2G Best FP Turbo For Like 400 - 500WHP ?

Assuming you are on a 2G GST (will have traction issues) which FP turbo would you buy if you are looking to make between 400 - 500WHP? (on pump gas)

Would you go with a Red, Green, 68HTA V3 or something else? No budget restrictions in mind for this.

XR61-57S in a V-band or T3 housing (I'd recommend the .63A/R Turbine housing).

For a pretty penny you'll get a sweet ball bearing turbo with all the fancy turbine aero that'll make 400hp easy. It will spool fast, but not too fast, and leave you with room to grow your setup.

Pair that with a quality manifold (one from Morrison is a good recommendation as others have said) and you'll avoid the issues that typically come with trying to make power on shitty fuel with a restrictive turbo like the 68HTA. The 68 HTA is a great turbo, but I wouldn't recommend it on a pump gas car. I'd shy away from the stock DSM frame turbos in general on pump gas...You can make power, but it's a hassle and not really worth the effort IMO.

Still learning where to find all the reputable stuff, thanks again I thought I could just get one of those FP turbos and have someone bolt it up real quick & just do some other things since the fuel (1220CC FIC) & ECMLink is already there I thought it was pretty close to being done. I didn't think it'd be a hassle?

If you can find one, the FP DSM76 with the FP30 style housing. I was running mid 10s on that turbo with street tires (GSX though). I loved that turbo and only swapped to run the DSM82 in the FP30 style housing, of course I had to go bigger LOL
 
The Xona stuff is good. We mostly use PTE gen 2 BB stuff last few years but they are not as reliable on the street as other brands for sure.

I would recommend getting in touch with the manifold/ hot parts builder before buying a turbo though so everything is matched well. Matt and Annika at @MorrisonFab are very good to work with and will help you in your choice and making sure everything fits and works. There are other good builder's too but I am biased towards them as everything we ever had them build fit perfect and my own stuff is going on 6 years old and still is perfect.

The actual FP website doesn't show the XR 61-57S anymore, or at least I can't find it there.
What they show instead is this:
XRC5557S Ball Bearing Turbocharger shown on their "Xona Rotor" page.
They say it is "An update to the 6157S".
They offer it with a smaller compressor housing (X2C) and a larger compressor housing (X3C) and they show a compressor map for the turbo with each of those housings.
$1,589 plus your choice of TiAL turbine housing which adds about $500 to the price but those are awesome stainless housings, last I knew.
I bought my FP turbo directly from FP, and before I did I called them to get a dimension measuring across the compressor housing from front to back so I would know what I was getting into size-wise, thinking about wanting room for a cooling fan in front of it. I bought it with the smaller compressor housing, and I do have a fan in front of it, and plenty of air space to the engine water pipe behind it.
You can see pics of it on my Specs and Photos page, from the thumbnail that has a big truck on it.
These days they have those dimensions right on the web page. One drawing for each compressor housing.
On those drawings, the dimension I'm talking about is 6.26" for the X2C, and 7.86" for the X3C. So there is quite a difference in size. Plus the inlet and outlet diameters are different.
It does get expensive going this way when you add in the cost of a V-band or T3 exhaust manifold, and the other stuff you'd need to put it together.

Extreme PSI is very reputable.

Is there any reason why I shouldn't just get a FP ball bearing turbo?

I'm not trying to break any crazy world records over here, I would prefer for the installers job to be simple that way the install doesn't get to pricy.

Like FP is saying this one can produce 540HP & take some abuse:


I had really good luck getting new injectors by FIC so I like to support vendors whenever possible.

That L.O.P.E. Green is pretty new, I didn't even know it existed.
I'm curious to know the basic development history of the bearing section.
So I just tried calling FP to ask them about it and guess what, they are closed on Fridays these days.

The FP Xona Rotor ball bearing sections have proven out well I think. And before that they were using straight-up Garrett GT series ball bearing sections, and those have been well proven for a long time.

The basic idea of ball bearings fed from the head is fine. My car is done that way. They tell you what oil feed kit to use with this turbo.

Other than that, the compressor section should be good for what you want (73 HTZ). For pump gas and around 400 hp, look at where the 40 pounds per minute vertical line intersects the pressure ratio 3.0 horizontal line. It's in a good place on the map, around 77 percent efficiency which is very high (good). That's probably where you would wind up on pump gas, or a little higher if the turbine wheel can do it efficiently enough, and if your other bolt-ons are pretty good too.

The turbine wheel looks to be the same one used in the 68HTA V2 (60.8MM Inducer / 54MM Exducer) and also in the regular journal bearing Green. It's not the newer UHF type turbine wheel like you would get in the UHF Green or UHF Red. Short answer is - I don't know!

The same compressor (73 HTZ) mated with a UHF turbine wheel would be the "FP Green UHF 57S for DSM" and it isn't ball bearing. Yet. Note that the compressor maps tell you about the compressor only - they don't take into account anything about the turbine section of the turbo.

I just got one of these turbos. Going to put it on a built 2.3. I hope to have some numbers in a few months.
 
What do you think of the Dsm82 ?

It’s an amazing turbo! I run it at 38 psi and am very confident this car would run 9’s if I got it to the track. I run Kelford 280 cams (kind of want to drop down to K272s) which make the power come on later but the brake boosting auto eats that up quick.
 
That's pretty much a bolt on GT35r if I am not mistaken.
I think FP quit making the DSM82 several years ago?
Now FP sells the "FP Black Ball Bearing for DSM" which is about the same size but is all different parts.

I think the DSM82 was an HTA 3582 with an FP30 type turbine housing and a Garrett compressor housing with the big 4" inlet.

The "DSM Turbo Upgrades" page on that dsmparts.com website looks like a museum of FP turbos that aren't made anymore.
I think the only one they show that is accurate to a current model is the FP JB Black, which FP calls the FP Black for DSM.
The other models they show are older versions of the Red, the Green .... the 68HTA which they only show the V1 (TD05H turbine wheel), but they don't call it the V1 probably because they didn't know that yet. They don't show the V2 or V3. Which might give an idea what vintage their pages are.
If anybody really wanted to know what's up with them you'd have to call and ask a few questions!
