Hello all, well, it looks like I'm in need of a turbo, the oil seals in mine seem to be going out. :banghead: So I want to go cheap and gain a little horsepower whilst I am at it.

What I was planning on is getting an eBay 16G EVO III turbocharger, but use it with my stock fuel system. I have read that I can do this if I tune the boost down to 12psi or a little under. And although I have heard some horror stories about this, I think it should be fine if I don't push the turbo to its "limits".

My main question is does this sound like an okay way to go? And exactly what would I need to do to run it on my stock set up? Just adjust the waste gate to hold 11-12 psi?

And just so you know, I did search and found A LOT of useful threads... just none of which answers the question of if it was a good idea.:idontknow:

eBay turbos are risky. If you are concerned about reliability you may be better off rebuilding your old turbo.

From what I have read on these and other forums the eBay turbos tend to fail regardless of how much boost is put through them.

I have a 16g with stock ecu and stock internals and it runs great i have it at 10 pounds with a bigger intercooler with 2.5 piping the turbo can hold up to 380 torque

whats done to your car right now?

but my 16g is not ebay so never mind, didnt see that part sorry

GEt a real one the mods for it, then your golden, go cheap now and then have problems later and have do it again, again ebay turbos a long thread here about the donts. Just about everyone will tell you that, a few will have used it and have some luck but why even take the chancel, plus there out there, i got one rebuilt, for a great price.

dont get a ebay one they do fail i bought a t3/t4 and the turbo was starting to go out after two week. like the old saying goes you pay for what you get and in this case it is true just save your money and get a real one

yeah i have ebay 16g.. it lasted a whole summer. on 15 pounds of boost. if i could go back in time i would have not bought i though.. your wastegate will not work at first.. you must play with it alot and adjust the arm before u install it. and yes it still works... for how long i do not know...also it had shaft play when i received it brand new

I really would love to get a real one, but the cost is the issue. The one from forced performance is $499 while the one I'm looking at is $215 if some one could point me into a direction I could get a new turbo that would increase my performance for the $200 price range, I'm all ears. I mean I would rather not have to replace anything, who knows, maybe I can get away with running it how it is. what its doing is when I go WOT and go in to the higher RPM range (4500-5000rpms) it starts smoking a moderate amount, and then when I shift to the next gear, it blows out a good size puff of smoke. but when I bring the RPMs high with the boost barely kicking on, or use full boost but shift before 4000, it does not smoke at all. also, there is no shaft play at all. Does this sound like it is going to die soon? And for reference, the color of the smoke is greyish-blue. Any thoughts?

Save yourself some money, and help another dsmer out. You have a lack of knowledge and experience, i think the first step for you will be going to a 14b.

You can pick up a used but in good shape one off the classifieds here for a like $100.

I bought 2 and paid $75 each.

Honestly if you can't afford a real Evo III 16g save the money and buy a 14b until you can really upgrade the car :thumb: Just make sure everything is up to date before you start throwing mods at it..... You will be happy you saved your money I love my Evo III 16g

:hellyeah:Thank you guys so much for the responses, I really appreciate it! so 14b it is, what exactly do I need to make this work for my car? I know I need a J pipe, and a 1st gen BOV, will it bolt on with my stock oil feed lines? or will I have to get ones from a 1G as well? And will it add a noticeable increase in power? I was hoping to at least gain 10-15hp from it.

where do you guys find these turbos for so cheap? I just checked the classifieds and i did not come back with anything. I am all for it if I can get one for a good price.

Are you a member of any other forums. I occasionally see them for cheap on talk and on the link forum. Just drive it how it is until you find one for a good price. It would probably be a good idea to clean out all the intercooler piping when you get a new turbo since yours are probably coated with oil.

The oil feed is different on a 14b from 2g. You can modify a 2g oil return, and both water lines with slight mods to use with a 14b. You can also use the stock 2g lower ic piping if you turn it upside down with a short j pipe. I had the money problem as you did before I got my evo 3 16g. The 14b is worth it imo because it just makes it that much easier when you are ready for the evo 3. Depending on where you take it apart I recommend buying the stainless ex manifold studs to make sure you dont break any along the way. 28 dollars if I remember correct for those.

Unless you port the wastegate flapper your going to creep which will take it from cheap hp to expensive. Tuning Device+ injectors + Fuelpump + AFPR >$ porting wastegate flapper.

The porting doesnt matter unless you have boost creep issues, which is caused from a 3" exhaust upgrade. However the porting is nice have done for when you do a 3" exhaust. Porting the WG flapper isnt the only important part, it is just as important to port the o2 housing.

Ebay is trash. You can find used, but still in perfect working order mhi 16g's for $300 or so. Sometimes less. Ran on 7psi you won't blow anything up. A 14b is an upgrade from the t-25, and is cheaper than a 16g. Keep your boost levels low and you'll be good.

Not necessarily. In the case of the eBay 16G, porting is pretty much mandatory. If you don't port the wastegate hole prior to installing the turbo you're going to have boost creep issues no matter what. There's a 34mm flapper covering a 22mm hole on those beasts....so unless you have an o2 housing that vents to the atmosphere, you're up shit creek without a paddle.
