AEM WBo2 wiring help needed

Im about to install my AEM wideband, and have a few questions. #1, can anyone provide me a pinout diagram for the ECU for a good 12v power source, ground, and stock narrowband wire. I plan to just replace the stock o2 sensor in the o2 housing with the AEM sensor, then wire the AEM sensor to put out the narrowband signal to the ECU.

#2 I know the general rule is to put the wideband sensor 36'' from the turbo or something like that, will I be OK to put the AEM sensor in the stock location(o2 housing)?

I know this is probably :beatentodeath: but I did search a bit and only came up with questions pertaining to AEM wideband and logging/tuning.

You aren't supposed to put the wideband in the first 02 sensor spot because the wideband voltage readings are different than a narrowband if I remember correctly and you don't want your fuel trims getting messed up. The wbo2 also shouldn't be placed that close to the turbo due to heat that could kill the sensor before its time.

I know you didn't ask this but also just a heads up on the factory o2 sensor. I'm not sure how the 1g o2 sensor is, but if it is a heated sensor and you replace it with the wideband, you might end up throwing a CEL for an 02 heater circuit.

Not on a 1g... I also had that concern and I asked that question to the DSM-ECU message board. Jeff O. made it clear to me that the 1g ECU does not look for/check the heater circuit. Therefore, you can unplug the stock sensor and wire up the white wire from the AEM unit to PIN #4 of the ECU.

A buddy of mine has had his AEM sensor in the o2 housing for well over a year now with zero problems. I know the heat right there wont be a problem, but will the readings be off?

AEM recommends distance to be 36" away from the source (Exhaust Port) on a turbo application. I'm sure you could mount it in the stock location and be fine for a while. But, when the sensor fails and you need to get a new one don't blame AEM for making a crappy product. Just know that you deliberately failed to follow the installation instructions which could void your warranty just to save a few bucks on welding.

It cost me $20 to have a friend weld mine in. And this is where I put it:

Im not running no o2 sensor by choice, its how I bought the car. Why would the AEM sensor not send the ECU the correct voltage? There is an output for the narrowband signal, for this exact purpose. Can you elaborate please?

In the default position the AEM UEGO analog output would provide a 0V-5V signal, but if you set the selector to P4 it should simulate a narrowband 0V-1V signal. Is it perfectly calibrated to our ECUs? I have no idea.

Most people put the wideband further back in the exhaust stream and let the narrowband that's up front handle the fuel trims. I certainly feel safer using the O2 sensor thats designed for that type of abuse to manage my engines fuel needs, but I put a shitload of money into my engine, so I guess I'm baised.

The wideband should ideally be mounted 36" after the turbo for maximum life. I read a chart somewhere, that estimated failure in as little as 4000 miles if mounted in the front O2 sensor position. Some people run their oil longer than that.

Anyways, here's what AEM says about it:
"Q: Do I still need to run my factory exhaust gas sensor if I have an AEM wideband UEGO controller?
A: Maybe. If your vehicles Engine Management System uses the O2 sensor for fuel control and you cannot recalibrate it for this different sensor signal, then you will need to retain the factory sensor. If you are running a factory ECU then you will need to continue to send it the factory narrow-band signal or it will throw a Check Engine Light (CEL). Additionally, on emission controlled vehicles in California you MUST retain the unmolested stock emission system for emissions legality."

They also say this:
"A weld-in M18 X 1.5 boss is supplied for sensor installation. Mount the O2 sensor in the
exhaust system at least 18 inches downstream from the exhaust port.
If you anticipate
high EGT's (over 800C), run a turbocharger, run at high RPM for extended periods of
time or plan on running leaded race fuel then you must mount the sensor at least 36
inches or more downstream of the exhaust port as all of these can cause the sensor to
overheat.
On turbocharged engines the UEGO sensor must be installed after the
turbo charger, if not, the pressure differential will greatly affect the accuracy of
the unit. For accurate readings, the sensor must be mounted before catalytic
converters and/or auxiliary air pumps. To prevent collection of liquids between the
sensor housing and sensor element during the cold start phase, the installation angle
should be inclined at least 10° from horizontal with the electrical connection upwards,

All of the above quotes and diagrams are directly from AEM, but I would dissagree with them on the part that says "or it will throw a Check Engine Light (CEL)". They are making light of it (no pun intended). If your ECU is expecting a signal of approximately 0.5 volts to represent stoich, and your UEGO sends a signal of 2.35V for instance (default position) during stoich operation, obviously your engine would always run extremely lean. In my opinion that is much more serious than just having a light on.

You'll need to get a stock O2 sensor installed along with the AEM. Although it does provide output voltage signals to simulate a narrowband sensors, none of them have the correct calibration for our ECU's. I've written about this in the past. I'll see if I can dig up the thread.
 
I have mine right after the flex joint. When I first got mine I ran it in the o2 housing because I got it on the group buy before I got my dp. I emailed zeitronix about it because of the debate over whether it was safe to run it so close to the turbo. They were against running it so close because of the exhaust temps would be too high for the o2. So in other words you will be sacrificing longevity/accuracy for convenience. I would only do it as a temp solution.
 
According to Spyderturbo007s post (that his previous post links to), the P3 setting emulates Nernst cell output. Either that's a typo, or AEM has updated/changed their design. Looking at the chart AEM provides, P4 would be the closest:

However as he stated, and as I suspected, the calibration woud be out of whack.
