Hi all,

Putting together a 1G 7-Bolt and I'm finding conflicting information. This engine didn't come with all the parts and I need to source a few and all the parts I'm looking for are discontinued.

One of the parts is the oil filter housing. My question is, what are my options for an OFH other than the obvious exact one that came on a 1G 7-Bolt? Will a 2G 7-bolt work? Anything else?Gasket part numbers are the same so I would assume so for a 2G.

This engine also has no lower timing cover which would obviously be nice to have? Am I stuck sourcing only a 1G 7-bolt cover or will something Evo or even Hyundai work?

Last part, which I'm sure the exact 7-bolt 1G is required is the lower rear metal bracket the lower timing cover bolts to, shown in the picture attached. Only choice right?

Thanks!

I know the 1g and 2g 7 bolt housings have different part numbers but I *think* they are interchangeable.

I know the Evo 9 housing will fit on a 2g but not sure on a 1g. Pretty much every model is discontinued these days.

Jafro did a great comparison video between all the different housings.

Any 7-bolt OFH will bolt up. 1G non-turbo, 1G turbo, forward facing, Evo 3, Evo 8-9, 2.4L Spyder, 2G turbo are all common to see.

I’m not sure about the Hyundai timing covers for 7-bolts. I know it was verified for 6-bolts but not sure anyone actually posted proof that it worked for the 7-bolt. It would make sense, but I can’t say with any amount of certainty. If they were, you might check availability at this point as I’m pretty sure even the 6-bolt Hyundai covers are no longer available or very scarce.

For the metal plate, the Plymouth/Eagle catalogue shows the same part number from 1990-1993 and a different part number for 1994 models. This would lend itself to say that any differences wouldn’t be 6- and 7-bolt related. I can double check to see if those dates correlate with ASA tomorrow.

Your options would be any 7 bolt OFH, such as 1g 7 bolt, 2g, EVO 1~9, RVRs etc.

As for the covers, it would depend what car you have 1g or 2g.
The 6 bolt timing cover and the 1G 7 bolt cover is almost the same. One obvious difference is the 1G 7 bolt cover has one more mounting bolt behind the crank pulley. But if your car is 2g, at least you have to modify/trim the 1g one piece cover since the engine mount is different between 1g and 2g.

If your car has a 2G 7 bolt, EVO 1-3 covers can be used but not the EVO 4+ covers.

I don't remember very well so I could be wrong but I think you can use the 6 bolt one if your cover is the 6 bolt or 1g 7 bolt.

For the OFH, a 2G 7-bolt should fit since the gaskets are the same, but it's always best to verify compatibility with your specific setup. As for the lower timing cover, options from the Evo series may work, but finding one that fits well is key.

Thanks everyone for the help and replies!

The car is a 1GB. I have a 6-bolt engine on the side I had pulled as many parts as I could from. These plates, all four of them, I had taken, refinished and painted. When I compared using an online Mitsubishi parts site, the top plates (cam gear cover) and bottom front lower plate had the same part numbers between the 1G 6-bolt and the 7-Bolt. This rear one was a different part number… If I end up finding a lower cover I will try it with the 6-bolt plate and see if it works.

So you’re curious if the 6-bolt and 7-bolt covers have bolt holes in the same position to use that rear backing plate?

7-bolt on top vs 6-bolt on bottom, each picture just recentering the camera over each of those bolt holes to show comparative positions. The covers were not moved between pictures.

Thanks for that.

Am I correct in saying that the bolt holes look like they line up? It’s a little tough to see in the pics.

Yeah. That’s what that was attempting to show. :p

So unless the metal plate bolts to the block differently, it should work with either timing cover - i.e, should not be 6- or 7-bolt specific.

Great thanks.

I’ll update this thread once I try it out so others can know.
