On my 95 gsx manual I heard the gears can handle around 400 hp before 3rd and 4th begin to go out. Would cryo treatment help to get to around 600 HP? I looked up prices and doesn't seem to cost much compared to dumping 10k plus in a dog box which I rather not have

Cryo treating is not going to add 50% more strength to your gears, unfortunately. Shot-peening and cryo are fractional increases that might buy a bit more time against a lot of torque, but they won’t make your gear set stronger than one of the better sets out there. The 93-99 3/4 set is notoriously weak in other ways, and just not the answer to high power. Dial it back or pay up, that’s 2024.

Gotta pay to play or rethink your goals.
yeah but everyone has been saying dog box and straight cut gears suck to drive. Was seeing if there's something to bump up it up a couple hundred hp on the stock 3rd and 4th gears without having to go dog box. Like putting in a better clutch, cryo treatment, shot peening, etc.

I had a big name trans shop tell me to my face that all the treatments people do to stock Dsm gears are a waste of money. That the reason they offer them is customer demand.

Our 3rd and 4th gears have the teeth ripped off the base circle, there’s not really much you can do about that.

Heavier pressure plates and "race" clutches are hard on transmissions. If you have something that grabs hard it puts a shock load on the gears. Sprung OEM type friction disks and the weakest pressure plate that holds will allow more slip when you let the clutch out which helps to not shock load the transmission.

You get people slapping the heaviest pressure plate they can buy and a puck type un-sprung disk in their car because they think more "race" parts are better and they end up with their car on jack stands for the next 4 years. Obviously at some point heavier pressure plates and puck clutches are needed but way too many people out there have them that don't need them. Also heavy clutches "promote" crankwalk so that's another reason to run the lightest pressure plate you can.

If you want to play with 600 HP for any amount of time you are going to need a dogbox or if the gearsets from NEAT work out that may be an option for you. Anything significantly over 350hp and your transmission is on borrowed time.

Breaking third gear from a roll you started at 3,500 rpm’s has nothing to do with clutch engagement.

Flat shifting into 3rd or 4th is a nono, no matter the clutch.

I've literally read both sides of that argument(nlts) a million times. Some say it's better and some say it's worse.
I’ve broken at least 20 stock gear transmissions, taken them apart and saw how they failed. Fwiw I still have less than a full dog box costs spent on trans parts.

3rd of 4th always break at the onset of peak torque, whether you roll in, or flat shift. Flat shifting makes the hit even harder.
