Hey i gota cosmo air intake. The short ram. Just wondering if anyone thinks it would be beneficial to make a custom pipe to go father down towards the bottom of the car to gain mroe cold air. Put it in front of the radiator or fog light hole. Just curious if it would be worth my time to custom fab one?

Jeff

If you can find a local machine shop have them make the piping for you, not sure how much it would cost though. Don't forget, Home Depot is your friend!!

Well see i can weld and do all the custom fabbing my self. I was just gonna piece one together maybe something like this. Its paint i no but you get the idea.

Just was wondering if it would help. Either way the filter will be down my the bumper.
Is this worth my time and money or will i not notice much. This would be replacing my cosmo intake which is a short ram.

Jeff

The filter being mounted down in the bumper will be beneficial somewhat, it won't be taking in as much hot air from the engine bay. In the second image I don't see how a bulge would be beneficial, a straight pipe without the bulge would work fine.

I thought about doing the same thing, mounting the filter behind the passenger foglight hole. I was going to run the pipe down through the hole for the intercooler pipe but desided just to leave it like it is.

I wouldn't mount it that low, it could easily get water soaked. Either mount it just out of direct windflow above the hole, or make a shield of somekind around it to help protect it, water in your engine is not a good thing!

haha you could always make it in 2 pieces one for dry and one for wet. You simply add the dry extension to the wet and when its wet take it off. SImple enough. But zero how benifcial wil it be? I thnk you gain 4-6 hp from a good intake.(no way near the supposed 15 but hey i think thats the right estimate so i heard) But would the colder air boost it up to 6-8? If it did jsut for those few extra hp i would do it:)

I actually had something like that on my elantra. They make an inline purge system for water if you'd like. It was a coupler that was put on about a foot before the TB. It was a foam insert that allowed water to purge so it didn't get sucked into my TB. My CAI hung so low, I was worried that I would frive into a really deep puddle and just suck in water. I never had any problems until the plastic got old enough after 3 years that it broke. This is what I'm talking about: http://www.doctorimport.com/aem_air_bypass_valve.html

I highly recommend not taking the filter into the passenger fender behind the foglight. I Had this setup a while back and the car defenitely sounded mean at high RPM's and i think i did feel a bit of a performance increase. . .unfortunately i did get my MAFS wet and the car bogged and ran like poop. The next day i took a hair dryer to dry out the sensor and thank god the car ran like a champ after that. Gotta be careful not to get the carboard looking material in the sensor wet.

ya if i did that i would make sure to some how keep it dry. Is it possible to have the mass air flow higher up some how. Or does it have to be right by the filter? I could customize it to be where it normally is then i wouldn't have to worry about it getting wet.

Jeff

I wouldn't put the maf any lower than the base on the side where the resonator for the airbox goes. The pipe off the left side of the airbox (standing in front of car) goes down to where the intercooler would be on a turbo car. If you can find some way to keep the air filter just barely under that part and the sensor above that part, you will be much better off and still have the benefit of cooler air.

but how my hp or torque will this cooler air produce. Hondas this would add numbers to but this is different so i am jsut curious. 4hp maybe? if that. On top of the whole 5 u prob get from a short ram.

Jeff

Cold air intakes are designed to take in more colder denser air. With that your gonna gain more lower end tourqe. The short ram will gain you more top end tourqe. DSM's are allready designed for top end more over low end.

Just to add to this. I had the fortunate ability to buy a n/t GM MAFT from PunishmentRacing while they had this option. My GM MAF is up inside the engine bay away from any moisture, but extended the piping and filter down into the fender well, behind the fog light. I haven't had any issues with water due to rain, snow or otherwise and the gains I recieved from that much direct cold air was well worth it. To sum up the difference, I needed to install larger injectors because I was running too lean. I was logging all the differences before the mods and after. Now all is good and I can't wait to make it to the track and get some numbers.

I believe for every 10°F temperature drop of intake air, an engine will gain 1% more power. I had something similar to what you wanted to do on my old Laser, it was a PITA, and I placed the filter where the intercooler would go. I noticed a little difference in sound and power. I have a short ram now on my car with a header and I am sure I suck in lots of hot air, so plan on doing something similar again. Keep up posted on what the final product turns out like:thumb:
