Winter Driving? [Merged 12-6]

Ok after reading tons of posts about winter beaters and the such i am have come to a question. Is it bad to run your car in the winter? And if so why?

Even though I have AWD, I always am worried that the car will leave me stranded.

My NT is my only car so I don't have much of a choice.

But when I do get a 2nd car, I don't care what season it is, I will be using the other car more often....kinda make the Eclipse the "weekend" car that's secured away in a garage somewhere.

I just switched from fwd to awd, and I'm definatley driving it all year. Sometimes I'm not sure if I'm driving through snow or salt up here though. You guys that put away your awd's are missing half the fun though, these cars are built for snow! (That and I'm too poor to get a second car)

the more i read...the more im convinced i will drive it all winter. I toke it out in the first snow we had a few days ago before they salted every thing...i ahd so much fun sliding around and spinning all 4. i went to an empty parking lot and got the real feel of what she could do in the snow. i think i will drive it all winter..besides through the really really harse stuff.

I just recently did a fresh undercoat at work for this winter and i think..im ganna add another coat to make sure i get full protection from the salt monsters.

When my car is actully running during the winter months I drive it, but other than that it only sees the roads dry, or with only a few inches of snow for fun. Winter is why man invented 4wd trucks (man I hate driving that thing).

yokohama avid v4s's have been on for the weekend, and let me tell you, these things ROCK.

great snow traction from what i had and handle amazing on dry pavement. excellent tire, espically for 445 bucks. WITH 100% road hazard replacement.

still have my Kumho Ecsta 711s on 17s, they suck so bad in snow, especially last winter and now 60% tread is gone...

I figure an awd car with halfway decent tires is the best thing to drive in the snow ... so why not? And donuts and drifting is fun too.

The only reason I won't drive mine much is because I don't like the salt on the roads... even though there doesn't seem to be enough snow on the roads around here to warrant salt, I'd rather not take the chance. Coming from California, I want to keep my car looking like it never set a tire in the snow 10 years from now. We drive my wife's Audi A6 (turbo/AWD) when the weather looks bad.

And my tires are far from decent snow tires... and I don't plan to buy snow tires for my car - if anything I'll be buying some race tires for the track. I should take those out in the snow! That would be fun!

I did alittle bit of that It snowed so I took my car out for alittle bit, the studs did very well and had pretty decent traction while on low throttle.

My new tires absolutely suck in the snow, I thought it wouldn't be bad with street tires because I still had AWD but I was wrong. I get out and look at the tires after I drive and the tread is just caked with snow, they don't clean themselves at all. I can put it sideways back and forth at like 2 mph with no throttle just turning the wheel, haha I feel like those badass Japanese drifters.

i here you...i thank my baby for chuggin along after each day of cold wind, brutal salt, and sand. It starts for me every time never gives me any bull. i love my DSM, i just hope it stays this way till spring.

I just drove it in snow for the first time, and I feel so good about it its hard to explain. It was just great.

Looking at tirerack, the BFGoodrich Traction T/A have a higher combined road and track rating than the Yokos you have, but the Yokos are better in the snow according to the comparison chart. If I had the money I would have gone with the Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S which get a higher deep snow rating and the best overall rating in the chart but they are much more expensive.

Upon further examination the Avid m5550 a/s are not only in the ultra high performance section, they are much better on the snow and ice then the G-Force KDWS I currently have and they are 20 bucks less expensive! In fact they even get better ratings than those Yokos and are about the same price...

I just called Big-O tires and they told me they can get me anything I want from tirerack for a little more money but it includes free mount balance for life and a 4 wheel alignment! How awesome it that?

Oh, as far as the Perrelis, just looks like they are overpriced and not as good as the Avid anyways.

I'll be driving mine all winter once I get it back, only because I have nothing else to drive. Right now, I'm crusing in a 97 Chrysler Town and Country, it sucks. AWD is meant for traction and snow. I plan on posting a video soon of my car... mini compilation so to say, and there will be AWD donuts on there Along with launches, fun times cruising.. etc...

Its a car drive it. i sold mine but i do drive my current car (96 Trans Am) in the snow and whatever other weather u can throw at it. If a RWD car can be driven in the snow so can FWD and AWD.

I agree. I daily drive a MKII MR2 in the winter. Only issue is ground clearance. I've got 5.5" true ground clearance. If the snow is over 6" deep, the drive wheels tend to end up NOT touching the ground... The best tires in the world aren't of much use at that point... As long as they're touching the ground, my Michelin Arctic-Alpin's handle it great. Scary good on ice and decent in snow too...
