2G Car dies when it's cold outside

I've got a 2g gst and I live in Kansas. Any time the temperature drops below maybe 40 degrees the car has difficulties staying running. I notice the lights on the dash are not as bright as the first symptom. After that it starts misfiring and sputtering. After that it dies altogether and wont start leaving me stranded on the side of the highway. Is this just a poor charging circuit? I know our alternators aren't the best.

I will be watching this thread as my gst has had this issue during the past winter months but I didn't drive it. my research has led me to coolant temperature sensor behind the thermostat housing. But u were driving I wasn't.
Did the car get to operating temperature then act up or at cold start only?

I limped it to the nearest auto part store and checked my alternator. It was putting out 12v and it said the voltage regulator was bad. Now what are the leading causes of voltage regulator failure?

Old age, power steering fluid leaking on to the alternator from above, and Heat from the exhaust.

Ok I warrantied out my old alternator for a new one and I'm still experiencing the same issue. If alternator and battery are both brand new. What could prevent them charging? I'll be checking my wires soon but it's there anything else I might need to check?

Measure the voltage on the battery terminals when the engine is above 2000 rpm. It should be over 14.0v if the charging system and battery are good.
