Deep sounding exhaust? Experiences on stock 2gs?

I'm thinking about upgrading my factory exhaust but don't want to waste what little money I have. :D Now what I'm wondering is what helps create a deep sounding exhaust rather than the loud annoying crap I hear on some cars that sound like huge trucks. ROFL

I have an automatic 97 gsx and its my daily ride so I'm only going so far with its performance but upgrading the exhaust I'm interested in. Just wanted to know what else contributes to a great sounding car. Also, I was looking at the parts catalog.. would investing in a catback exhaust alone give the car a deep sound? Besides the intake and filter, my car is pretty much stock, so if anyone has different experiences with exhausts, please let me know about the sound. But of course, I'm only interested in how they sound on stock 2g, otherwise anything else wouldnt help. Searching and finding broken sound clip links doesnt help. And searching and finding working clips of1gs and suped up 2gs doesnt help either! :( But thats where I am so thanks for any help!

And just adding, I'm already satisfied with its performance so hopefully trying to obtain a deeper sound for my car isnt ricey but an aftermarket exhaust would improve performance some anyway as well.

Thermal 3''. For sure. I had the 2.5'' on my GS, and it sounded amazing. I was convinced to get it on my GSX when I got it too, and of course, it sounds amazing again. Here is a sound clip I found of the stock exhaust, then the Thermal 3'' on a GSX.

Damn you have a good camera that records the sounds pretty good. You made the stock exhaust sound pretty good, and the thermal exhaust just sounds perfect the way I want it. I was thinking just getting an eBay exhaust, but all the hype about thermal seems to be right. I'm saving up for a thermal.

Also, you revved pretty high with the stock exhaust, I was hoping you'd rev high with the thermal.

So I was looking underneath my car today, and just as I thought, the salt has really kicked some ass underneath. I took a couple shots of my exhaust tips and was wondering, what are these inside the tips? Are they silencers because I've never seen silencers that look like that. Why would there be silencers on a stock gsx anyway.. o.o little confused but thats why here anyway.. :)

I was planning on getting the Thermal but now I read it wouldn't connect to the stock cat?? Is this true...? Please tell me I read something wrong :D.. do most aftermarket catbacks not connect to the stock cat? Can someone please explain the logic in creating a part for a specific car yet not creating it to actually fit or not at least selling some kind of adapter with it?

...look out, frustrated newb here.. :beatentodeath:

Those are the outlets of the muffler thats all. The tips are around them just for show so you dont have crappy rusted pipes showing out the back of your car.

The Thermal 3" can fit with the stock cat becuase it necks down to 2.5" right before the cat so it is a direct bolt up.

Hey, I bought the Tsudo N1 downpipe & catback almost two years ago and I've had no issues with rust. I live in Tennessee and we see minimal salting on the roads, but I haven't seen any rust from the times that we did get salt. Just saying the Tsudo gives a good deep exhaust note for a good price. The Thermal exhaust is a good choice as well. Just giving you another option since I haven't seen it mentioned yet.

Thermal is a great exhaust, but it goes under the rear axle and sits very low if you are already lowered. 5" tip I think.

I got a 3" RnR exhaust, nice deep tone, doesn't sound ricey. It can be loud if your not careful, but you don't have to wake up the neighbors when you leave.:dsm:

Thats pretty important, especially since my brother's Acura has a senstitive alarm system.. dont want to set it off everytime I'm going out! :D

I took the time to email two of the Ebay exhaust sellers. I tried to make it as detailed as possible and also explaining in kind words how a stainless steel coated catback would really be a waste of time and money for anyone that drives on salted roads. I also described how their return policies wouldn't really even apply since rust is a long term effect.. (supposed to be anyway :D)

Zomk Speed said their catback (95-99 ECLIPSE GSX 4WD TURBO CATBACK CAT BACK EXHAUST) is stainless steel coated. Of course, it doesn't say that on the item description but has stainless steel all over the goddamn descrip.

Japan Imort Shop said their catback (N1 CATBACK EXHAUST 95-99 MITS ECLIPSE GSX 3.0 INCH AWD) is 100% stainless steel. I like how they had this blurb on their item description:

"The muffler and piping is stainless steel many orther brand name use powered coated piping or mid steel painted black and tell you it's stainless steel acually only the muffler is stainless. The piping and muffler we are selling is full stainless steel. WE GIVE THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE."

I didn't bother email Xtune but just by looking at this line:
100% stainless steel SUS-304 Muffler with polish finish.

You can see that only the muffler is ss, however, then they have to go and say "with polish finish." Zomk Speed also has "polish finish" in their description. That seems like a big Stainless Steel coated sign to me. Also, just by looking at the picture, you can see the muffler is a different material when compared the rest.

Just thought I'd mention this to help out those that want a new exhaust and looking to save money by buying from ebay.

I will give the japanimport N1 knock off one thing...it is tough to cut through with a sawzall. Mine broke 3 brand new blades. And where it was cut there wasn't any layers I could see at the ends.

Was it a direct bolt on? I dont know if I trust their "PERFECT FIT GURNATEED" LOL ..many ebay sellers items are gurnateed or, some are even guarunteed.

If you have stock downpipe, then yes it will be. It comes with a little reducer/extension that hooks up to the stock downpipe (goes from 2.25 or whatever the downpipe is to 3" for the exhaust). I tried bolting it up with a megan racing downpipe and spent 3 hours trying to get it to work, but it wont. You need those extra 4-7 inches that the reducer provides(of course its not going to work with aftermarket dp since both of your ends would need to be 3"). Without the extra inches, the exhaust is too far forward and will not bolt up. I took it to an exhaust shop and they welded in an extension, cost me about $42 i think. Should have just done that in the first place, but i tried to make it work LOL

Yeah I had mine hooked up to a megan dp as well. It didn't fit exactly right but that's ok since I had to cut/weld the neckdowns anyway and I like to weld the sections together instead of bolting the flanges because that way I have no leaks at all.

The N1 replica wasn't exactly bolt on. It didn't line up right over the rear axle so I had to have it slightly cut to make a turn, and also I used my own hangars since some of their's didn't line up right. These issues are exactly why I have a shop hang my exhausts because they never "bolt on" perfect.

AWD version of dp doesnt neck down, so normally wouldnt be a reason to need to weld it up. Also the hangers lined up perfectly once the extra exension was welded in, the exhaust shop used the origional hangers on it in their origional location.

Check the ebay thread on these exhausts. You'll find that most everyone had different fitment issues which goes to show they aren't uniform. Whether they bolt on without modification is a crap shoot. But they are all pretty close.

And the megan dp's come with very small flex sections which is a downside imo. They don't have much slack for when the engine torques.

Ive still been happy with mine, and it sounds great. $255 for the exhaust, ~$130 for the downpipe, and $42 to get the exhaust fit on correctly. Less than just the cost of some exhausts out there.

My GST breathes into an RRE 3" downpipe and 3" Espelir GT500 SS exhaust system. It kicks some serious a$$. Nice deep tone, well designed and built system. It was a little pricey compared to some of the other setups, but I would highly suggest :thumb:
