How much travel can a cv joint handle?

I'm wondering how much travel, in any direction, a cv joint can handle before bad things start to happen. Reason I'm asking is because I plan to drop a 6bolt I have into a sandrail chassis. Don't want to go with long travel suspension and be constantly destroying cv joints. Hoping to see something like 0*-46*, etc.
