Ok after reading tons of posts about winter beaters and the such i am have come to a question. Is it bad to run your car in the winter? And if so why?

I can say I really don't enjoy commuting in my car in the winter. It handles like trash (probably because I run my BFG G-Forces all year ) and I hate driving with the windows up, its loud and smelly. But snow-x events and storms when no one else is on the road....

How many of you Drive your DSM's in the winter?

I've never had to since, well, I live in southern CA where we have no real white winters. But I see you're running a spyder too, have you run your DSM in the snow? I'm looking to move to Washington DC for a couple years next fall and am debating bringing my car or getting a beater to drive while I'm there. How has your car been doing with the snow?

Driving in the winter so fun with the AWD you never get stuck and it handles great. I cleaned my ar every week at my local car wash and just dried it inside. You also want to clean the underbody so you don't get any rust. Other then that i wouldn't like to drive my car in the winter but its my daily driver so w.e I hate winter and I can't wait till i move down south and have summer all yearrrrrrrrr. My rims aren't chrome there black with polished lip and nexen n3000 all season tires you guys think i should drive this in the winter?

I think you should drive anything that isnt rear wheel drive in the winter.

Forget snow. Ever driven a Saab 9-5 in the rain? It goes something like,

1st gear... no power... no power... SPINNNNNN REV LIMITER, 2nd gear.. bog... no power... no power.. still no power... BAM REV LIMTER.... 3rd gear.. huge bog... no power... no power... no power.. SPINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN... TRACTION!!!

Congratulations, you just gently accelerated 0-40mph in 30 seconds. Keep in mind this is with just enough throttle to accelerate the car. And no I'm not exaggerating at all.

Not a 9-5, but an 88 900 Turbo. And yea, Saabs NEED snow tires. I like Nokians

i like awd in the snow..."burnouts" leave you with so much more tread on your tires when your done. Plus tracks to see where you've been.

Ive got a 94 Nissan King Cab for the winter. Its icronic really, my car is amazing in the snow, and my truck sucks the nut. Besides, the first drive in the spring is like christmas

I put one winter on my car and it is never seeing one again. Way too much salt on the roads around here.

I do it. All I can say is that being FWD, you just have to keep your acceleration controlled. Once the turbo spools you lose control of the front wheels. But its not too bad as long as you use common sense.

well I'm FWD, and I drove my TSi in the winter once... Here in Wisconsin we get some pretty nasty heavy, wet, lake effect snow. I have stock suspension, and my car acts like a snow plow b/c its so low. Also, I tried going up a hill near my home one night, with maybe a 3 or 4% grade, and I could barely make it up. Often I would have to start my car from a stop in 2nd gear. And even then I would still spin the tires. SHITTY! If I started in 1st, I would start to roll... REAL slow, and I would slowly gain some speed, but the second I hit 1-2 pounds of boost, it would be all over. Snow would fly, wheels would spin. Then I would have to try starting all over again from a stop... No good... The next winter I said fck it and I bout a 700 dollar geo storm with barely enough power to spin the wheels at full throttle on ice

You think i should drive with the rims and tires on? The tread on these tires look awesome and i don't feel like wasting money on winter tires.... By the way winters here and not that bad lately i guess because of the global warming but yea they get pretty harsh sometimes.

No salt out here, but yes to the winter. "No chains" is most of why I was interested in a DSM to begin with.

Personally , i d advise you to go find some used 15'... or maybe even all season tires on steelies.., it does the job pretty well...
but 18s on summer tires.....if it get s really harsh, that s almost asking for troubles
