-i posted this same thread on ecmlink forums but i'm pretty sure dsmtuners has quite a few more active members that may be able to help-

hello, been reading and searching as much as i can. i just bought v3 1g ecmlink and i'm having a real hard time connecting. i think i've finally got the driver installed correctly on the lap top. when under device manager i see the com port thing pop up when plugging the cable in and see it disappear upon disconnecting. Few things id like to ask first is, i failed to install the driver correctly on my lap top the first time around so i thought for ****s and giggles i'd plug the cable into the desktop computer. it apparently found the drivers itself and installed them, however there were two drivers it found? idk if that's normal. the lap top only installed one. so first question should there be two different drivers or only one? i made the computer install everything in the drivers folder.

second question, When exactly should the led on the cable come on, blink or flicker, upon plugging it into the laptop or the car (with key on) or only when connecting to the ecu. i'm not getting any kind of light up during any of these.

i used to data log my car all the time (via pocket logger) so i'm assuming the obd port is in good condition however the car did sit for quite some time and is not running right now, wont be for another week or so.

i'm going to test the port to make sure. but i should have continuity; pin 12 with ground, pin 1 & 2 on the ecu with pin 1 and 10 on the port. i've seen its possible to have a bad cable but very rare and i honestly don't think its the cable but could be i guess.

Just asking for any input i know there's a million threads on " ant connect " or whatever i just didn't see exactly what i was looking for.

Btw i'm in vero beach florida if anybody is close by that could maybe help out PLEASE message me!

thank you in advance - Brian

EDIT: yes there is continuity in all the pins to there corresponding locations

im not getting any voltage to my ecu, is there a plug or something that i could be missing? electrical really doesnt agree with me i cant seem to get it right.

using this as a reference

http://www.dsmlink.com/images/forums/1GECUPinout.pdf

im not getting voltage on 103 which is a red and black wire and should be battery back up constant 12v , nothing for me.

not getting voltage from 102 & 107 which is from relay pins 4 and 5 both red wires

i dont get it :sosad: , would buying a whole new harness and swapping it solve the problem? car sat for about 2 years.

Have you gone over all the fuses?

The ecu gets it back up power from interior kick panel fuse box, lower right corner, red 10A(interior lights/room). The interior fuse box is fed from the exterior fuse box fuse number 6(40A)

The mpi relay gets it power from the mpi relay main fuse, on the battery terminal. its the only 20A fuse on the terminal box thing.

Ecu back up power is unimportant and will not hinder the starting/running of a 1g, perhaps you want to make that a secondary issue for now.

After you check out the fuses, If you find nothing blown take a look over the harness of what you can see. Look to see if its chaffed along the battery tray, pinched under a bolt/bracket,ect.

Then if you don't find anything there we check for power at the mpi plug. pin 10,lower one corner. its black with a red stripe. It should have battery voltage.

If it doesn't have, you have a open,/short somewhere, if you doi have power you should perform the mpi relay check out test.

If the relay tests good then check to see if the ecu is getting ignition voltage when the key is one, if it isn't then we'll chase that, if there is voltage then we will manually ground the mpi activation wires and see if we get power.

If you make it through everything , and jump activation wires with success, you need a ecu.

Perhaps you want to open up your ecu and see if you have black oozeing death before all this, and save yourself some time.

If you need the electrical manual for your car, go to scribd.com and search 90-91el ,and let me know what you eliminate, or find along the way.

ecu has had the caps replaced and socketed by jeff o, lives an hour away great guy. keydiver. and obviously im running ( trying to ) ecmlink. and cant get it to connect.

the reason i started checking ecu voltage is because i couldnt get dsmlink to connect to the ecu , found i was supposed to have cycling voltage on pin 1 (obd) and 5v or so on pin 10 (obd) not getting either, ground has continuity (i think) which brings my to my next question. im not a multimeter wiz but. continuity is ohms right when checking for continuity . im not sure quite what to do . i just put one on a ground put the other on whats supposed to be ground. if the number jumps up and settle on something ive been assuming it has continuity. is this wrong? which setting would be best? i know the picture is blurry

which settings should i be using? for voltage testing im using v dc and it says 20. whatever that means but when im checking the fuse box one of the fuses say 15+ volts?

moved my battery to the subframe, dont think there are any pinched or exposed wires although i will triple check.

im going to be honest the electrical system isnt my thing. and my car sat for abotu 2 years so im not completely back into the groove of things here i guess you could say. where is the mpi plug? could not having that plugged in cause an issue?

<a href="http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f224/mxdawg121/Mobile%20Uploads/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_7893.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f224/mxdawg121/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_7893.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

the red wires here is the power for my gauges i prefer them on ignition instead of light switch , they do come on when i turn the key. however turning the key doesnt power the starter , hooked it to a button and the starter works fine. not sure if it matters but running an external fuel pump with a switch for power.

checked the larger black wires for ground , yes they are grounded, the two next ones should be power from mpi , nothing, and the red/black wire nada tambien.

what im working with

Eye sex; nice looking intake/tb pic.

I think you have your multi meter wrong, it to blurry to be sure, but it looks as is the black leads should be in the middle. then the red leads goes in the left, or the right depending if you are testing voltage ,ohms,or amperage.

On ohms, you want 1-2 ohms and no more or else theres a issue. If it read ofl, then that means theres no connections.

If your getting no power to the ecu, then ecmlink can't work/communicate. the mpi plug is connected to the mpi relay ,obviously, and its located on the right stereo/console rail, inches from the ecu stock mount location. Circled it in your pic. And yes, having your mpi plug unplugged in will cause this, and I just noticed its not plugged in, as its the plug right to the left of my red circle as a matter of fact.

first off let me say . THANK YOU SOOOOO GOD DAMN MUCH
i do however feel like an idiot but i plugged it in viola ecmlink connected!! haha you dont understand how excited i am!! OH MY GOD ####ING THANK YOU SO MUCH

Haha. 55 mins and its solved. And I was about to go to sleep and my phone beeped with your PM. Sometimes things just workout like they should.

I'm not thrilled with your outcome.......................................... but it's nice to see it's re-solved.

not thrilled: because it didn't help me in my issue :D

3 months :|.... 1 hour:D.... hmmm where is the jealously spawning from? LOL post up a perfect pic of your issue and ill point it out!.

I'd laugh if it was as simple as this, though I bet you touched your car all over to put the harness in and woulda noticed something like this.
