Hello everyone!
My name is aaron and im about to buy my 1st dsm. Its a 95 mitsub eclipse gsx w/ 107,325 miles on it. Motor has been rebuilt w/ 6 bolt crank conversion, 1g head and intake, wiseco pistons and eagle rods, mitsubishi big 16g turbo, apexi n-1 exhaust, slowboy manual boost controller, fmic. I havent been able to drive the car yet. But the guy selling the car excepted my cash offer. Anyway the guy just informed me it has one issue. He said that sometimes when driving,(more when u get on it hard) a sensor will get tripped and then the car will start to run lean. He thought it was due to the coolant sensor that he replaced after the issue arose. He replaced the sensor with one from a galant. But he's not sure if thats what the problem is even. He then says that the car still runs prime. But when this sensor gets tripped. The only way to fix it is to shut the car off and then everything will reset..well thats all I kno for now. This is also my first dsm post. Let me kno if yal can help me..

I don't think the seller really knows what he is talking about. I don't see how a coolant sensor will cause it to run lean. I'm sure the car just needs a tune. Turn down the mbc to around 13psi and see if that helps untill you can get it tuned. Also, is the fuel system upgraded? If not it is probably getting fuel cut due to having the boost turned up too high for the fuel system to handle.

thanks black widow97 for taking the time to read my post and giving me good feedback.. i talked to the seller this morning for a short sec and he informed me that when he put the 16g turbo in a few months back. he noticed that the o2 sensor looked bad..could this make the car run lean as well.. and he also said that he could tell its running lean by his air/fuel gauge. and here is a list of all the mods on the car..fuel system is not upgraded either....

-Engine

6 Bolt crank conversion
1G head
1G intake manifold
Wiseco pistons
Eagle rods
ARP head studs
Koyo Rad aluminum radiator
Slim electric radiator fans
NGK plugs and wires
GReddy upper and lower intercooler pipes
GReddy type-24 front mount intercooler
GReddy RS blow off valve
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries BIG 16g turbo
Injen intake
Apexi N-1 exhaust
SlowBoy racing manual boost controller
Light weight Aluminum fly wheel

If it's one of those ooh look at all the flashy lights kinda A/F gauges it's just a shot in the dark whether it's lean or not. But if it's an actual wideband then you could believe it is lean. Any pictures?

Yeah, I dont see any fuel system modification. If he id running too much boost, this lean condition could be fuel cut. Did he say the gauge just goes to lean or did he say the car starts to act funny, like beel like it is cutting out and/or jerking or anyting like that?

he's running about 21 lbs of boost and he said that the a/f gauge jus trips and shows its running lean so he pulls over and shuts the car off and then turns it right back on and it fixes the problems until it does it again. it usually does it when hes driving it harder than normal.. thanks for all the good replies everyone.. you guys are good.

okay sorry i jus talked to him.. hes had it at 21 before but he usually jus runs it at 16lbs..thats where it is now..i told him to turn it down some more

He better show you some damn proof that he ran wiseco pistons and eagle rods. Also I would love to see what he's tuning the "21 psi" with. Ask him. And whats done to the clutch to handle his mods.

well that could be the whole problem right there.. (dont tell him this ifyou getting the car cheap, in the fear he'll back out of the sell)
But he is running a big 16g at 21psi.. that way tomuch airflow for the stock fuel system!
Even Running 16psi is pushing it without the support fuel modifications!!
and Yes the o2 sensor can cause the car to run rich or lean if it bad, but it seems to be more of the mass of air hes flowing!
To be save i would turn the boost down to 12psi and do a full tune up... filter, spark plugs, wires, o2 sensor(s), oil filter, oil, and fuel filter!
THEN check the timing belt and do the maintance on it before raggin it out! I PROMISE you it will be the best thing for the car!

thanks skatershawn and everyone else who replied. so here's the new scoop. he runs 16lbs of boost and he has receipts from roadraceengineering.com where the previous owner got all the upgrades. however he thinks the fuel system was upgraded with 550 cc injectors and 255 walbro fuel pump?? idk i think im with blackwidow97 on this..idk if he knows what hes talking about or not. i think he could b more of a noob than i am..i would atleast know what upgrades were on my car..anyway when the car shows on the a/f gauge that its running lean he can tell a small difference in the way its running, however he said when his gf is in the car she cant tell the difference. so it must not be to bad. im buying the car for $4000 with the following upgrades.....

-Engine

6 Bolt crank conversion
1G head
1G intake manifold
Wiseco pistons
Eagle rods
ARP head studs
Koyo Rad aluminum radiator
Slim electric radiator fans

GReddy type-24 front mount intercooler
GReddy RS blow off valve
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries BIG 16g turbo
Injen intake
Apexi N-1 exhaust
SlowBoy racing manual boost controller
Light weight Aluminum fly wheel

let me know if you all think im getting a good deal on the price.. and also i will definitely replace everything skatershawn mentioned about to be on the safe side. oh and the only pic i have of the car is the one im using as my profile pics.. thanks again everyone.. your comments are very useful. cannot wait for more comments..

I wish I had an "eclipse 420a bumper" Must be special edition

hahaha jerk LOL

its sounds great for the price only if everything is legit..

some dsmers like to buy a gst/x as virgin as possible and dump money in it because they trust there own work or know everything they are doing that may cause an issue..

now this car has been modified and you have no "true" knowledge of whats going on.. whether it has a hack jobs or not. inspect it veeery well .. you dont wanna throw 4gs in the trash after a few months

i dont mean to scare/ discourage you from buying it because it could actually a good buy.. just try to gather alot of info pictures and all and let US KNOW

Doesn't sound like a good deal to me. Sound's like the owner before the guy you're looking at buying it from sold it as a project and this new owner has no clue what he's doing and either F'ed something up or doesn't want to deal with it anymore. I personally would keep looking. It's pretty well molested.

I agree^^ if I could do it all over again, I would look for a untouched stock DSM,

make sure I did all the maintinence, and then follow the upgrade path, posted on the forums here.

I paid 4000 for mine and I have dumped over 8000 in after that cause I thought I knew what I was doing. then I found this site and realized that I was an idiot.

IMO unmolested is better unless you know and trust the seller.
but it could very well be something very simple to remedy as well just be very carefull and I would ask the seller to fix it first.

This.

Unless he can back up everything with proof, I'd pass. Sounds like he may be being shady with what's done to the car/what's going on with it.

Did you find out if its just a narrow band wideband or if its digital like AEM or AFX widebands?

When I was first reading this first thing that came to mind of random misfire. Since its a 2g with a 6 bolt and 1g head then obviously it has a 6 bolt swap and with this swap without dsmlink because the different CAS from a 1g and 2g are used it causes a random misfire. You'd know this because you run lean and the car is running on 3 cylinders which make it sound like a Sti or wrx. You then have to shut the car off and turn it back on to reset the ecu from thinking it has a misfire. I know this because it happens to me with my 2g and 6 bolt swap, but I have link and it still does it for some odd reason. Anyway hope this helps its only a different view. It could be many things. Good luck with the buy.

Thanks dsmtbopwr and misterbeechy for the good pointers..dsmking idk about the 420a bumper either. Its definitely ### LOL however thats an easy fix. Anyway ill ask tomorrow about the gauges. I might even drive an hour to see it. By looking at the picture he sent me its definitely not digital..you think buying the ECMLink V3 package so I can have my best friend tune it will help..it kinda sounds like it would. Correct me if im wrong, but the problem has only been happen a few months..hes had the car for atleast a year..dont quote me on that though. Ill find out more today but anyway what I was getting at is the problem hasnt always been there. Jus occured recently. So im thinking its an easy fix, also all u have to do is turn the car on and off and the problem is fixed. And the seller also said it only does it really if hes driving it somewhat hard. Idk tho. Thanks everyone for all the good replies so far. Lets keep troubleshooting and ill try to get more info. Hav a good day everyone

no new info..going to go look at the car soon today..ill bring back some new and better info..hopefully some pics as well
