Well I have never had a truly pure DSM before so after I pulled the engine out of my '90 GSX for maintenance and a transplant, I found this sensor that I had not unplugged and I haven't seen it before so can someone tell me what it is since the motor is going in my bone stock '90 Laser RS. All of the other DSM's I have messed with have always been modded and I haven't seen this one before. Thanks for the help! It is on the underside of the intake manifold so I missed pulling the plug off before yanking the engine out.

No, this is mounted on a bracket on the manifold support. The knock sensor needs replaced, as I looked at it and besides the pack rat that chewed the wire off, it also has the black goo stuff all messy plus it is screwed into the block....definitely an item that is being replaced before dropping into the other car. I haven't seen this before, but it is a pure stock '90 so it could be '90 related only, I just don't know. I figure the Laser has the same thing on it as it is also bone stock but I am at a loss as to what it is. It isn't the tach filter either. I unplugged it and it is on the side of the same bracket that this thing is on. This is the only thing I missed when unhooking everything, prepping for the motor pull and it pulled the wire in two of course. If it helps, it has a black with white stripe wire on it. Also, the wire coming off of this thing on the back side has heat wrap insulation on it as you can see the remnents of it dangling so I don't know where it went, but I bet the pack rat could tell me. Thinking about it now, maybe that wire on the back side DID go to the knock sensor and this is just where they put the plug in for it. Thanks guys!!

What you have circled is just a connector for a sensor. where do the wires go? Looks like they go to knock sensor in the picture. Only other thing I've seen back there on other DSM's are the connector for the EGR temp sensor (California Emissions models).

That is were the problem lies, the knock sensor wire has been surgically removed by Mr Pack Rat but I do have a feeling you are correct now that I think about it. I searched all over for the knock sensor plug and it was missing as the wires were gone so it's about a 95% chance you guys are right. I just have never seen it mounted before, it has always been a dangling wire on the other DSM's since that manifold bracket has always been missing.

The guys above are correct -- the only connector of that color (gray) in the 1G engine bay is for the knock sensor. That is the original mounting location for the sensor connector. As you said, Marty, the bracket is typically removed and when it isn't, the tab built in on the connector itself to hold it on the bracket is typically broken after all these years.

Gotcha Brian and thanks again. I was scratching my head when I saw I had pulled the motor and missed ONE dang wire but it was already chewed in two so it was replacement time anyway. This mystery is solved, consider it closed. I sure appreciate you old time DSMer's knowledge, that's why I hang out here!!! :thumb:

I wish I had thought about you last week, I was in OKC to visit all the "Street Outlaw" shops and could have swung by and met you in person, my bad but I will be back! I got my Nitrous bottles filled at "Daddy Daves" shop and just fooled around for most of the time with no itinerary at all.

Oh would it. This is the motor out of the "barn" find GSX that had sit under a tree since 1999 with 110,000 original miles on it and it was LOADED with his nest which you can still see remnents of on the side of the block, but it had a new recalled t-case (iron headed), fresh trans rebuild from Mitsu and a new 14b on it. It was ashamed that it couldn't have been repaired but it was just hit way too hard in the drivers rear to fix but I am putting all of the goodies to use in other cars so I am glad local gossip lead me to it a few years ago. I think Mr Pack Rat met his demise inside the car as I found a skeleton and a couple of snake skins in it :f-u: ....not my thing so I cleaned her out and now I am putting all of the parts off of the car inside of it to keep them out of the weather.

Yea, I have NEVER seen the manifold bracket on any cars so since Mr Pack Rat had chewed up some things it was hard to tell if that was the right connector. The knock sensor had been chewed down to the sensor with no wire on it so I figured he ate it...before the snake ate HIM LOL. Thanks Vic!!!! :)
