Good Evening everybody.
This is my first ever post on DSMtuners so please be nice LOL
I am a new Zealander in australia I have a mitsubishi lancer evo3
I have purchased a 6 bolt engine and am having a mechanic install it. while it was out of the car I asked him to put a new cambelt on and replace the water pump. I have attached two photos to show my problem. the teeth are not aligned at all he discovered this when he removed the cambelt cover. is this usual for an engine that has done 80thousand kilometres.
any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you

You guys are just guessing and making things up now because you know I'm right!! Lol to funny and you better watch who you call an idiot!! I won't even make a comment back!! Bitting tounge!! All you guys are doing is assuming!! I'm seeing the pics and reading what the o.p. has said and posted exactly what he was looking for!! Which is why he thanked me and said it helped a lot!! They obviously didn't know the proper timing marks to look for!! I've probably change more timing belts on more makes and models than both of you!! I know proper steps, especially on a 4g63, could do it with my eyes closed!!! And I've already said the importance of having it tdc and the dowels at 12o'clock the 2 cam marks meeting at 3(E)o'clock and 9(I)o'clock ruffly which also will make a nice vertical line with the head and cam mark being dead on its mark. Along with the balance shaft marks if they are installed and oil pump mark if it matters(bse)!!!! DUH!!!!

Yes, sure. I'm making things up. I would have questioned his abilities if the dowels were pointed in the 3 and 4 o'clock position. It's obvious by the pic that the engine was rolled to TDC. Now son, isn't it past your bedtime? Dont let mommy catch you on the computer this late.

And you do too need to bite your tongue. If you feel anything I said is wrong, there is always pm or you can report me to my superiors.

How can you assume the cam mark is lined up?? Never says its at tdc!! No one is showing it son!!
Thanks guys been a huge help. The mechanic has lined it all up correctly and thinks compression is good will know 100% this afternoon when he cranks the engine over. That's a very helpful video thanks again.

Last bit of proof incase anyone else wants to say I'm wrong!! And just to add if the crank mark was right on for his 2 pics and the cams were that far off 2-3 teeth. We all know the valves would be toast!! And if they arnt he is very lucky!!

Okey, we both know the key word on this issue, and that is: TDC.

Thus, I want you to PM the OP and ask him to ask the mechanic who is working on his motor if he spun the crank to TDC. If he did or didn't, then we know the correct answer.

Fair enough?

p.s. I'm just trying to keep you from getting in trouble with the MODS in the forum by reminding you to settle down. We need to keep our cool and show to other members that we are here to help and guide new members - we must lead by example here and show that can we care.

Reason why I'm not a Wiseman is that I'm not as smart as you and other experienced DSM owners since I'm fully stock and a simple DDriver, thus can only offer simple advice and simple fixes. I know nothing about mods, ECMLink and the similar-just not in my league. Thus, nobody adds rep points to my posts.

Just that I've been around the block a few times with all sorts of vehicles, love to deal with timing issues since I deal with electronics, and like the DSM the best to drive since they fit my weak back when driving one.

thx - DSM

Gotta be someone else that knows these engines around you! I think you need to spend some more time researching for a better mechanic before you hand your car over to just anyone! This could have ended badly for you, hoping it still ok and theres nothing damaged. That belt is the heart of your motor bro!
I too am confused as to why anyone would suggest the mechanic doesn't know what he's doing - or why anyone would suggest that it would be better to find a different mechanic after reading the first post. Seems to me he pointed out to the OP that the timing belt was on wrong. To assume why the new marks were put on the belt is pointless - we don't know why they were put on there or by whom. If it was the mechanic himself coming in here asking if this was normal then that would be one thing. But seems obvious the OP is trying to verify what the mechanic told him and is looking to find out more about the timing belt for his own knowledge.

We have to be careful when making suggestions about stuff like this. There is a lot of money at stake, and suggesting that the mechanic doesn't know what he's doing when there's no evidence to support that claim could lead someone down the wrong path and easily cost them extra money. I know it's a common practice to quickly write people off online as not knowing what they're doing, but in this case we would need more information before that assertion can be made.

Now let's quit the back and forth please. I'd like to leave this thread open to see what the OP comes back with.

Ok everyone was just a suggestion! Seemed alittle sketchy to me so I wrote what I wrote! Just looking out for the o.p. and his wallet. Of course I don't want him to be out funds or be worried. Was just saying to maybe think about it, who knows maybe he feels the same way, you guys don't know that! Anyway didn't know so many people would get butt hurt over it and i apologize for that guys! Just sick of all these people now a days who think they are mechanics and really don't understand the important things or really know what there doing! That's all, hoping his mechanic is a great guy and had no issues with this timing job! And can be there for the o.p. and his future needs! Not everyone sees things the same, that's why God made us different! I trust in my Lord for guidance every day and for me that's what He showed me!

Thanks guys been a huge help. The mechanic has lined it all up correctly and thinks compression is good will know 100% this afternoon when he cranks the engine over. That's a very helpful video thanks again.
"Thinks?"

It either is or it's not. It's a measurable condition. Tell your mechanic to get off his ass and check it. Ideally, he needs to do a leakdown test as well with the cams out.

Because you are a helpful part of the community, that's very commendable!
