Which turbo will be sufficient for consistent 11 second times? I've recently decided on a big 16g, but will that be big enough to run 11s with supporting mods and decent tuning? Remember, this is for a budget street car, so any one purchase over $1k is tough. A big 16g will run about $700-900, which is about $300-400 less than the larger alternatives.

Of course, I'll need lots of practice to run these times, but, I just want to make sure that it's possible before the money is spent.

The A/T Boost controller allows you to vary the firmness of the shift. If you dont have a built tranny, i cant see how it would be beneficial. If you put a translab shift kit along with just a reworked valve body, then i can see it work. This is also considering if you dont plan going for a full performance build.
I have not purchased this product as i didnt see anything wrong with the way the performance trans i have shifted. You can talk to john at IPT, he is extremely knowledgable and you could discuss your setup with him. If anyone else has more info on this product, please input . i'll try searching, as the product summary is rather vague. Check out his site i listed in my previous post. :thumb:

So are you saying that my transmission in stock form cannot handle anything over stock performance? I have a few parts cars I can take from if something breaks, but they are all 5 speed. I considered a 5 speed swap but thought it might be cool to have an automatic. Spool sitting at the line and keep full boost all the way down the track! Please correct me if I am wrong.

No, the stock tranny can handle A LOT of power. The end clutch is just a stronger part to prevent failure and the shift kit makes your shifts INCREDIBLY FAST. If anything, get the shift kit. It isn't TOO hard to install. There are some good write-ups on it. (I have installed 2)

I did not mean to kill your hopes for this project, i just did not want you to suffer should something break or the tranny does not satisfy your perfomance appetite.
With an end clutch kit and translab shift kit you should notice a huge difference. Trust me it wont give you that lazy shifting the stock one does. If you keep your power down to 400 whp, and with the above mods then it will handle it well. Good Luck bro :thumb:

As posted earlier, Dont forget since your car is auto most likely the turbo on it was a 13g which uses smaller coolant lines and banjo bolts. You'll have to order new ones for a 14b or 16g. Good luck.

I have finally finished installing my stroker in my 1g and I have been burning it up with a 50 trim for the break in period. The 50 trim currently has a .48 ar housing and is running a 5 bolt discharge. This is making a cut off point for the exausht flow right now and i am only getting around 400hp on pump at around 25psi. I want to go with a bigger turbo but i dont have a lot of money to spend on a tubular exaust manifold or anything other than the victory performance 02 5 bolt o2 housing. I dont want to go with any fancy ball bearing turbo until I can upgrade it all and get vband. So I am looking for a t3 turbo that can give me 500hp.

I have been looking on cheapturbos.com because they are a pretty good base line. I have been looking at either the t3 60-1 or the T3/TO4R "The Big Kahuna" or the T3/GT40 "BLOWZILLA". The 60-1 flows 61lbs and is the cheapest at 700. I like this turbo but I am just not sure it is enough. I am really thinking about the T3/T04R to because it flows a whooping 75lbs. This is a lot of flow and i dont think that my 5 bolt discharge and 38mm tail will be able to handle the job. I want to go bigger but I think it might be of diminishing value to get the bigger one with my setup. In other words I wont get as much hp for the money.
Btw I am running a turbonetics cast manifold

Any advice would be apreciated on which turbo to pick. Anyone that has had either of these turbos and can give me hp numbers or times so I can compare the two would be greatly apreciated. Thanks again.

Look into Precisions PTE-6152. It's a great turbo for power, if that's what you're looking for. A bit laggy, as all bigger turbo's are.

But for the price, it's a solid turbo. I actually downgraded from it to a 50trim turbo becuase the larger turbo's are not too much fun around town, which is the majority of my driving.

But if you want to go big, it's a good turbo.

There are so many out there to choose from and I am too new to the turbo world to match one to my needs. I am looking to be in the 400hp range, and I would like that to be WHP eventually with drivetrain mods. So, I am looking for a turbo that I can grow into over time. I am fine with running lower boost until I can tune correctly and supply enough fuel for 20psi. I will be running 450cc inj for a while before I decide what I want to upgrade to. So, I will run 50 psi fuel pressure to get about 515cc flow out of them. I have a 255 hp walbro & AFPR. I am running a MAF-T, so I can tune some. I do not have a datalogger, so I will only be tuning to the new injector flow rate until I get a cheap tuning solution, or can afford DSMlink. I had my eye on the Garret t3/t4 .63 a/r (I forget what trim) a few months ago when I started this project, but I have since forgotten why I chose it over a 16 or 18g. I am only in need for a turbo so quickly since my 14b is trashed. It is leaking oil into the exhaust and makes ALOT of smoke. I planned on using it until I decided what turbo to get, but that decision has been hastened. I can drive the car, but when it goes to boost...well you know the rest. So, it will sit until I get a turbo. Any help would be appreciated.

A 50 trim would be perfect for what you want as long as you do injectors at teh same time, 450's wont cut it. :thumb:

Like Joe said, a 50 trim turbo would do what you're looking for in a turbo.
However, you don't just want to bolt on a turbo that size without having the proper supporting mods.

You'll need to upgrade the fuel system, probably get some head studs, get a logger/tuning program, and many other things. It's probably smartest to just follow the upgrade path.

Or just do like I did, and save up $6000 and do it all at once.

Jay, is that true even if you can adjust your airflow back properly with the MAFT? At 50 psi my 450s will flow 515 cc, so I was going to go into the MAFT and adjust the base injector size to 515. I don't plan on changing any fuel mixture at idle, mid or WOT without a logger. I am just making sure before I do this.

Since he's asking about turbos. I was just wondering peoples thoughts on the 57 trim. I don't see it used alot so I figure there is a reason. Is it a bad setup?

A 50 trim will do you well. I would reccomend that you do all of the supporting mods first before your even think about installing the turbo. This will preserve the life of both the turbo and the engine.

If you raise the fuel pressure it will raise you air/fuel curve accross the whole curve. Then to compensate with the maft will work but you need a logger to see you fuel trims. Then to see you timing and knock at WOT. If you just turn up the FP you will be running real rich.

Thanks for the heads up on the whole fuel curve part. I have not yet started to learn about tuning, fuel or timing curves. So that was quite helpful. I have decided to go with an EVO III 16g and some FIC 650s. Seems like a sound setup for DSMs and after looking into 50 trims I realized that my pockets aren't that deep. I guess its a little harder to "grow into" something like a turbo. I will not see much track time and mostly will be a street driver, so I think I was shooting a little high. Thanks everyone for your input.

You can run a 50 trim in 450 injectors, just keep your boost low. I did it for about a year until I had the money to buy the rest of the mods. I did all ready have Supra fuel pump, AFPR, and a logger.

Go with a 50 trim, like everyone is saying. I just got the PTE 5031RE BB 50 trim from dejon. Again, you need all the supporting mods. I went with 850 cc, all the other fuel mods, full 3 inch exhuast, dsmlink, AEM wideband 02, etc.....

Jay is absolutely correct, no adjustments on either AFPR or MAFT should be done without logging capacity, especially when you can't even calculate the proper compensation on paper. :) 450 @ 50 psi BFP = 523cc on a 1G, not 515cc. Follow the upgrade path in the tech article section, your best bet is to pick up an used 14b/16g from a trust worthy member.

Well here it is, i know there is a better place to post this but i am not permitted to post there.I LOOKING TO UPGRADE MY TURBO IN A FEW WEEKS AND I WAS ORIGINALLY GOING TO GO WITH A 16G SMALL/BIG/EVO WHAT EVER, BUT THEN I WAS LOOKING AT BULLEYE TURBOS POSSIBLY 46 TRIM. I KNOW ITS A LITTLE LARGER TURBO AND CAN PRODUCE MORE. JUST WONDERING WHICH 1 I SHOULD GO WITH. THANKS 4 THE HELP ON MY DECISION.
