Which turbo will be sufficient for consistent 11 second times? I've recently decided on a big 16g, but will that be big enough to run 11s with supporting mods and decent tuning? Remember, this is for a budget street car, so any one purchase over $1k is tough. A big 16g will run about $700-900, which is about $300-400 less than the larger alternatives.

Of course, I'll need lots of practice to run these times, but, I just want to make sure that it's possible before the money is spent.

Since it already has big injectors, you might as well go with a 50-trim (FP Green or SCM50). You could get away with something bigger but you'd need a better fuel pump and some other things in order to really take advantage of it.

It sounds like a 50-trim would fit you just fine.

You're goals aren't very clear. The Evo 16gs seems to be doing great. So if you want a turbo that'll still spool quick on the streets and get you just into the 300hp range then I'd say go for that. If you're aiming more at 400hp and don't mind a little lag, then go with a 20g/50trim sized turbo.

The 16gs spool up to fast and would spin my wheels really bad especially since i dont have a limited slip. A 16g would be good if i was only racing from a roll, but i want it to be able to go from a roll, have enough top end to make up for the lack of traction in the 1/4, and have the top end to be a highway monster. I think i'm gonna go with the 50 trim. If i do how hard would the instillation be, compared to a 16g or even a 20g?
thanks

50trim/20g's install pretty similarly to each other, and there is a little more involved then a 16g install. It's not tough, at all really. I'd say the hardest part would be if you have to "reshape" the coolant pipe infront of the block. And that's really not difficult, just give it a little whack and dent it in just slightly. If you get an Oil Cooled turbo, then what I did was just cut the ends of the coolant lines and attach a piece of rubber hose inbetween them, because coolant won't be passing through the turbo anymore. For the oil, get a braided feedline, those are cake to install because they are flexible. It's really not tough, you'll be able to figure it all out when you're doing it.

Well I think i'm gonna go with a forced performance green. I appreciate all the help and i'll let ya know how the instillation goes.
thanks

No i probably wont buy it new from fp, but if i end up having to buy from them i might talk to someone about those turbos, and i know this question has been answered somewhere, but i've done so much searching in the past couple of days i cant take it anymore. Would i still be able to use my stock intercooler for a little while untill i get the money to put a front mount, and when i put a front mount on would i have to change anything with the turbo set up?
thanks

You're car will still run with it hooked to the stock smic yes, but i wouldn't go around racing it because it will heatsoak damn quick. Just take it easy on the car until you can get a front mount on there.

Ok I am gonna need a new turbo because my 14b is shot. Im thinking I want to get a 16g but i dont really know what im looking for. Is it a bad idea to buy used turbo? I really need to get one asap so im thinking i want to buy it from a good online store. Im gonna find out tommorow if my friend wants to sell his 20g. You guys have any recomendations for my turbo purchase?

yea i wont be able to check them out in person though. Im thinking itll be better to buy new unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Most turbos have alittle play side-to-side. It is the IN-and-Out play that will kill the turbo.

Buying used is ok. Some shops have used turbos at good prices, other than that i would only trust some of the guys that have been on and around here for awhile. Just seen too many people get screwed over by people they don't know.

Go to your area in the boards that shows all of the guys that live around you. Check it out and see if anyone has a turo to sell.

i won't recommend that you buy a used turbo from anybody that's not local or anything cause it might have shaft, leaks or other problems and also you might get ripped off like me.

Right now I have a Walbro 190 fuel pump. Going to rewire it soon.

Plan on getting RC 550s.

What would be an appropriate turbo for this setup? I want to be in the low 13s, high 12s. Thanks.

I have a sm16g right now.. I was thinking about that.

You're going to have a hell of a time getting times that low in a FWD.

550's and a 190 are only good for the 3 incarnations of the 16g. anything larger should require 660s and a 255 pump.

if i were you, i'd invest in a LSD and some suspension upgrades. thats the only way you'll be getting that 60' down and cutting good times

My goal is to go fast, i hate turbo lag. It doesnt matter to me about times because i never go to the track. I have many supporting mods, except, fuel system, but i had just ordered the 255, 660, and safc.

Basically my turbo is not working in my car now, i want to find the best turbo for my car, about 1000, as easy to install (bolt on) im really new to the whole turbo scene, and have read alot about the ones out there but i just dont get what im looking for in them.

the big t28 killer, t3/t4, 20g

something along those lines, i do not want to have to purchase a new turbo after this one

Please let me know what u guys think and where i may be able to purchase one of these, FAST...cause my car is not moving now.

t3/t4=not easy
20g=lag
Stay away from turbos that have to use "killer" in their discription, they never are.

Based on what you said, this is the turbo for you;

or

Exchange your 255 pump for a 190, or get a AFPR.

Hi, this isnt exactly a "which turbo" question. This is my first turbo car and have no experience upgrading a turbo on a car. I am looking for more power for my daily driver without making it undriveable or spending a ton of $$$. I am considering the mitsu big 16g ($650) or for $50 more, the t3/t4. My mods right now are: walbro 255lph pump, mbc, greddy hard piping, greddy type s bov, autometer boost and oil psi, and a K&N fipk which i will be replacing with an injen intake. I know I need exhaust work, but I want to find a turbo-back set up that will work with the turbo I buy. So that will wait until I decide on the turbo. I just need some guidance because this can either make or >break< my car. thanks alot guys! -Matt
p.s. I know to follow the tuning guide (which I have thus far) I am looking for more personalized help such as which manifold I will need for which turbo and what else I will need to get the job done. Thanks.

For a lot of turbos (14b, all 16g's) you're going to need a 2g install kit which is about $200 extra. I suggest the evoIII16g.

I was also looking at the Evo III but I am not sure the difference between that and the big 16g. I am not even sure the difference between those and the t3/t4 OMG I am searching the classifieds for a pocket logger set up right now, and I was planning on doing the safc when I did the turbo. I am really looking for better performance with minimal tuning (until I can teach myself more about tuning). Thanks alot -Matt
