Who thinks thinks global warming and the shortage of oil are blown way out of proportion?

Lightweight and tall sixth gears. Problem solved. Corvettes get over 30 mpg on the highway.

Which Vette are you looking at???

I compared 4 models of the 2009 Vette (Base Convertible, Base Coupe, Z06 Hardtop, and ZR1) and the base models were the closest at 26mpg highway (Z06 at 24mpg highway and ZR1 at 20mpg highway).

Japanes manufacturers cars have been getting 30mpg+ for years, that's why they are putting people out of business. Yeah, maybe dependability might have something to do with it.
My 93 integra pos gets over 30mpg and its 16years old.
Many toyota and honda 4cyl's have been doing it for over 20years.
Ok, a 1.8 dsm probably can pull 30+ but dependability isn't our reputation:D

My 87' Integra gets 30 MPG. :thumb:

Every one else: This isn't what I think is going to happen, but more of a rhetorical question.
Do you think that Obama is doing this so American auto standards are raised and more people buy American cars therefore helping out the American Economy?

No! He is doing it solely to force his own liberal environmental ideology on Americans. :notgood:

Many of my friends whom had voted for him are mad at him because of all his lies to get elected, and is no longer following through on them. But yes I dislike socialists and progressives.

Really? Looks more to me like he is trying to help out the auto companies. Japanese car manufactures have been doing swimmingly with their 35+MPG vehicles and have put American car companies out of business. Just saying...

No, the whole world economy is bad. Both Honda and Nissan are doing horrible. I would know, I know someone that works for Eaton Corp. They manufacture parts for foreign and domestic auto makers.

I would really like to give my opinion here. But the answer is in the political arena and politics are against the rules.

Dang those stinking rules.:tease:

Just saying what people have gotten in the real world. I get about 25-28 mpg in my CTS-V which has the same engine/trans combo as a C5 Zo6 but weighs like 600-700 lbs more.

people that care about mileage will buy cars that get good mileage.

people that dont, are getting punished.

yet again its government moving in to control more of our lives. If i wanted a gas sipping prissy mobile, id get a honduh. Cant tow a boat with a honduh though.

Good thing its a "fleetwide" standard. Manufacturers will just build shitloads of crappy fuel efficient econoboxes to offset the powerful vehicles. Even if nobody buys them.

Maybe someone should suggest that auto makers build cars that will appeal to buyers and actually stimulate a demand, so that taxpayers aren't bailing them out for building fugly neutered econobox crap no self respecting individual would willfully drive. "I'm going down to the store honey, have you seen that paper bag with the holes cut out that I put over my head when I drive?"

For the environmentalist's argument: Why impose 35 mpg? Why not fund the development of alternative fuels?

It's almost like they're trying to suck every last drop of blood out of the already hemorrhaging artery that is the US auto industry. It's bleeding money out of every orifice and they're saying let's put it on strict new regulations so it won't clot off and then give it more transfusions of bailout money to keep it alive. Dumbasses.

Nearly every president has lied or "streched the truth" to get elected.:aha: I still hold on to the hope that Obamam will do good things for our country but I kinda doubt any good he does will counter the long term damage that the stimulus garbage will do.:barf: Obama is a great speaker. Bush was a horrible speaker.:ohdamn: In my opinion that is one of the main reasons Obama got elected. So many people were tired of having a president that made us all look stupid when he talked. Hoestly, just once listen to a minute of Obamas speeches then mute it for 30 sec at a time and you will hear all the bull he really says. People just get sucked into his speeches when he talks.:hmm: I believe one of 2 things will happen in the U.S. within the next 10-20 years. We will become completely socialist or the PEOPLE will finally see what is going on and say ENOUGH.:hellyeah: There are a few people who see it already, but the numbers arent nearly high enough. Honestly people we need to be educationg ourselves on history and the different types of governments. Otherwise were going to head down the road that we as americans dont want, and it will be too late by the time the majority realizes it.:banghead:

Trying to help out the auto industry by buying up the company and putting it in the hands of one of the laziest and most laughable organizations in the world?(UAW for those that cant read between the lines) The company is a sinking ship and it can all be blamed on useless overpaid workers that can never fired no matter how lazy and useless they are.

Well as more and more laws are created. People will rebel. It's America.

My company is a tier 1 supplier to both foreign and domestic auto makers. They are in completely different positions. The auto markets overseas and in Brazil are actually posting gains in sales. Foreign automakers may have lost money for the first time in YEARS, but they are FAR from declaring bankruptcy.

GM has cancelled orders for large big volume lines, they are shutting down for most of the summer, and we all know how Chrysler looks. The only domestic automaker still going ahead with parts they had us engineer is Ford, and even they have slowed down and cancelled projects.

when i see the president and all the ceo's driving around in smart cars/toyota camry's.....i might be inclined to buy one THEN.

but that'll never happen

...Bush was a horrible speaker.:ohdamn: ...We will become completely socialist or the PEOPLE will finally see what is going on...

Hey now George W. Bush is my favorite president, and I'm not just saying that. Second I will not live in a socialist country, take that however you want, but I'm not going to be moving away.:shhh:

I like Bush. He couldnt speak for damn though. My personal opinion is that Bush got handed a shit sandwich and did the best anybody could in his shoes. Alot of people dont realize that the president really dont have alot of effect on things except for how other countries see us. Besides that I liked the fact that Bush spoke his mind quite often. To hell with worrying about offending everyone who thinks different than you. This ountry used to be great because the MAJORITY ruled. Not because we were so worried about offending everybody who though differently than the bulk of the people. Tolerance is great. So is acceptance, But to expect everybody to adapt to the few is wrong.

Bush did speak his mind often - unfortunately he didn't have anything intelligent to say, other than people and fish can co-exist peacefully. Cheney was the brains behind his administration, but that's for another story. When I lived in Europe it was genuinely embarrassing when someone would come up to me on the tog and ask me if I agreed with our 'idiot in chief'. I'm a very proud American, but I was very much against the Bush administration. I'm not an Obama fan either (I'm a conservative), but at least he can articulate his thoughts in a manner in which he commands respect from others. I can appreciate that. These fuel standards are a long time coming and are sorely needed. We are a slave to other countries right now for resources - wouldn't we be a stronger country if we were energy independent? People oftentimes mistake progress for being liberal - progress is the seed in which our future grows from. We cannot simply stand still and wait for our oil to run out - it is the responsibility of everyone to prepare ourselves for an oil-less future. Conservation via fuel mileage requirements is a small step, but a step none the less. To do otherwise is to burden future generations with our lack of foresight and preparedness.

No we are not a slave to other countries because of our oil dependencies ( common misconception). And oil will not run out of oil for another 200 years if not much longer.

I could careless if you want to believe the media and their false hype on the subject. Do you own research. I had to write a 20 page college term paper on Peak Oil Theory and Geopolitics. I read alot of scholarly journals and economic studies.
