I was wondering about odometer rollbacks when I was looking for a car..but that was because the car I wanted had like 85,100 miles on it..& the loan I got said the car had to have less than 85k miles on it..never went through with it though.

Its extremely easy. If you dont know how to do it, you shouldnt pick up a wrench. However its dumb, and I'd be really pissed if someone did that to a car I bought. Its that thing called class that alot of us seem to be losing these days.

Hrmph. I've done it on other cars, but when I got another cluster off eBay and wanted to get the numbers close to the one in my car, I couldn't figure out how to do it on a DSM odo.

Actually what is missing is honestly and integrity in people that roll back the odometer just to make more money on a sale.

Actually honestly and integrity = class. ROFL

While were on this topic, the dealer reported my milage when I had it in for an inspection. Since i'm in Canada, they reported it in kilometres therefore Carfax now says I rolled back my odo. hahaha Show how accurate Carfax is. :notgood: My odo says 93000 MILES and Carfax said it has something like 53000.

Thanks a lot guys... I'll go ahead and carfax it and see what comes up. How many other cars did you do it on, Defiant OMG :toobad:

I had a similar problem with my carfax. A form discrepancy from the previous owner registering the vehicle gave my car a flagged odometer as questionable, though the history shows a clear linear progression from every owner. I have it at 64k miles now.

make sure when you do it use autocheck.com NOT carfax.com autocheck is better for my car autocheck has 12 and carfax 9...

I bought 3 guage clusters and they all have various miles on them. On has 121,000, one is 135,000, and 190,000. I didnt find out why the rpm guage did not work, but I'm just going to hope it works when I put my motor back in. I kept buying the clusters, so i guess the cluster isnt the problem. anyway, is it possible to set the millage back on a guage cluster? I know the cover comes off and the cluster comes apart. I want to set my cluster to 0 miles since I am rebuilding my motor and the clusters do not show my millage anyway. my actual millage is 135,000 according to the title.

Thats why Im keeping this on the down low.:shhh:. but these are just clusters. I bought 3 of them. I dont want my car to show about 200,000 miles on it when it only has 134,000. I wonder if it is legal to an extent. I wouldnt mind just setting it back to the mileage my car actually has. I think the 200,000 mile guage cluster is the only one that works. the 121,000 guage cluster worked but the rpm guage worked every other time. I just wanted to experiment a little bit.:p.

Yes, it is possible. Yes, it is illegal. It's pretty easy to figure out how to do it once you crack open the cluster.

cool. I will experiment and if on cluster breaks Ill try another one, hopefully all of them work. If I open the cluster up would I be able to see a problem if the gauge cluster is bad. Maybe something burned up idk. Electrical things just blow my mind sometimes. A shorted out a starter, it would not work anymore, 6 months later it works. Maybe my gauge clusters are the same way.

Its easy. There a little pin you need to push up before you can spin the dials. I did the same thing your thinking of doing. I kept my original and spun a spare all the way to 0 when I rebuilt my motor so I know how many mile I put on it.

Cool. I'm going to see what I can do. Has anyone heard of someone actually going to jail for this. I don't think it should be considered a crime if I never sell my car. Or at least if I change the mileage back to what it is suppose to be. And the cluster would truly read the mileage of my engine.

its serious jail time, its fraud, idk but on ma titles, on the back, when u put the mileage the current car has when u buy it from the current owner, theres a box you can check, that says this might not be the correct mileage, so you can do it like that, but then ## car has to get inspected by the state police to get a sticker, so might as well dont tell anyone u ever did it, even ## wife

yea. well I have 3 clusters. I do live in a very rural area, and inspectors around here don't look for the mileage. I am still a minor and don't want to go to jail so I may just set it to where it should be. Ill ask around, I guess, because Idk if anyone on here would truly knows if it is ok for personal use to change the cluster's numbers. I realize if I get pulled over then a police officer may get a glimpse of my mileage. The cop at my school doesnt like me either, so I just know that I have been warned. And remember, I do have 3 gauge clusters. I can put one in to show my actual mileage for an inspection or something.

Bingo, its fraud and when you go to get your car checked for inspection, you must write down how many miles your car has for state renewal, most places check to verify you wrote down a number that correlates to when it gets inspected. Plus, you roll up in a 20 year old car with 200 miles on it, dont you think it will just a little suspicious. Just a little suspicious?

Or you could just make a little note on your computer that says "Engine installed at XXX,XXX miles" and then every time you drive it, go and make a note or something indicating how many miles you put on. You could even get fancy and make it in Excel and do all sorts of calculations. :p

And do your inspection person really not look at the odometer?? That doesn't seem right.
