I had issues with starter it would spin for few times and then start catching and cracking. When it cathes it would start right up. Yesterday i tried to start it and it would just whine quietly but wouldnt crank. I pulled my starter out today. I have no knowledge about it and i dont know how to test it. Im thinking to take it apart and clean it or is it not worth it? Pinion gear seems to spin pretty hard should it? It pulls out when spining other way but hardly too. Positive wire rubber is torn too so Im thinking maybe its shorting to starter itself?

Hit it with a hammer as it might be clogged up of dust, if not them the solenoid is toast and needs a new one to active

Most likely the issue if i hadn't torn it myself while removing the starter

How do you reconnect it? Can't remove the stuck piece

With things like this I believe in order to repair you need to disassemble the whole thing and rewire instead of repairing the wires. I believe it would be best to get a new one, similar with alternators. If you dont know how to rebuild it then just get a new one.

Just replace it, if it it’s not gone already. It will be when your in the most inconvenient place possible. I know ebay is taboo around here, but I have got two starters for really good deals, one for my f250..going on 3 years ($50) instead of $90-120, and u don’t have to send the core.

Edit: no coffee yet, I mean Amazon. Don’t use E-bay.

What needs to be connected to that small connector? Nothing was when i pulled it out

Any tips how to get that part onto rotor? Those 4 pieces are twice as long on the new part and i cant hold em all with my fingers to put it on rotor

I cant order anything off Internet because į need car running before christmas to get home. How to hold the brushes pls?

Extra set of hands would help. Can you use tape to hold the brushes back or are the springs really stiff? I can't recall what I did when I rebuilt my starter for my jeep but I was able to do it myself. It was a PIA though.

I put the commutator end on with the brushes, then slide the windings down onto the rotor and line it up with the bushing in the end, or that's how I always did old starters on other cars.

That's just a ground

The small tab on the side is the signal wire to activate the starter. Is that what you were asking?

It comes from the ignition switch via the clutch safety switch and starter relay on a manual or the selector and starter relay on an auto.
