First attempt, want something simple for learning.

So far I learned:
.045 GAP and a bevel to get 100% penetration.

Fitment must be lose, because after a few tacks it will shrink.

Mild steel on the next one to keep flanges from warping.

So I'll get to welding this thing up maybe Sunday night. Haven't touched it lately though.

Yes always use mild steel flangees (bond with 316 filler) it will keep the studs from ripping out of the head also. And 316 is a good mild to stainless bonder(better than 309 imo) and helps give the joint more nickel and molybdenum. :) 316 is awesome it provides greater Corrosion resistance in the joint as well When joining austinetic stainless to low carbon steels.

And I don't have a jig for a collector yet. And no time to build one.

I would probably use 309L. It's great for mild to stainless. Don't know much about 316L yet.

Started welding this up today.
Used a second tank to backpurge at 5cfh.

I felt i had to rush because I didn't want to waste my gas. Well, 10-15minutes in I was down almost 400psi in my tank :( WTF

Chopped up a set of handlebars and built a sweet 7/8" exhaust system with them.

Added a motor, a fuel system, and some paint, and whalaa, a super-sweet pit bike.

I plan to redo the fuel tank to make it a bit more low profile. I'll have to fab something from scratch though.

I'm always working on something, man. More recently, some unique stuff. Aside from the usual crossmembers and subframes, I also recently did a race exhaust for a Daytona 675 and I'm halfway finished with a topmount header for a buddy's 1G.

So i went ahead and rented a 330cf tank, about 78 to fill, compared to 47 for my 80cfh.
its 10$ month for rent.

I'm going to apply for an ENTRY level tig/fab position at a local place this week and they require a weld test. I havent welded in a few weeks due to an empty argon bottle, and not wanted to fill it seeings as i was getting the 330.

So i went for a little practice on whatever i had laying around
