Bought a 97 gsx and have been having a fun time trying to get it to idle normal.

I was pulling the 1g intake manifold off so I can put a 2g intake manifold on but the the intake side on the head looks to be port matched to the 1g intake manifold. I wanted to put a new intake gasket and put a 2g intake manifold on but now I’m not too sure what I should do.

Also it has Evo 560 pink top injectors in it. I thought I had a set of stock injectors but can’t find them in my hoard. The first time I looked at the car it had ECMLink in it and when I finally bought it and got it home I noticed no more ECU with ECMLink, instead it had a 95-96 ECU. I don’t have a spare 97 ECU I do have a black box ECU from a 99 gst. Any input is much appreciated

That likely isnt a 2g head. If I recall a 2g manifold won't seal.

The two ecus I have I could be wrong on the year of the md326328 ECU but in pretty sure it was from a 95 or 96

Shit I thought the 1g heads have 2.0 stamped on passenger side and 2g heads have g6 stamped on it

Don't trust the case. Open it.

Why not run the 1g manifold? You obviously have the ports for it.

Inside of ECU.
1683 stamped on it which corresponds to E2T61683 p/n MD326328 for a 2g 7/96-5/97 years.

Looks like I’m going to have to. I was just trying to get it back to as close to stock form as possible. The coil packs are bolted to the shock tower and the MAP sensor is just hanging connected to the vacuum line on the BOV with a MAP adapter since it had the 1g intake manifold on originally.

Sounds like a 97 ecu to me

Yup I forgot about checking the the numbers on the inside to confirm. Is there any other ways to check what head I have besides the casting on the side? I’d like to confirm what head it is. I’m going to put the 1g intake back in and look for a 1g coil pack bracket so I don’t have it bolted to the shock tower and I’ll figure out another mounting point for the map sensor.

It has a rough idle have to give it gas to keep it running if I rev it up it almost sounds like 2 step and when I let off the throttle it stays at 3k rpm and won’t go back down. It has spark on all 4 I tried unplugging the IAC and no change, stays running can’t remember if that means it’s bad. I’m going to look for my boost leak tester this week in storage to check for leaks. And when I do that I’m going to double check and make sure it’s timed correctly.

Only code it has is for rear O2 which I ordered yesterday from STM so I’ll keep at it and update with any changes but if there’s anything you guys thing I should check let me know thanks.

Did some searching and I think this is a 1g 7 bolt head g6/15. Could this cause any of my issues with the rough idle is there anyone on here that is running this head in a 2g that can give me any input if anything needs to be changed to run this head I’m going to keep searching and see what I can come up with.

The version of cylinder head should not impact your idle.

Test the ISC coils to make sure they are in spec. Remove it from the throttle body and inspect as you turn the key to ON position to see if it moves as it should. Boost leak test and fix all leaks. Make sure your throttle position sensor is adjusted properly.

I will test that as soon as I get the intake manifold put back on I’m cleaning and prepping it today painting it tomorrow.

The more I look at this I think someone might have put in a 1g 7bolt head and engine there is no number on the block by the bell housing and on the driver side of the block by the exhaust manifold it just says 4g63 no numbers below. It has a 1g style dip stick I now that is not a guarantee could have been swapped. But I also noticed the rear turbo coolant line doesn’t go the the block with a banjo bolt like 2gs instead it has a line going to the thermostat housing. Also the lower radiator hose fitment is kind of weird the hose is super lose to the shift linkage practically touching. So I'm just trying to make sure someone didn’t do a half ass job swapping the 1g 7 bolt. I know you’re supposed to swap pins at ECU for injectors and some wiring might need to be done for cam and gel sensor like wiring a 1g CAS but this one has the 97-99 style and when I got it the wires were cut at the plug so I sourced a new plug. Maybe that’s part of the reason it originally had ECMLink

The head appears to be a 1G, as does the thermostat housing.

Do you have the lower timing cover off that you can take pictures of the front case? Investigating in that area would tell you whether it is a 7-bolt or not.

Thanks for the input on it being a 1g head kind of feel like a jackass for the thread title now since it’s not a 2g head and makes sense why it had the 1g intake.

I don’t have the lower timing covers off at the moment. I do know it is a 7 bolt and not a 6 bolt from putting a clutch on it, just not sure if the block is a 7bolt 1g or 2g so you’re saying I could tell with the timing covers if it’s it’s a 1g 7bolt?

I asked, partially, to determine whether it was a 6 or 7-bolt. Since you know it is a 7-bolt, my curiosity is on the crank sensor and what was used there. And since you did the clutch, do you recall the shape of the block where the transmission mates? Refer to this.

I don’t remember I’ll try to get some pictures. I’m going to upload pictures the guy I bought it from sent me probably won’t belt but doesn’t hurt to try. Thank you for fixing the title.

From this photo, looks like a 2G block.

Either way, the fact it has a 2G CAS means no extra wiring, no pin swapping, etc. that would normally be performed in a 1G engine in a 2G swap. The matched 2Gb CAS with a ‘97 ECU means the control system knows nothing different about the setup than what came from the factory.

Fixed boost leaks, swapped the wire harness with another 97 wire harness that was in way better condition. Originally I was thinking that the ECU was from a 95 was because the only way the car will start is with the plug wires reversed but I checked the ECU and it’s a 97 even tried another good 97 ECU to rule out the ECU being the culprit and still same issue have to reverse the plug wires like if it was a 95/96 What do you guys think?

Somebody changed something in the harness or at the coil is my guess.

Won't start at all with the wires in the correct order but when reversed it will start but I have that weird idle, definitely got better after fixing the leaks. But now I want to fix why I have to reverse the firing order. All I can think of is CAS 180 out but I thought it wouldn’t start at all if it was installed wrong.

That why I swapped the harness to rule that out this harness that I put on is stock never been molested and I have also tried another 97 coil pack I have that is a known good one same with a ECU from a 97 and still only starts with plugs reversed

Wow now that's weird. Im at a loss honestly.

I’m looking through the manual to see if this is 180 out. Do the timing marks look ok to you? Painted cam gears was no me 😆 previous owner.

The CAS trigger wheel is wrong (180 degrees out) if the photos are with the engine at TDC / cam dowel pins at 12 o’clock.

Refer to: CAS install questions, need help
Yes engine at TDC, cam gear dowel pins are at 12 o’clock when picture was taken. I turned it 180 degrees so it’s in the correct position now. Still only will start with the plug wires reversed.

So, a recap…

2Gb ECU, harness, CAS. Won’t start without spark plug wires swapped for mismatched ECU and CAS - meaning spark plug wire order was 3-2-1-4 per the above diagram, to start.

Tried 2 ECUs. (1997 and black box 1998-1999)
Swapped harnesses (both 2Gb)
CAS was 180 out.

Removed and reinstalled CAS trigger wheel to correct orientation and the car still won’t start without the spark plug wiring order as 3-2-1-4?

That doesn’t make sense. Check the wiring at the coil pack to make sure the wires at the connector to the harness are going to the correct coils? That’s about all I’ve got. Even that seems implausible because the wires are different lengths and really only go to one spot. Not impossible, but unlikely.

Correct, even tried a third ECU from a 97. I’ll check the wiring at the coil pack today I have another coil pack I can try as well see if that makes a difference I’m pretty sure I already tried swapping the coil pack but I’ll try again just in case with another one from the car I got the harness from. Thanks
