Deep sounding exhaust? Experiences on stock 2gs?

I'm thinking about upgrading my factory exhaust but don't want to waste what little money I have. :D Now what I'm wondering is what helps create a deep sounding exhaust rather than the loud annoying crap I hear on some cars that sound like huge trucks. ROFL

I have an automatic 97 gsx and its my daily ride so I'm only going so far with its performance but upgrading the exhaust I'm interested in. Just wanted to know what else contributes to a great sounding car. Also, I was looking at the parts catalog.. would investing in a catback exhaust alone give the car a deep sound? Besides the intake and filter, my car is pretty much stock, so if anyone has different experiences with exhausts, please let me know about the sound. But of course, I'm only interested in how they sound on stock 2g, otherwise anything else wouldnt help. Searching and finding broken sound clip links doesnt help. And searching and finding working clips of1gs and suped up 2gs doesnt help either! :( But thats where I am so thanks for any help!

And just adding, I'm already satisfied with its performance so hopefully trying to obtain a deeper sound for my car isnt ricey but an aftermarket exhaust would improve performance some anyway as well.

I think mine sounds pretty good. Megan racing 3" downpipe and 3" n1 knockoff ebay exhaust. On the highway doing ~70 with cruise control the exhaust is barely noticable, doesnt drone at all along with city crusing in 4th gear. City driving(going through the gears a lot) ts a little loud and gets louder when engine breaking. No rice sound at all either.

Hey I have for now a mostly stock 2g gst. I have a few mods only for the next week or so then it will be different, but here is a clip of my 3" ebay n1 style catback exhaust. Yeah my belts are loose and I guess I am smoking a little but new engine coming soon anyways.

Here it is:

yeah i got an EBAY 3in catback, Xtune exhaust. its really nice, 4.5 inch tip, very deep sounding.

if you search on Youtube, you'll find a clip of a guy with a 2g talon that put it on his car. although he basicall revs it from a stand still, and you dont get a super good idea of the spectrum, if you gives you a ball park of what it sounds like.

best part? 185 shipped, and bolts right up to cat if you wanna keep emissions.

oh and the title, DONT get anything aluminum, guaranteed to sound Rice-city. so depending on your HP goals, i'd go stainless 3 inch for deep sound, and either get a system off ebay, or (what im going to do here when my ebay one gets too old) is take my car to an exhaust shop, have them do a Custom 3in turboback, and have them weld on a borla muffler for me:thumb: --thats what i think will produce the lowest tone possiblel

let me know if this helps

oh and one last point, do NOT go buy an expensive name brand exhaust before you do alllll your homework. the people on this site alone who kick themselves daily for buying an overpriced exhaust are in the thousands

I actually read a lot about people spending a lot on brand name parts when there are some ebay parts just as good for less than half the price! The only reason I've been incredibly hesitant towards buying an ebay catback is because the exhaust is exposed to the outdoors. And I live in massachusetts so lots of bumpy, pothole-filled roads, snow and worse, salt. I saw some topics with people who bought ebay exhausts and the salt seems to really beat down the material, making it really rusty. Now thats just because they probably got aluminum correct?

So what are the ebay exhausts like after winters?

I'm liking the sound of that N1! I'll only be sad to see my dual tip gone though, I really like that look.

Another important question..

This N1 says its for 95-99 turbo eclipses and talons in the title

However, on the page it says:
For: 95-99 Eclipse Turbo GS-T
95-99 Eagle Talon Turbo TSi 2WD

Now isnt the GS-T and GSX pretty much the same except one is AWD and the other FWD?
So would this exhaust still fit my AWD GSX? Because the N1 that actually says GSX is from a different seller and has different information on the page, but most importantly, is more expensive haha.

This is the n1 for the gsx

2nd link is the one i bought. The main "ebay" exhaust thread i saw someone say theres had rusted in under a year, and i think i may have seen another say so, but most peoples seems to be doing great. Weh have decent winters here in missouri and for the price i figuried i would take a chance on it. ( hell if it rusts i could buy another and still be cheaper than most exhauts. ) I also think the guy is trying to do the rma process but they are needing the part number or something off the origional box. If you search a bit you can find the thread. I bought some mag wax stuff that is supposed to help protect also, so i think im going to put that on the muffuler and hopefully it will be ok.

Yeah that is me. Mine has rusted pretty good after just one winter. No shine in mine anymore. I am trying to get a refund or exchange or something, but they are making it near impossible. I don't have my original box anymore and they are telling me I need the part number off the box. I still have the item number from ebay and everything showing I purchased it from them but seems like they don't want to come through with there end of the guarantee to never rust. I love the exhaust other than that though. Sounds great and nothing close to it for the money. But having a real rusty tip is not the greatest thing. 364073[/ATTACH]"]

There are a couple of pictures of the condition on my exhaust. They are from a few weeks ago so ###### a little worse now.

thermal r&d sounds great. i have a full ATR TBE on my 1g and its by far my favorite exhaust. ATR went out of business but you may be able to find a used system.

Damn! Those people always make refunds and exchanges difficult as hell. Having worked the front end at a retail store for three years I learned to keep all my receipts and boxes.

They should take a new one, keep that box or use the part number on that box. Thats pretty much what we did in order to get credit for the returned item. I'm going to end up emailing them about returns before I purchase to see what BS they give me.

Maybe there's a way I could have it coated with.. something to help prevent against rust? Not sure how much that would cost, otherwise I might as well just get a brand name exhaust (which can still rust..). But I really liked the sound so I'm going to do a little research, maybe there is something to help prevent against rust.

Anyone have a sound clip of the thermal r&d? How are they after the winter?

Gst and gsx exhaust unfortunatly are not the same.

Thanks much. I was beginning to assume they weren't since none of the auctions had GSX and GS-T under one exhaust.

..and scratch the coating the exhaust idea. Just found out a major cause of rust is actually internal. So although coating it may or may not protect it from outside debris, moisture from condensation occurring within will eat away. :( Guess I shouldn't touch an ebay exhaust..? As much as I hate it, get what you pay for.. it seems some businesses ship fast and send the correct item, but put quantity before quality. So everyone gives the company a positive rating, then months later, the item's crappy quality shows and there is nothing you can do about it. :(

But anyway, what exhausts are known to truly be ss and will fight the winter for a few years at least? Guess I should take out the checkbook..

I'm still not convinced it isn't the fault of your driving environment. Your entire undercarriage looks beat down rusty. I have the same car, same year, and not a spot of rust anywhere under my car. I haven't seen anyone else have the same experience as you with that exhaust either. Whatever you drive through every day, it is harsh!

Definitely love the Thermal R&D one. One of the best I've heard. I've got an HKS 2.5" Carbon Ti on my GST, and it sounds pretty good. At idle it's not loud, it almost sounds stock. Under small load it sounds a bit deeper, but not overly aggressive. Under full load, it honestly sounds like a stock Evo exhaust, which is heaven to me.

Yup, my cousin came here from Wisconsin and his whole undercarriage is rusted over. It's all the salts and crap that are used on their roads.

I have the box sitting right here. It says Item NO 9161333

Thermal 3''. For sure. I had the 2.5'' on my GS, and it sounded amazing. I was convinced to get it on my GSX when I got it too, and of course, it sounds amazing again. Here is a sound clip I found of the stock exhaust, then the Thermal 3'' on a GSX.

That sounds great! Its always nice to have a before and after. Definately going to do that before and after I install a new one.

Our roads get a lot of salt too, I'm afraid what it will look like underneath!

DSMunknown, I actually listened to some of those on that thread but a *lot* of those links are broken and it got pretty annoying. Its a good thread but it should probably get remade every year! (or have the earlier pages deleted?) The entire first page are broken links and even the latest page has a lot of broken links. But I wanted to know what the exhausts sounded like on stock cars and I'd basically have to pray the people who still had working links had stock cars, or mostly stock. I'll definately check out that site though! Thanks.

I have the Greddy EVO2 cat back with high flow cat, 3'' down pipe & O2 housing. I Love the sound its a great deep tone thats not loud enough to get annoying on long trips. what ever you go with you should really invest in at least a high flow cat, that will make a good difference in the tone and keep the cat backs from getting buzzy.

Yes of course it is due to the driving conditions. I am in NY and there is lots of salt on the roads here in the winter but this is supposed to be guaranteed to be rust free. Also from the ebay exhaust thread other people on up north have said they have had the same rusting problems with this exhaust. So by there being salt by me it should still be rust free, thus this exhaust is not truly a stainless steel exhaust system. Maybe coated, or some other material but from any stainless steel items I have had before, rust does not occur.

And thanks cooldude919 I sent over the part number to the vendor so I'll keep everyone posted how my dealing with the warranty go through.
