Not if there's a muffler on it. And, the muffler has to be "adequate".

As for the specifics in Jersey:

" 31. Mufflers and exhaust systems. Prevention of noise. Every motor
vehicle, operated or driven upon the highways of the state, shall at all
times be equipped with an adequate muffler and exhaust system in
constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or
unusual noise and no such muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped
with a cut-out, bypass, or similar device."

McCord Power Plate sells electric cutout actuators for $110...if I were to get a Y fitting welded onto my stock downpipe and fit it with the actuator and then to my stock exhaust, would my performance suffer from the 1/4 in. difference in the stock DP and an aftermarket 2.5 in. one?

Opinions/insights please? :)

(*I have heard the stock DP is 2.25 in., while many people's aftermarket DPs are 2.5 in...if I am running straight out of the stock DP when in "performance" mode with the electric cutout, will I lose a lot of power just because of that 1/4 in. difference in width? Or is the restrictiveness of the stock exhaust found more in the bends and in the cat than in the stock DP?)
 
get a manual cut out that is 2.25 inches in diameter and then add on the electric part later.
 
many people buy a 3" DP and get a cutout welded into that, however im making my own cutout and welding it onto my exhaust exhaust, probably right after the bend or where my cat used to be...my 4" cutout :)

in theory it wont be too hard to make....
 
Oh yea, and even so the manual cutouts that can be welded are only like $30--the ones where you close off the opening with wingnuts and take it off when you go to the track. I was looking for something a little more street friendly to show pesky ricers I mean business ;), a la electronic boost controller style!

I wonder if there are any ways to fabricate an electronic one that opens and closes easily...hmm...

Still, does anyone have feedback on whether a 2.25 stock downpipe with a cutout for performance would be significantly worse than a 2.5 in. dp?
 
But 1badtsi, are you running stock DP and exhaust other than the cutout? And if so, where did you find the 2.25 in. cutout with electric motor?
 
yes im running stock dp for now, i had a whole n1 turbo back before, but due to living in cali, i had to go ultimate sleeper exhaust, i plan to get a rnr dp soon 2.5in.. anyways, my cut out is 2.5in and i got the whole kit from www.quicktimeperformance.com for 184 bucks, not a bad deal since i feel way more top end with the cut out than i ever did on the 3 in turbo back. anyways, heres some stuff for ya http://208.254.222.235/QTEC/WRXVideo.wmv

30 dollar butterfly valve on ebay, 15 dollar electric solenoid, thinking cap. :thumb:
