1g Trunk Hatch not aligning (pics)

Hey guys, so I have a bit of a problem that's been bugging me for a while. This is the second 1g I've owned that the trunk door does not align with the roof. On the drivers side, the hatch is perfectly flush with the roof, like it should be, but on the passengers side the hatch is like 1/4" or so higher than the roof. What causes this and can it be fixed?

Is there a shim under the hinge? Unless the car has been wrecked or the previous owner did something to bend the metal? seems like it should be an easy fix, but I would get a friend to help hold the hatch in place while you do adjustments.

Has the car ever had any preious paintwork?

Can you take pictures of the hinges with it open?

No shims on either side of the hinge. The rest of the body is nearly flawless so the chances of it being wrecked are slim to none in my opinion.

The only panel that I can tell has been repainted is the drivers side door, couple spots where the paint ran. Other than that everything is original. Here are pics of the hinge with the hatch open
