So as many of you know, I recently had my car keyed up real nasty and I took it back to flat black again you can see the thread and pics here.

Now, here's my question, Why is flat black hated on so much? It doesn't make sense to me why it would be "cool" if it was on an old mustang or muscle car but GOD FORBID somebody flat black an import. Why so much angst over something so trivial? :toobad: Iv'e been getting alot of slack for it, not here on the forums, you guys have been more than helpful and empitehetic. But more in general. Maybe it has to do with the whole "Honda ricer craze" or something. Maybe yall can shed some light here. :hellyeah:

ROCK ON FELLOW TUNERS :rocks:

haha ya know who really knows, guess everyones jus picturing an old american muscle nobody ever took the time to gloss or clearcoat the paint and left it just flat black and it jus stuck with them LOL idk i like flat black honestly thats jus me though, although my eclipse is gloss black, but still more power to you man rock the flat black!!! :D

My Talon is flat black. It needed a lot of body work and the flat black paint was very cheap and easy to spray so I went all flat. Once the summer comes back around I'm doing the lips on the bumpers and my factory ground effects in gloss black.

I think a lot of it has to do with people doing it poorly. I painted my old CBR matte black aftter fixing some mild body work, and all I got was compliments.

That actualy sounds pretty sweet! Flat black 1st gen FTW! :hellyeah:

I think you'r right! Can we blame this one on the Honda boys and they're crappy rattle can jobs? ROFL The sad part is it doesn't take that much more to rattle can it the right way and have it come out decent, hell it only took the wife and me 2 hours.

Flat black should propbly be in hondas paint code. Thats all i see hatches painted.

My top 10 reasons your car got keyed:

10) they're jealous that they don't have what you do

9) they dislike your choice of vehicle, or the condition you keep in in

8) their still simmering road rage was previously focused on you, whether deserved or not

7) they dislike your parking effort

6) they saw you exit your vehicle and disliked your clothing or ethnicity

5) they know and dislike you personally or someone they saw as a passenger in your vehicle

4) they misidentified you as someone they know and dislike

3) they see you as their competition

2) they failed to steal your car or something in it

1) they saw their girl getting out of your passenger side.

flat black primer isnt hated on. Flat black spray paint is. dont waste money on spray paint just get a gun, compressor and 2 quarts of primer. do it right or dont do it at all. just my honest opinion.

I love flat black cars when done right, theres alot of people who do it wrong, I judge basically if I see a ton of streaks, a few here and there are okay. I think the world of ricer not just hondas ruined what flat black used to mean. seeing a flat black 60s camaro or chevelle was the ubber shisnit, now seeing 10 hatches that are an array of flat colors, sitting next to a flat black 96 mazda 626, and a flat black 80s station wagon is just pathetic. I'm at work so I can't view any of your pictures of your car but I'm more then sure a flat black dsm is still sexy, and from the sound of it you did it right though with the few extra cans.

I think we'll go with number 6 since F%^K YOU PIG, is usualy assosciated with some sort of person in uniform. Im guessing their not a fan of the security company I (unfortunately) work for (darn economy crash!) LOL 6) they saw you exit your vehicle and disliked your clothing or ethnicity
Either that or they don't like me cause im one of those very disliked "Polkadotted people" J.K.
WOW! I wasn't actualy expecting to be a popular thread COOL!

I agree with others that flat black looks very good when done right...to the right type of car. Some cars just can't pull it off (in my opinion).

I have yet to see a 1G or 2G flat black though in person. Plenty of beat up Honda's with 2 stock wheels and 2 after market wheels though.

The last car I saw that REALLY pulled it off was (go figure) a muscle car (GTO Judge). When my wife let's me get my 2G, I've contemplated testing out the flat black myself.

Honestly, i really like the flat black look. I came from a muscle car background, and growing up flat black was a common color i seen on cars. i also dig the flat black because it makes all the accents on your car stand out more.

and as far as the keying incident, sorry to hear about that...but you are not the only one. My poor car had battery acid dumped along the roof...imagine how my paint looked. Hence the black top on my car, had to make it look somewhat presentable.

+1 for flat black

I've never seen a bunch of old muscle cars in flat black. If they were, they were probably also a POS. People don't like flat black because it's ugly, looks like a primed, unfinished or amateur product, and reflects laziness/incompetence in the builder. If it actually does make it onto a nice car, it's just a fad that will soon look as bad as the rest. And how do you wax it anyways?

That's my opinion anyways, I just don't like it.

first...
i have a shop at my house, thats why they were in flat black. The primer we chose was black. Just because we had it in primer, dosent make it a pos.

secondly...
if you dont like flat black, dont put it on your car. If we like flat black, we'lll have it on our cars.

third...
you shouldn't wax primer, if you ever plan to paint the car atleast. If you do, your paint wont turn out to nicely. Flat black is not suppost to shine, thats why it isflat black....just sayin

i do not know where you guys' get your info from. i do not recall a old musle car being flat black.
now some of them came with flat-black hood, or other schemes, but not all black.
i think the reason that eveyone hates seeing a flat-black painted car is because 95 percent of the time, it was done using wal-mart special 98 cent cans. and when they spray bomb it, they let all the overspay get all over the glass, and trim. all the honds' i see flat black, all the trim and glass look horrible.
also, another reasone it is hated, is because once you put the spray-bomb on the car, if you sell it, the next owner will have to pay nearly double to get all that shit taken off of the car

another problem is everyone uses primer as their paint color. that is a big no-no. primer has a very porous surface, which lets water get in/under the paint, and it will eventually start to turn a brownish color, from the rust coming through

yeah, but this guy dosent sound like he's doing a half ass job here, i mean if he did..yeah it wouldnt look to good, but from what i seen, it looked pretty good

I didn't say I didn't like black primer. As long as it's getting covered up, doesn't matter. The OP was asking why it's hated so I gave my opinion on it.

I know you shouldn't wax it. So how do care for the finish? Bare primer isn't isn't a finished product. Like already said, it is not a finish, it's a bonding agent for a finish.

I'm not making fun, just talking. My wheels are flat/satin black actually. But it's paint, not primer.

I think alot of it has to do with ill fated attempts by some over zealous "tuners" to attempt to make theyre car look "raced out". below are some good examples of such ill fated attempts, note the splotchyness and tiger stripes, those are straight pimpin yo:thumb::barf: I pretty sure this is what most people think of when they put the words "flat black" and "import" together. In a pinch when you have 13 different color panels on your car or the paint is EXTREMELY damaged (like mine was) I think this is a perfectly viable TEMPORARY solution.

Gotta love the Mazda what the hell was he smoking & sharing none the less with a Honda what's the world coming to & by the way there are a few flat black Honda's up here & they all look like SH*T imo.

Bad thing on flat black (or any color in that matter) is that if you have oil on the hands and get it on that porous texture, good luck getting that hand print off of the hood ... let alone road oil and tar that flings up along the rocker panels..

I can see some kid purposely have greasy hands and leaving their marks all over the body of the car - be worse than having it keyed.

Plus, the many times tuners love to open their hood, you'll see wear where the hands have been more easier than if the surface was protected with a single stage paint or a clear coat finish.

Flat black done with spray can generally comes out looking like shit. I've seen a professional flat black job and just wow...world difference and it looked DAMN good. Matte black is also nice too when professionally done. One thing you can look into is the Rustoleum paint roller method which is very cheap and turns out looking pretty damn good IF YOU TAKE YOUR TIME.........

I love the flat black looks on DSM's i had 2 1g's, one was 1ga and another was 1gb and i had both of them done in, flat black, well it was actually primer.Oh and I did it with cans and that thing was really nice. I'll try to find old pics.

Yeah when its done poorly it does look like crap. I used a gun on mine and it only took about 1 1/2 qts of paint. I used the SEM trim black and it only cost about $25 per qt. Its not totally flat as it does have a bit of a shine to it when its clean. After all the body work was finished we used a gray epoxy primer, sanded it down, then used a gray filler primer to touch up the imperfections in the bumper covers before the paint was applied. The only real problem we had painting it was the striping that apparently happens naturally with flat paints. It was striping badly across the hood and doors mainly. On the final coat we ended up doing a heavy mist to get rid of the striping but this caused another problem. The reducer we used with the paint was a fast drying type and after the heavy misting this left a very rough surface on the entire car. I wet sanded the entire car and we applied one last coat. This time we used a slow drying reducer with the heavy misting all the roughness went away and I had a nice smooth paint job.

The only pic I have is of it sitting outside covered in snow and salt LOL but it looks pretty good when its clean.
