Gainesville,
I don't think the squirters cause or prevent engine failure - I will illustrate it in several cases:
the 7 bolt motor i had in my 95 talon had 150,000 hard driven miles with a big16g and very minimal tuning. it was still running when i decided to park the car and put the 6 bolt in. It never had any symptoms of crankwalk at all and I expect upon teardown of the motor I won't find any evidence either.
The 6 bolt longblock I purchased from a friend to rebuild turned out to be in bad shape. 2 of the oil squirters were broken off. 1 was in the oil pan, 1 was completely missing. The 3rd one was bent in half blocking oil flow and the last one was very loose and aiming in the wrong direction completely. I'm not saying the squirters caused failure but they sure as hell were not doing their job of squirting oil on the pistons. The block also had several cracks in it.
I still needed to get a 6 bolt block but nobody wanted to sell me one for a decent price. I ended up getting an NT block for FREE since apparantly people don't value them at all. This block was in great shape - no cracks and very clean. I used it to build up my 6 bolt. My reasoning behind choosing the NT block was that it's still a 4g63 so everything on it is the same save for squirters. After doing reading on numerous sites like Magnus, and other engine builders I came to the conclusion that the squirters weren't an absolute neccessity.
I'm not saying any engine is better - 6 or 7 bolt, T or NT block. Everybody has a different experience with their own car and engine. It all comes down to how well you treat the car and probably a little luck of the draw.
