I have decided that the motor is going to be redone , I'm either going to have someone rebuild it or have it swapped with a crate. I work 7 days a week and have NO time to attempt to rebuild it myself nor have I ever rebuilt a motor so doing it myself is out of the question so. I've read all the threads on here about crate motors (all several years old) and would like to throw this out for discussion, hp goals aside who builds quality motors? My budget is gonna be around $4k for the motor.

Most of the vendors on here will build a crate motor that will do you just fine. I would personally stay away from the graveyards motors but thats just me. Too many horror stories about them.

most of the threads i read about the graveyard where stupid mistakes while installing the motor made by the customer. what makes a rebuilt 4g63 different from any other?

You obviously haven't read the reviews about customers finding sand blocking oil passages, sitting in cam and bearing journals, or crushed under pre-installed cams.

Some builders just slap engines together, without taking there time and paying attention to detail. But other vendors will take there time build it right with all quality parts, and make sure it will last. You say what makes a rebuilt 4g63 different from any other? Well what makes any engine install different than any other? All you need to do is drop it in, what mistakes is there to make other than spinning the oil pump?

So that brings me back to my question, most vendors? has anyone had experience with anyone on here building a motor for them? Unfortunately I just bought a rebuilt mhi evo3 16g from graveyard, don't have the product yet but I'm crossing my fingers its good, should have read the reviews:ohdamn:

Hey guys, we do understand you concerns about the engines. We have come a long long long way since 2008 when we started building crate engines for you guys. When we first started out, we had to outsource all of our machine work. This made the process for building engines extremely time consuming, along with trying to manage everything as a 2 person company. We have made our mistakes in production over the years (and did our best to warranty them), but they are few and far between now considering how many we build now (Around 3 a week, plus 5 cylinder heads, 5 Piston Rod Combo's, and Subaru here and there). We started selling Frankenstein Engines in 2008, with basically only a Hot Tank, and a Rod Hone. We built the entire company organically, and still are today. We currently have 9 employees, and are almost completely in self sustained. We have better equipment for cleaning than we ever have had, along with better quality control with more employees, spec sheets, and better measuring equipment, and the list goes on.

We appreciate the corrective criticism, we are always taking this serious and pushing ourselves as a team to be better and better every day. We are currently just finishing our machine shop remodeling, just after moving our retail store we lost to a real estate sale (Which is graveyardmotorsports.com) The good news is, that we are a LOT better that we where even 6 months ago. We even have huge plans of upgrading our site which I feel is outdated and can be better. Ill post a few pics up here so you can see our new setup, and understand what we are talking about.

Take it easy guys!

Magnus motorsport all the way, ams performance if they still bother with them

JNZ all the way for me, All my friends got them and there still running strong 50k miles later! Whenever I need a part I just run there and they have it in stock. They help you so much, and understand there customers!

Not that I'm defending any company here, But I know that this has to be somewhat like the news where if there is one murderer in your neighborhood you will here about it 10x more than what you here about the guy next door that saves 10 people a day.

The bad news hits home the quickest.

Really depends how deep your pockets go! Magnus, Buschur and MAP are the three I would go with for a crate motor. They are not cheap but in the long run you get what you pay for.

Well for the tuners like me that has a budget Buschur might be out of our price range. This is a email I received asking about a stage 1 rebuild from Nick Ryan over at Buschur on June 22, 12:

Well the problem with this is we no longer do the stage 1 blocks, it is our stage 3 or nothing at the current time as we can no longer get stock rods and pistons from the dealer ships.

I'm in the same boat as OP, I have low goals, just a nice clean 300-350hp daily driver. I've been looking at DSM graveyard for a cheaper stock rebuilt shortblock. Are there any other vendors I should check into? Anything anyone has to say that's particularly relevant?

build your own, there is somewhat satisfaction when you're done.

Yes. it takes time to do research and stuff....

You should see what the stock 6 bolt record is. You'll be fine with a stock motor for those goals.

You could always take it to a reputable machinist and order up all the internals. Thats what most of us do. I mean, your getting the same exact thing and it can be done locally within 6 weeks normally.

Keep the vendor reviews out of the forums, it's against the rules that everyone agreed to when you made your account here.

There are multiple shops known for their engine builds, some will be well over $4k for a long block build. My suggestion is to get down on paper what you want, 800hp isn't the answer either. Do some research for YOUR build include fuel mods, drivetrain mods, turbo mods, bolt-on's, and engine internals so you can get an idea of cost.

AMS Performance, Buschur Racing, FFTec, FFWD Connection, Jackson Auto Machine (JAM), Jay Racing, Magnus Motorsports, Modern Automotive Performance (MAP), Strictly Import Motorsports (SIM), and The DSM Graveyard are all shops that can build you a motor. When you contact them you had better know, or at least have a good idea, what you want for your build and see if they can keep it inside that price point.

Vendor reviews are posted here and only here, out of the forums. DSM Vendors - Directory
