I'm currently searching threads and websites plus the vfaq but its always the same
2g swap for a 6 bolt or incomplete threads.

I'm looking to swap a
95 gst 7 bolt head to a 93 tsi 6 bolt block

I really need some Info on the right way to go

Previous head had a few bent valves

And I had a 2g head laying around it tested all good valves are in great shape surface is good
Just took it to the shop getting it drilled for 12m headbolts

Here's my problem I've done a 2g 6 bolt swap but never a 1g to 2g headswap
So I'm a little confused I can't find the right thread or website on this.
What parts to use, intake, cams ,timing components, etc
I've got a 2g and 1g intake tb exhaust everythinig could need or use
Just don't have a good idea on what to use

This is the list I am thinking of using

2g head ,intake ,cams(with 1g gears)
2g tb inlet(1g tb)

1g 6 bolt block with 1g 6 bolt headgasket and studs
1g fuel rail with blue top injectors
1g timing components 1g water pump 1g powersteering
1g tb
1g blacktop cas
1g thermostat housing

Is there anything I am missing or could(should add)

What problems would I run into like the random misfire I've heard about???
A link to an original thread would be nice as I. Can't find one that's complete with parts lost etc

12 mm is not large enough for the 1g/6 bolt head studs.

You need to go 13mm/.500

You will want to run the intake that matches the intake runner cross section.

Cams (for the most part) and cam gears can be interchanged from 6 bolt/7 bolt

head gasket is the same for 6 bolt and 7 bolt

Yes, a 6 bolt head stud will slip right through a 7 bolt head bolt hole.

Funny how that went through the head bolt hole, when a 7 bolt head stud is 11mm

So there must have been some clearance there to start.

7 bolt heads have a 12mm bolt hole.

so, by applying a tad bit of logic, a 6 bolt head should have a 13mm

Do not believe me? Grab a half inch drill bit and see how passes through the head bolt holes in the 6 bolt head.

Couple things you need to keep in mind.

1) machining tolerances, there is a +/- of some amount

2) core shift, the actual casting has moved and grown and shrunk since it was cast at the foundry, machined and installed

Cams always have some affect on how the engine runs.

But as far as setting the timing up for what you are doing. No, figure what cams are larger from the 6 bolt or 7 bolt and run them.

Since the timing parts are block specific, run the timing belt set up for the block.

Oh, this I am not sure of, but you may need the 7 bolt thermostat housing to match the head.

I do know the mounting pads on the back of the head are different between the 6 bolt and 7 bolt heads

Not trying to thread jack but what are these mounting pads you speak of and btw great info

I was confused for a minute, too. Dale's referring to the mounting pads for the thermostat housing. Damn my FWD thinking that the back of the head is the firewall side... :ohdamn:

When it comes to thermostat housings -- as with so many other things on these cars -- they are 1G and 2G specific, not 6-bolt and 7-bolt. You will more than likely want to run a 1G thermostat housing. It will match your (1G) water pipe, (1G) lower radiator hose, and provide you with the accessory cooling feed ports you can use, if desired, for the turbo and oil cooler.

The 2G head has both a 1G and 2G bolt pattern for the thermostat housing. A 1G head only has the 1G bolt pattern. Thus, you can use a 1G thermostat housing on a 2G head but you cannot bolt on a 2G thermostat housing to a 1G head. You will need to find some bolts for the 1G housing on the 1G head or purchase the 1G studs, nuts, and washers to bolt the housing on. Nothing major.

Good info, thanks a bunch I couldn't find half of what I just got
To many threads with guys simply saying search search search LOL

Well mainly they come up for 2g swaps, not much info for 1g guys
I'm certainly glad you said that about the t-housing too! And especially for the 13mm info!

I know this will deceased the size of my intake ports but with the 2g manifold
I'll certainly see a little torque now :thumb:

Yeah, I have 90's block w/ 2g head, and I did't have to bore out my head to fit the studs. Not sure if I got lucky or what.

That's weird I could fit my bolts in but it'd be a definite tight fit they would not sit right, wouldn't that cause you gasket issues!

The whole reason I've read most to cut it was for oiling issues?
