Hello, I picked up an 89 Dodge Colt Vista AWD 2.0L recently. A survivor only 31000 miles! I believe it has the SOHC 4G63. So I did the timing belt, lined up all the marks, and put it back together. Now the engine makes a terrible vibration around 4000 RPM. I DID search the forum here and I understand that I must have gotten the Oil pump balance shaft, which is the bottom right pulley, out of phase. I found instructions on here for the DOHC 4G63 that say you may need to rotate the shaft once or twice to get it back in phase.

Is it the same for my old SOHC motor? 3 turns of the pump is one turn of the balance shaft?
thanks

Solution
There are two timing marks for the balance shafts. Most likely you have set the balance shafts timing improperly. You should upload a pic. So we can see and tell you.

Yes it'd the same for SOHC. The most fool proof method to check that its right is the screwdriver method in the service manual

ok. I had the illustration of the screwdriver thing, but no text. I wondered what that was about. heh

Deff balance belt out of time. The way i do it is i let the counter weight bring the timing mark where it should be. You dont want to set the timing mark while having to hold the gear in place if the gear wants to move on its own rotate it 1 spin until you feel as if there is no weight.

The hole is blocked by the weight one every 3 times the mark lines up. The one where the screwdriver goes in is the right one. The above post works also but only on a used seal. You will notice the shaft tries to turn towards the weights neutral position. The only position where the mark tries to line up is the neutral position. Any other time the shaft tries to fall away from the mark. Hope that makes sense.

I'm having trouble locating the plug/bolt for the screwdriver hole. Partly because I did it in the dark! Looking from the driver side at the back of the motor, there is a 14mm bolt that is on the far side of the rear motor mount. Down low. The bolt doesn't look like it is doing anything except plugging a hole. Is that the one?

Yes that sound right. Below the intake manifold. You can judge where the balance shaft would be and the bolt lies in the same vertical plane roughly.

Here it is! It should be plugged with a flange head bolt. Like Paul said, there's a bulge in the block for the balance shaft.

We have a 91 Colt Vista AWD too! Same generation. Are you doing anything to it? We're in the process of a 4g63t swap. It's a rad car haha.

Yup I found the hole. I got the motor put back together today and it is running great.

No plans for the car really. It sat in a neighbors yard for many years with a bad clutch. The landlord told her to get rid of it. So I took it in. It is not a fast car with this motor, that is for sure. But the AWD works great on icy roads. i'm surprised how well it gets around.

I can't believe it seats 8 people!! LOLs
