Basic MAFT Questions
What is it?
What does it do?
Where does it go?
Where does the xxxx color wire go?
Can I vent with a MAFT?
What MAF can I use?
Can I use a 2g MAFT with a 1g?
Can I use a 1g MAFT with a 2g?

Sorry guys !but am not really sure about this one. What does the MAFT really do and is it a good buy?thanks

No, no boost leak test yet. But, I do have the sound clip.

The first set of revs is just me stomping on the gas going WOT. The second rev is me reving past 3k with the throttle below 30% and then going WOT when it gets past 3k. It's strange because it'll rev past 3k when I do that but not if I don't rev a certain way.

You have to change the file extension to .mp3 or just drag and drop the file into winamp or something. The hosting site wouldn't allow me to put an MP3 up there and neither would the forum upload system.

Do a boost leak test before you do anything else. What size injectors are you running? When I first hooked up my MAFT I had to lean out the high setting to get it run right.

I'm fairly certain that I'm running stock injectors. I'll run a boost leak test this weekend when I get some time.

I also have another question. It's about the MAF-T. I'm not exactly clear on what the difference between the BASE tuning and RPM tuning is. What is it?

IIRC, Base is to set up your injector size, RPM is just what it sounds like, modifying the airflow based on an RPM-dependent curve.

Ok, after searching and reading i finally decided to go with the MAFT GEN 2 for my tuning base. I was just wondering if I went with the GM MAS and the MAFT GEN 2, would i also need the translator as well for the GM mas to work right?? What have all of you found out what was need to run the MAFT GEN 2??

Yeah i'm going with aem wideband o2 or the inovated wideband o2... I was thinking that you had to have the translator to make the gm mas to work but wasn't sure... I do know that i can still run the gen 2 and wideband and tune through the factory mas until i get the money for the translator..

the maft trasnlator is what makes the gm maf work. Im pretty sure you CAN NOT run the gen 2 on the stock dsm maf. You need the gm maf

You can run the stock maf on the gen 2. I had it in my galant. It has different maf setting for different vehicles preset in it. You could run a supra maf and it would translate it to a karman signal for your ecu if you wanted. Also good going with the wideband cause your going to love the tracking feature it has.

Hi I would like help such as a wiring diagram etc. to install a 1g maf translator into my 2g. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you

I just wanted to pop in and say that someone with solid knowledge of tuning with the maft should start a tech article on this because I have found it very hard to find definitive answers about tuning with it. And honestly I asked around on a couple of other sites which I probably wont go back to because all I was told to do was search and the info you find is mostly useless dribble. I am going to be installing my maft in a couple of days. It should be here tomorrow. I know that I will be returning to this thread a lot for help.

The instruction manual that comes with the MAFT has basic tuning instructions. This should be all you need to get started. You will need a logger of course and there are some great threads on logging, interpreting logs, and tuning in the log file advice forum .

I have read pretty much the whole thread, and I am still left with an unanswered question.

Will the Gen-2 be sufficent enough for tuning to run it by itself or will a chip and SAFC be recommended? The setup is an EVO Big 16g and 650's.

I'm currently running a BOV that's vented to the atmos.
I'm getting fairly sick of it bogging between shifts, and sudden off-boost situations.
I am looking into getting a greddy type-s bov so I could recirculate, just haven't found any.

Just recently saw a gm maf and translator setup for sale. If I were to get that, could I put it after my existing bov, and it would compensate for the venting, ie no running rich condition momentarily, or would it still be better to recirculate?

if you put it after the bov you will be fine and not stall and there wont be a rich condition

You should be recirculating on the stock MAS, thats why you have the problems. If you get the GM MAF and Translator you will be able to vent into the atmosphere. It will go inbetween the BOV and the TB. 6 to 8 inches away from the TB is where most have them located.

One word of warning though - the MAF-T is a hit or miss when trying to tune with it. Some people don't have problem dialing it in and getting their car running right and others end up taking it back out out of frustration and putting the stock MAS back in.

Just out of curiosity, what MAS does the VR-4 use? Is it the same as a 1G?

Welcome to DSMtuners! The Greddy Type S is discontinued. It was replaced by the Greddy Type RS BOV. I'm sure you can find used Greddy Type S BOVs in the classified section. Beware of fake Type S BOVs on ebay. To be able to properly vent to the atmosphere you'll need to use the GM MAFT in blow through setup (GM MAFT between the BOV and the throttle body). You'll need to either fabricate your current UICPs or purchase pipes specifically for blow through setup. Please fill out your mod list in your profile. Please search before posting new threads. There's a huge thread about this already. Link below:
