ladson,
South Carolina
mod 2 and 2.5 and the nightmare that ensued.
well after brakes and rims i decided to go with the exhaust as my next area of modification ( be advised cash flow did play a small role in my choices ).
after looking around and checking out the forum ( yes i did actually search the forum for info.). i settle on the MEGAN RACING 3" 02 housing back full exhaust system. the people at MR were helpful, efficient, and fast (my parts arrived from Cali in only 2 days). with everything going so well up to this point i was waiting for the other shoe to drop and it did. after getting all the parts laid out and drooling on them for awhile i got the car in the air and pulled the old system, it took less than 15min.
wait for it.....here it comes, the other shoe...
WTF the downpipe does not lineup
. i take a break and come back and no the wishful thinking had not changed the pipe so that it would fit. at that point i remembered some of the DSM guys stated that they used hammers and grinders to make theirs fit. i also remembered a thread stating this problem had been fixed by MR. off to the phone i go, the MR rep asked me to check the part# on the box
he verifies that i do in fact have the "fixed" version of the downpipe. i thought
i'm not going to get anywhere with this approach. then i thought to myself
EVO III o2 housing thats what i need !!!
back to the phone i go this time i call Joe at SlowBoy and he gives me a great deal on a ceramic coated hafe exhaust manifold and the EVO III o2h. parts from SBR arrive in 2 days.
at this point the nightmare intensifies, after removing the driver side fan and the heat shielding things are going great until a try to get the wrench on the bottom o2 housing nut hrs later i finally get it off.
(note: guys if you don't have a set of "S" wrenches get a set and this becomes a whole lot easier
i didn't think of that until i finished the install.)
after the evo housing is in i grab the downpipe bolt pattern fitment
flange angle

after i calm down i see that the flex pipe is hitting the transfer case and thats why the flange wont sit flush.
so what to do now
...
a tig welder.
i drive my other car to a local shop and get a quote and setup an appointment.
back at the house i chop the old exhaust back to the cat, grind the holes so it will fit the evo o2h, grab some clothes hangers to hold the cat in place, and i'm at the shop before my guy finishes unlocking and setting up for the days work. to save on the shop cost i opted to only have him cut, fit, weld and install the downpipe thinking "i'll get the rest done in no time". an hour and a half later he's done "ok you're good to go. be careful on the way home it'll be a little loud."
man was that an understatement i thought my teeth would rattle out and i seemed to have problems concentrating on the road my head was vibrating so much.
all in all though the rest of the install went well. runs great sounds great and i'm glad to have done it.
