1gb front bumper modding project

thought i would post a build of my 1gb front bumper. Ive seen this done before and i like it enough to make one of my own. mine was busted at one of the seams so i figured it was a good candidate for the job.

i have it mocked up using strapping and decided to drop the lip down 1.5 inches.

were adding strips of fiberglass and when everything sets up we will remove the straps and start laying down the rest.

That's actually a really good idea. I've been wondering about ways to get more airflow through the stock bumper. Looking forward to the finished product.

Thats f'n smart. Will prob look better than any other decent aftermarket bumper. Any plans for the sides? rear? I think the bumper itself will be cool, but it might look weird with the rest of the car sitting higher. At least do the back too (rear diffuser?) and figure something out for side skirts...

I agree that this is a nice start. Can't wait to see this finished. I have a 3.5in intercooler on my 93 and it is def starved for airflow. I have thought of similiar ideas to modify my bumper, but I am going to wait and see how well yours turnsout first!

If the front turns out I would start thinking of ideas for the back and sides. I want to keep it clean and that may take time haha.

Hey thanks that's our shop track car 95 m3. We swaped a 2002 m3 engine with smg transmission. Pretty sure we are one of 3 that have working versions in the West. Has Dinan throttlebodys, dinan software.

Applying fiberglass is fairly easy, its like making paper mache.

Very nice custom work there. Hardest part is going to be a seamless fill and then making sure it never cracks

It's just a property of having two dissimilar materials. I love the idea. I did a lot of fiberglass mod to my 2Gb front clip. It'll always crack at the seams. Especially if you ever drift nose first into a snow bank like I did. But a way to make it not crack barring snow banks etc is do do a single layer of fiberglass over the entire thing. Fiberglass is very easy to work.

I am very interested in this, seems that a junkyard cover would be perfect for this, esp. if the idea is to wrap the whole cover to prevent cracking.

Small update. we had alot of work come in the shop today so i didn't have much time for the bumper. i did manage to move the 4 straps to the inside and cut the screws short to reinstall them without poking out the face of the bumper skin. i also used resin in and around the screw holes before attaching.

I also got sidetracked and made an air diverter for the cutout center. I want to keep the line across the mouth of the bumper but still provide air to the top part of the intercooler.

Then i only had time to add a couple strips of fiberglass to the center pillars before time ran out.
