Hey guys, I've had a problem with this since I bought the car in February. When I first bought the car I was only getting 3-4psi of boost (max). I got it back to my house and started looking into the problem and found my WG rod wasn't adjusted properly. So I adjusted the WG rod and cleaned the WG itself, and BAM, 10psi. I then re-instaled my hallman and turned the boost up. at 11psi the car started making a whining sound like a supercharger. So after further investigation, I found the manifold to turbo gasket was bad as well as the head to manifold gasket being bad. So I replaced all the turbo baskets from head to DP, hooked everything back up and now I'm getting 14 psi with no sounds but the whistle from the turbo. Now, here is where my REAL problem comes in. I'm running what looks to be a stock 14b (it says TDO5H on the housing), but I can't get more than 14 psi of boost out of the turbo, I also am not seeing more than 3psi of boost until about 3500rpms. I don't get the full 14psi of boost until about 52-5500 rpms. I don't know what is causing my turbo to spool so slow. I have replaced the WG with a new one, replaced the intake filter (even removed it to double check), checked my MAF to make sure that isn't clogged and did a leak test and so far, nothing. I have my Hallman controller MAXED out right now to get a weak 14psi. I've checked the shaft play and there really isn't any play there. Very little play that is. It doesn't smoke either. Any ideas?

Something is definatly loose either pre turbo, or after turbo..Do a boost leak test..Also while the car is running check for cracks in the manifold or crack in the turbine housing..You should be able to feel air coming out if it's a bad enough leak(crack).

Most people using 14b's see 20psi about 3000 rpms..So you have a leak somewhere. Also make sure your head to manifold bolts are tight, as well as manifold to turbo bolts are all tight..

Also you said the turbo was whining..That sounds like the turbo may be going out..So also pull off the intake pipe and check for shaft play..You should be able to find a good condition 14b for under 100 bucks shiped..

You should not raise your boost anymore until you get proper mods to do so. But check for boost leaks, and some more exhaust leaks.

I will re-check for leaks, but I've already done that and nothing. As far as the whining, it was whining before but it's not doing that anymore. Last time I pulled the turbo it didn't look cracked, but it's coming off this weekend again anyways. Also, as for shaft play, there really isn't any there. As far as the manifold bolts, I just replaced the manifold gasket about 1 month ago, the only problem I had was one of the manifold to head bolts was slightly stripped when I pulled it out. It was the bottom one on cyl 1.

As for the mods, I have the proper mods to raise my boost :). I am running full 2g piping, 2g MAF with Dejon Intake adapter, 550cc injectors, EPROM'd ecu, apexi neo tuner, 2.5in exhaust, a mechanical boost gauge. I'm getting a wideband 02 this weekend so I can fine tune the 550's as well as possibly putting a 16g on this weekend. But I'm asking about the 14b now as I'm trying to figure out what to do with it.

If your possibly putting on a 16g this weekend..Just wait it out, put on the new turbo..Make sure there are no leaks, and see if any of the same probmles arrise..

Yeah, the only problem that I am thinking of is that I thought that 16g's normally take a little longer than 14b's to spool though right? I may have been mis-informed, but I'd still like to know. I'll go and double check the manifold bolts now.

Small 16g's spool around 3k..But 16g's are a real kick in the pants when they do spool..So it's gonna be a change from the 14b..You could always put on the 16g and see what you like. You can still co back to the 14b if you don't like the 16g...You can find a 14b in the classifieds for cheap as hell..So there are options out there still..

The 16g I will be putting on will just be a temporary turbo until I finish getting my parts for my build this winter. By next spring I should have my build done to be around 550-600awhp. We will see though. So the 16g will only be on my car for just a couple of months. :)

If it's only a couple of months and plan on going much larger with the turbo..Get used to having lag..

Oh yeah I know that LOL. I had a 09 SS cobalt with a 3076 on it, and I'm ok with lag from bigger turbos, I just found it off about a 14b taking so long to spool...
