Hey people,

I got this ECU as a backup for my Europe spec 1G (N/T, 2.0 150hp).
I opened it up to check for any leaking capacitors which I would expect on 90s car electronics.
There’s sadly quite a bit of corrosion on one of the components.
Didn’t plug my car into it yet, I am looking for advice whether that’s a good idea.
Is this broken? Fixable?
I know how to solder and could replace capacitors or other components if that makes sense.
Thanks in advance.

Yes it's broken currently but I've seen worse repaired.
It will need a replacement for the E538 hybrid IC 110. Those black squares are thin film resistors and the corrosion has trashed them and some of the circuit traces. Replacements pretty much only come from salvaging other ECUs.

It's not just replacing capacitors at this point. All the circuit traces corroded and around the corrosion need to be cleaned and inspected for continuity.

Thanks for the quick answer! Damn thats really unfortunate, because these ECU's don't come up for sale often here in Germany. I'll try cleaning it all up, replacing the capacitors and checking the traces. Worst thing it doesn't work.

I can't do any harm to my car if I try it out right?

I wouldn't put that into a car until it's been repaired. As it sits right now I wouldn't be surprised if it wouldn't start the car and applying power to it could short the ECU out making it's issues worse.
