16g turbo upgrade

I just bought a 16g turbo from a coo worker, it has no shaft play and works good i have a stock gsx with some small things, 1g bov(not installed yet) turbo timer, boost gauge. what else do i need to complete my install? I was looking at a 2g install kit on turbochargers.com what do i need exactly? Will all my stock pipes and filter box still fit? Im not looking to make super power and id like to keep it at a low boost level like 12psi maybe 15max. Can i keep my stock fuel system? What about intercooler? Also do i really need all those items in the 2g install kit to make it work? Or could i just upgrade the oil lines and water lines and gaskets? Any help is verry much appreshiated. Thanks
 
I'm sure others will chime in here, but you need the compressor outlet adapter pipe. The 16g compressor exit is oriented differently from the stock T25, so this pipe replaces the stock LICP to get from the turbo compressor to the SMIC. You can run the 16g at 12psi without any other mods, but I'm not sure what gain you'll see.

You should check to see if the 16g was ported. If so, you'll need a matching exhaust manifold (you can do it yourself or send your stock 2g mani somewhere and have it ported or have it traded in for a ported 2g mani - I know that ExtremePSI will do that for you).
 
Is that tube included in the 2g install kit? If not where can i purchase one from? Also anyone know what gains ill get from running 12-15 psi?
 
if I were you...I would just buy the install kit. It sounds like your pretty new at this stuff (please take no offense). The install kit would make things a hell of a lot easier.

12-15psimax ummmm don't make me blush...you'll definetly want a little more than that when you get the "hunger" for more power. So i HIGHLY recommend at least a 190 walbro and I think you can get away with some 550's.
 
I have a 16G on mine. Definately get the following:

S-AFC-II Fuel Computer (or something better but alteast that)
550cc Injectors
190LPH Fuel Pump

If you have the opportunity upgrade the wastegate flapper, that will help alot with boost creep. The 16Gs are notorious. http://www.slowboyracing.com/more.php?id=108&

If you have just the turbo you definately should get the install kit, it will come with everything you need to hook it up the right way.

And yeah running the 16G without supporting mods is just pointless. You might as well run your stock turbo. because you'll make the same power running a 16G at low psi. I would only get the 16G installed if you're wanting to run more power. Unless of course there's something wrong with your factory turbo and this is a cheap replacement or you're doing a stage by stage upgrade.
 
How much pounds an hr does those injectors do? Ive always been into the muscle car scene so this is new to me. Im used the the 19lb 21lb 32lb 42lb injectors. What makes these injectors different? Im just assuming you can use a set up injectors from another car can you? On my other car i just took some injectors from a cobra mustang and it worked fine with mine.
 
pay a little bit more to buy an install kit from someone else and then you wont have to replace all the parts, so far on the turbochargers.com kit ive had to remake the oil return line and replace 2 of the fittings for being garbage. Also customer support isnt that good i called him to ask about getting a different fitting and he told me 30 bucks, I called Earls of Indy and they sent me the same fitting for 4 bucks. I would go with the slowboy kit
 
I agree with what everyone here is saying, but keep in mind that you don't need to do anything but install the turbo with the install kit and maybe port your exhaust manifold (if the 16g is ported). All the rest can wait. It's up to your time and budget at this point.

However, I do think that you should consider what you ultimately want to bolt up to your 16g (mani, O2 housing/dp/exhaust, and FMIC). You may want to start off with a good port job of the 16g turbine housing, wastegate, go with the larger flapper, and port your 2g mani to match (7cm gasket match). Otherwise, you get to take it all apart later to do this. The install kit for the 16g is going to be for the stock sidemount intercooler, so if you have immediate plans for an FMIC, you'll be throwing that pipe away.

Others will have to answer that question, but if your 16g is ported, the kit ain't gonna help the crappy flow out of your mani. Does the turbine inlet look something like this (notice the step where it reduces diameter) or something like this (notice how much larger it is, and that the step is gone)? If it looks like the first picture, it's not been ported and should bolt up to your stock 2g manifold. Otherwise, you need to either port your 2g mani or get one with the correct collector outlet diameter.

no not really. You would have to reuse alot of gaskets and reuse the oil return line which isnt much fun and ss autochrome has a reputation as an ebay seller that loves to make parts that dont fit.

these are all kits that will work some are better than others. Your best bet is to goto vfaq.com and read through the install back and forth and what ever parts you think you can make or reuse are up to you ( i reused the water lines but had all new gaskets and bolts). Trust me dont cheap out on the install parts of you do you are gonna spend the months after the install fixing leaking fittings, lines, and gaskets.
 
i got my 16g very cheap, its a little out of spec in the shaft play so i am going to rebuilt it prior to installation. looking for a used SAFC in a little while, my rx7-age has lead me to have more side-feed injectors of high flowing volume i dont even know what to do with myself ( i think i have like 16 550s, 12 460s, a few 650s, and two 950s...LOL).
 
The way our engine and fuel rail is set up will not allow for side-feed injectors without a good degree of messing with how everything is oriented.
 
Ok yesterday i bought the turbochargers 2g install kit and i cant wait for it to show up, one thing is will the stock bov work fine with this setup? And i have a 1g bov with the small pipe connected to it, is there any way to get it to fit the stock pipes? Is there somewhere i can buy just the pipe from the intercooler to the tb with that flang on it? Thanks

Here's a good exercise that will take you maybe an hour and get you a bit more oriented with your car (forgive me if you've already done all of this):

1) Take your air filter box off of your car: Disengage the clips, pull the top half off, remove the filter, and unscrew the 3 bolts at the bottom. Disconnect it from the MAS (the box that all that clean, filtered air goes into).
2) Disconnect the 3 bolts that hold the fusebox (which is just rearward of the filter box you just removed) down (one on the driver's side, 2 bolts on the fender on the passenger side).
3) Shove the fuesbox away so that you can see the stock, plastic, piece of crap, restrictive upper intercooler pipe (UICP) that runs under the airbox and fusebox.

That UICP and that filter are the first things most people replace. If you look at that stock UICP, it is VERY restrictive. If you decide to replace your UICP with a steel one, just about every vendor out there will weld different style BOV flanges onto it. So if you are going this route, just keep that 1g BOV handy and order the UICP with a 1g BOV flange.

Keep in mind that most of these aftermarket UICPs will not fit under your stock airbox. That's part of the reason the stock UICP is so twisted and restrictive. But you probably want to replace that as well (maybe a K&N FIPK gen 2).

Replacing the plastic UICP section and the airbox/filter frees up the air flowing into your motor.

Sure, you can get a 1g BOV flange adapter, but if you intend to move up to a new UICP, you might want to wait and save however much it costs you for this adapter, because you won't need it when you get a new UICP.

By the way, the 1g BOV is perfectly adequate for 2g applications with fairly high power goals, and it can be fairly easily modified to push it beyond its stock limitations (by "crushing" it - literally). You can save a whole lot of money and get the same effect with a 1g BOV. It is dirt cheap and works very well. There are much more expensive models that don't buy you anything but looks (maybe that's important to you - fine, it's your car). You could save your money for a K&N FIPK and an UICP instead.

Thanks for all that info i did actually take all that appart to take a look, the pipe is verry restrictive, As for adding a k&n i wanted to do that but i dont want to have the intake in the hot engine bay. Ive seen people make a custom box to fit, Is there any kit i can buy that allready is setup for this?

I'm not sure if you can buy cold air intake boxes, but if you do a search on "cold air intake" on this site, you can see what's involved in making your own.
 
I seached but couldnt find an answer to this, Im going to buy a k&n airfilter to fit the car what size do i need? Also is there a air filter that will directly bolt up to the maf with no modifications?

This is what I (and many others) have. It bolts right up to your stock MAS (not MAF) and uses one of the stock filter box bolt holes. 100% bolt-on. Comes with step-by-step install instructions. I've pulled mine off and back on so many times, it takes about a minute for me. You'd have to build the cold-air intake around this. Read through the intake tech articles for a title like "DIY cold air intake". There are a couple.

Ok thanks thats what i was looking for. Is it really $150 for it? Ill just have to look arround. Thanks

Also, you can do an ebay search on "DSM K&N FIPK" (FIPK means Fuel Injection Performance Kit, by the way). The ExtremePSI price of $125 didn't look bad, and have a pretty good reputation around here. I got mine off of ebay, but I forget the vendor.
