Alright guys, well I just finished my 14B install in my 95 GSX. All is well besides some minor oil leaks on the return line and the SS feed line at the filter housing. There was also a VERY minor coolant leak from the front banjo bolt on the turbo. I tightened it a tad and I think i went away. Now the turbo is spooling really late because I think there may be a leak before the turbo.
Now on to the problems.

1. The turbo does not smoke at all besides at WOT sometimes it blows out whiteish grey smoke. I'm trying to think of where it could be burning coolant. It never did this before the turbo install.

2. There was some white smoke the past 2 days at the manifold. I'm thinking its the shitload of PB Blaster that I sprayed all over the car but I'm not sure.

3. There's a smell coming from my engine that I can smell if I pop my hood and it becomes more noticeable when I'm driving and really get on it. It smells like burning plastic sort of, with a mix of burning rubber. The lower heat shield is not on the car because it's a pain to get on and I haven't put it back on because I haven't had time. Nothing is touching anything hot so I 'm confused...The only possible thing is maybe I pout on a new 4 ply exhaust mani. gasket as well as antiseize on most of the bolts and the turbo-mani. bolts.

Any help? Thanks.

A 'warhorse' topic .....

Nope. Teflon valve seals are above the valve itself in the head.

Won't have any affect on comp or leakdown tests.

The teflon had harden up so they're not flexible anymore to seal against the stem. Thus oil begins to slide past the harden teflon. Main seals and cam seals suffer the same fate down the road - get hard and oil slides past them.

In all due actuality, you're burning oil even at highway speeds, but you won't see it due to the slight amount that is being burnt off due to the hotter exhaust. At idle, the exhaust isn't that hot since much less fuel is burnt, and the oil isn't being burnt off as quick, thus it's just smoldering off the top of the pistons..and that's what you're seeing is smoldering oil.

Easy way to tell if you got bad rings or bad seals is to check the spark plugs. Wet and oily plugs is bad oil rings. Good looking dry plugs is valve seals.

Replace the seals and smoke goes away.

If I pull the valve cover off, is there anyway to verify/be certain that is the issue? Its between that and the turbo oil seal I'm pretty sure..

My plugs are clean and dry, btw. No oil present.

its your turbo and its only gonna get worse. mines been doing it for a month or 2 now but I havent had a chance to swap mine out. I have the same turbo as you and what started off as a little shaft play has now gotten progressively worse. If i stay out of boost/higher RPM's it wont smoke at all so thats what ive been doing. hopefully Ill get a chance to bolt on my 20g over the holiday..

The only thing that makes me think its not the turbo, is there's no in/out shaft play, and it doesn't smoke while building boost or high RPM's, at least not enough to see. I had a friend on his crotch rocket follow me and stayed a few feet from my rear end on the highway in the opposite lane while I got on it to see if it was smoking under boost, and it wasn't. And I don't even have to drive it, I can start it and let it idle for 5-10 min and it will start smoking.

I would swap the valve stem seals to start, simple reason is smokes when warm is the oil is thicker when cold and seals do not let it leak, when the oil warms up and becomes thinner then it can pass the seals.

How many miles on the head and/or seals?

I have found that when your valve stem seals are going bad they will smoke on startup. Bad piston rings will smoke during accelerating or under load. When the turbo seal starts to go bad it will smoke at idle then as it gets worse it will smoke during deceleration. It seems to me that there are very good topics on rebuilding your turbo on this site. It would be far less time consuming to go that route than to put in new valve stem seals. Hope this helps.

my talon is fine when i start it up and at idel but when i drive for a while it starts to smoke a little under boost but when i stop it starts to smoke more. i went driving around town yesterday for about an hour shifting at around 4g and boost is set at 15psi i pulled in my drive and parked it and it started smoking alot. i called the guy i bought it from and he said its normal but i dont think it is. what u guys think?

i did a compression before i had car runing because it wouldnt start but it was just the plug in wrong order but it was 150 onall four havnt done one recently, motor brake in is just driving around town slow speeds not trying to push it hard like i said about 200miles on it. white smoke

If it's why smoke then you are burning coolant, more than likely it's a head gasket issue. Oil burns a bluish color, that's what it would be if it were the valve stem seals.

Are you sure it's just white? Not a little colored.

ok its white smoke and i am burnig coolant but my radiator has a leak were the hose is, going to replace the radiator soon and i can smell coolant burning. i can notice smoke when im driving it smokes alittle once in awile then when i park it it starts to smoke alot but at cooled start and idel no smoke.

idk when i pulled in i was going in the house to grab somthing and notice it smoking so i shut it of but when i started it up a min later smoke was gone so i took it up the road easly and only notice alittle smoke when i parked again.
i dont no if this has to do with any thing but i had a supra smic and it blew a hose on the turbo so i t clamed it drove home parked it got a greddy fmic and blew the hose like 6 times before i got some kind of hose that i was told to get, wold that do some damage to the turbo?

What hose blew off? Was it an intercooler pipe? Or was it a coolant line to the turbo?

But bottom line is: White smoke = burning coolant. I would start with looking at the head gasket. Do a compression test, see if some of your cylinders are low. And trying a leak down test to see if you are leaking into the coolant system.
