I decided to be on the safe side and got my timing belt, water pump, balance shaft belt, all the pulleys and bearings, and all other components replaced. I did not do this myself because of lack of time and space so I took it to a mechanic. Also, I had the A/C belt tensioner puelley and belt replaced ( the old puelly got stock and the belt broke).

I got the car today and the engine is not shaking or anything like that but I can feel the vibrations all over the car and as I take the RPMs higher the vibrations are harder. It feels like if I had solid metal mounts.

Any ideas on what can be causing this?

Before the timing belt work it didnt feel like that and the whole car is vibrating alot

Most mechanics DO NOT KNOW HOW TO TIME a dsm...Where i am most shops mess up the engine and are not responsible to fix them...valves bend , engines vibrate etc ..If you don't make sure they know how to time a dsm or even know what an interceptor engine is , go else where

Balance shaft is 180 degrees out of time. It is one full rotation of the oil pump.

Agreed. If all the marks were lined up properly and the engine vibrates, the rear shaft is 180* out of time.

Like others are saying, don't take it to a mechanic unless they have tons of experience with these cars. The lax timing belt jobs that work on Honda's won't last long on a Mitsubishi. Fix it yourself and use VFAQ.com for a reference.

What i would recommend is for you to find other DSMers around your area and maybe pay them a little bit to do it for you so you can get it done right and that way you might learn to do it later on yourself.

Thanks, I will be on top of things tomorrow and Ima let the mechanic know about the 180 degree out of timing balance shaft. The guy is a good mechanic, he has a Drag race car himself but its a Toyota :/...I will let him know about the suggestions you guys gave me. Thanks alot. And probably I will look for a DSMer next time to help me out that way I learn things myself

What's the fuzz' speed machines gotta do with a dsm, aye?

Mitsu is about the only motor that used belt driven balance shafts where no other 4cyl motor in this era doesn't use them (even the 420A has no balance shafts being a rather simple motor when doing the belt timing) - why the mechanic prob didn't know about this procedure.

The GM 4300 Vortec V-6 (4.3L, 262 CID .. a 350 CID block with the front two cylinders cut off ) has a balance shaft, but located up in the cam area-driven by a chain.

I had to even go to VFAQ to get the right procedure to get the BS shaft on the oil pump in phase (and I love their little trick to do it without taking out that bolt to shove a screwdriver in there to check phase) when I started to work on 4G37 motors.

What's lucky is that the lobes on the oil pump BS are not interfering with the crank shaft lobes where otherwise, you'd really hear some metal to metal clanking sound - really telling that the oil pump BS is definitely 180 degrees out of phase.

Good luck - DSM

I dont think its 180 doesnt the rear balance shaft spin 3 times per crank revolution? The best bet is to manually check jt via factory procedures. It isn't "180 out" quite exactly. You tell your mechanic that he will be confused or he wont believe you. This guy better know how to set tension correctly also. I will bet he does not.

Allow me to explain further. Even if the oil pumpsprocket (which turns the rear balance shaft) shows it is in time it may not be. Here is why. There are two gears behind the cover. If I recall corretly every time the oil pump gear spins one full revolution (back in time) the balance shaft turns 1/3 (120 degrees). So it is only "in time" once every three revolutions. You can check this manually by removing a bolt on the side of the block and sticking a screwdriver through the hole. Only when it's "in time" will the screwdriver go through. The other two times the hole is blocked by the weight on the shaft. The factory manual is very detailed.

IIRC the rear BS when in time before the belt is installed, should fall CCW, if it falls CW, then it is wrong.

Also there is an access port in the block to help set and hold the rear BS shaft, a screwdirver will fit in there and hold the BS on the flat side.

ok, so after taking the car to the mechanic he eventually did not believe me that the balance shaft was out of time, so I made him take it appart, and I followed the advice and instructions given by all of you to set it in time, it was eventually 1 turn off time of the oil pump sproket. He helped me get it back together and in less than 4hrs we corrected the timing and my car is back on the road running better than before as I also adjusted some other things here and there.
Now for the next time I will be able to do the timing belt myself.

Thanks for the Help
