I went on Yahoo a couple days ago and found this article about the President's new plan on making cars cleaner. By doing this he is going to require all auto makers to produce cars that have 35.5+ MPG. Unfortunately, all the prices will shoot up $1,300 for each car. But according to Obama's ideas, it will be the equivlant of taking 117 million cars off the road by 2016. He also says that it will destroy the major competition that auto makers have and therefore worry about other vehicle constraints.

My opinion on the whole situation is almost contradicting. I like good MPG, but I think there should be a little more competition. Such as setting the MPG minimum to 25 MPG city/hw.

I'd like to hear other opinions on this. It's kind of weird that we won't be hearing about MPG arguments in the next couple of years. I wonder how they're going to get sports cars 35 MPG.

Here's the article:
Obama touts plan for cleaner, more efficient cars

Let's try to focus more on the automobile industry and the cars themselves, and not dive into the political side of this (since political discussions aren't allowed on here). Plus, I know we all like talking about cars more :thumb:

I think it's good to see that he's trying to get something accomplished, but I'm just unsure how the companies will react. I knew they had a goal that I read about a few years back, but I have no idea what came of it. I would like to see a truck that gets 30mpg though! But, next thing you know, trucks will have 1.8l engines and cars will have motorcycle engines to help keep their fleet's average mpg up. Either that or they will cut the power on all cars, including the sports cars.

I actually switched out the clip, but both are good and pertain to the thread. And who's awesome Ben Stein or Glenn Beck?

I guarantee you GM will try to redo themselves but their cars a just plain crappy.Chrysler will let Fiat bring some good cars back and Ford/Mazda will previal with the american made hybrid cars. For the 35 mph gallon I think the IMPORTS will take over.

That's the damnable thing about it though - Fiat is not highly regarded at all in Europe. It is quite possibly the worst company you could ever hope to 'rescue' your company, not counting perhaps Yugo. Heck - they are even considered garbage in Italy to some of the people that work for them! I don't know if you've ever ridden in a Fiat before, but they are rather homely. I think Peugeot/Citroen would have been a better pick. Ford sold off most of their shares of Mazda, but Ford is doing quite well enough on it's own engineering-wise. Honestly, I see GM and Chrysler having a very tough time with the fuel efficiency requirements. Ford shouldn't have a problem at all, except their super duty trucks. I really do hope for the best with GM and Chrysler, but I don't see it happening unless GM goes back to Honda to purchase engines.

Um, Ben Stein also suggested people should invest more in Banking and Finance agencies about a year and a half ago. He was yelling at this other guy that said there's a banking crisis coming from sub-prime loans. Ben Stein is a comedian that should never be billed as an economist. He's nothing more than a pop star that has assisted the bastardization of news into the trash it is today.

If Don Henley had any idea of how his song Dirty Laundry would apply so well today he likely would never have written the song... or shot himself.

Remember that the C.A.F.E. (that's the 35mpg standard they are talking about) CAFE stands for Corporate Average Fuel Economy.

So If they put 2 seats on a lawn mower and get 100 mpg the rest of the fleet can stay the same.

But why at this time when Detroit is struggling to survive, would you hit them with even more restrictions?:ohdamn:

Ben Stein is alot more than what ya think. You might need to read up on him..He was a comedian later on in life..

Ben Stein (Benjamin J. Stein) was born November 25, 1944 in Washington, D.C., (He is the son of the economist and writer Herbert Stein) grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, and attended Montgomery Blair High School. He graduated from Columbia University in 1966 with honors in economics. He graduated from Yale Law School in 1970 as valedictorian of his class by election of his classmates. He also studied in the graduate school of economics at Yale. He has worked as an economist at The Department of Commerce, a poverty lawyer in New Haven and Washington, D.C., a trial lawyer in the field of trade regulation at the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C., a university adjunct at American University in Washington, D.C., at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. At American U. He taught about the political and social content of mass culture. He taught the same subject at UCSC, as well as about political and civil rights under the Constitution. At Pepperdine, he has taught about libel law and about securities law and ethical issues since 1986.

In 1973 and 1974, he was a speech writer and lawyer for Richard Nixon at The White House and then for Gerald Ford.

my only question is why wasn't it done before the goverment is up to no good if htey could of did this before why didn't they? It's all a bunch of bull i heard years ago they could of did this but they didn't. They wanted our money form the gas we were buying... Now they need to make money but now it's important to save.... Yeah right it must be good for them one way or another dont think there watching out for us... :barf::barf::barf:

Yeah. A politician decrees a result, and physics will adapt to conform.

Some people should stick to what they know. If there is anything.

They can all save tons of money in research and just introduce one or two small turbo diesel cars to the US market. Just saw an ad the other day for a vw (missed which one) but 58mpg. It's using the tech we've had for years and ridding our cars of all the extra crap they've had added on to them over the years.

I completely agree. Like laserspeeddemon said above, there are just too many laws these days. I think if the government just stepped out, everything would "ride" out, and be ok. The economy goes up and down every 20 years it seems.

Hopefully this means we'll see clean diesel taking off to compete with hybrid. At least then we'll still be able to have some power potential to play with. We need to reduce our dependency on that sand box part of the world we keep fighting wars in somehow.

Im all for the gas saving cars, but it seems like most of them have around only 90 horse.
If they made a fuel efficent car with 200 horse, I would be happy.

What people really don't understand is that we are not as dependent on the Middle East as they claim. And OPEC is a joke and does not control the price of gasoline.

That being said we need to use our own sources of oil, IE drill in Alaska.

Japanes manufacturers cars have been getting 30mpg+ for years, that's why they are putting people out of business. Yeah, maybe dependability might have something to do with it.
My 93 integra pos gets over 30mpg and its 16years old.
Many toyota and honda 4cyl's have been doing it for over 20years.
Ok, a 1.8 dsm probably can pull 30+ but dependability isn't our reputation:D

Lightweight and tall sixth gears. Problem solved. Corvettes get over 30 mpg on the highway.
