Hey guys i was wondering if somebody can point out where the crankshaft timing mark is ..I see the indention on the crankshaft position plate but i don't see where its suppose to line up to?? if possible please post a picture and im working on a 98/99 4g63 motor
Thanks
ill see if i can take a picture in awhile to show you what i have

Alright, so here we go. TDC is lined up perfectly. Rotated the motor and landed back at TDC. Pulled the pin and maintained tension. Without using the cam gear tool and pulling all slack out, I am now off half a tooth on the CAM gears. Is there any wiggle room with the cam marks?

You don't understand that your engine is NOT the early 4g63. You don't set the timing with the horizontal timing marks as the early 4g6. You have to set the timing as the late 4g6.
Your timing marks are on the valve cover and you must use the dowel pin position "B".

From what I'm seeing is that my evo 8 4g63 is supposed to use the A dowel pins, but the marks on the valve cover are supposed to be used for the timing, not the 3 and 9 o'clock marks on the gears.

You are seeing AI's wrong info. A and B is just called by this specific manufacturer. If a 4g6 DOHC cam gear has two dowel pin hole, usually it's distinguished by DSM/EVO 1~3 (A) and EVO 4+ (B), doesn't matter how it's called.
Actually you can still use the A position if you like but in that case you will have to re-mark the EVO 4+ timing mark in the red circled tooth. But I see that this gear already has the EVO 4+ timing mark at 6 o'clock in your pic, that's why I am telling you to use the B to prevent confusion. And forget about the horizontal timing marks on gears. You won't use it for EVO 4+.
