Which turbo will be sufficient for consistent 11 second times? I've recently decided on a big 16g, but will that be big enough to run 11s with supporting mods and decent tuning? Remember, this is for a budget street car, so any one purchase over $1k is tough. A big 16g will run about $700-900, which is about $300-400 less than the larger alternatives.

Of course, I'll need lots of practice to run these times, but, I just want to make sure that it's possible before the money is spent.

It was an estimate. I've put $13k into my GST.....
Then someone raped you hardcore (no lube)
First off to think about it just to prepare for an FP Green (what I want)
Fuel Pump/Injectors - $455-500
SS Oil Lines - $20-25
New Lifters (just to spend money so it doesn't tick) $180
Evo Mani/o2 housing - $300
External 40MM Tial Wastegate - $230
FMIC Kit or DIY Piping -$650-$900
FP Green Turbo - $1,300
Total: $3,435
And that's going off the higher end prices. If you found half this stuff on eBay or got cheaper/different items you would save a bunch of money. I am getting my FMIC fabricated by Jim McKeone and will not be spending $900 on the Greddy kit. I will probably end up spending $650 or so.

Oh yea I forgot to add DSMLink to tune.... $4,135 still a lot less then you guestimated that you spent on your car. I hope the interior is made of gold or something because I feel real sorry for you.

Interior RICE: $180

OK, I was wrong. Total= $10,604

I just sold the big28 for a 20g and it was about an even trade so I didn't update the list. LOL, not sure where I got $13k from...

Ok he just wanted to know how much for the TURBO set up, not your rice, nice, ice, splice, whatever. Suspension is NOT a must and neither is a lot of the stuff you tallied in your total. They are leisurely and just nice things to have

Yes I realize this, but money spent = money spent. I just copy+pasted that list from another thread.

This is the t3/t4 i was talking about:

with a 50 trim and .48a/r also i think ill have to go wtih the 5bolt pattern since i wanna keep it interaly gated

5 bolt pattern? Your exh. manifold and o2 housing are 4 bolt patterns..... WTF are they refering to to make it 5 bolt?

Also, you're better off going with an external wastegate on a 50 trim.

edit:

if you want to keep it internally gated, go with a TD05 20g. That's about the biggest you can go and not get creep issues. Even then you may require some fancy porting to keep creep to a minimum.

thats what i thought too.. i thought we were all 4bolt but that website says otherwise... where can i find that 20g thats interally gateable? do you have a website that carries it? it will all be ported too both the 02 housing and the manifold before its all put in.. im making a winter project out of it because i have another car to drive inthe mean time

oh yeah one more question... once i get the turbo what else will i need so i dont forget anything.. what size injectors, Safc, and will a 190 rewired pump work?

I'm in the process of purchasing a 1st gen Turbo DSM to begin a build on and one thing that I'm pretty new to is turbo's. I don't want to do anything overkill, but I would like to make good power.

I am looking to make around 350 whp, but I want something that makes a lot of torque. Of course I plan on doing other engine mods (intake, full turbo back, cams, headwork, ect.)

If anyone could suggest a turbo, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks guys

Zach

Guys frankly I know very little about Turbos. I have this 1991 GSX and is purely stock I am looking to upgrade it plus full 3" exhaust... Would it be a good Idea to leave my Stock Turbo on and slap a 3" Exhaust or Replace it and with what size Turbo (considering I will leave it stock for the rest of the year!) or change the Turbo and Exhaust to 3"??? What would you guys recommend... I am wanting to make a beast out of my GSX for AutoCrossing...
Thank You!

the 14B turbo on 1gs is an upgrade for us 2g guys and its a pretty strong turbo, people have run 12s on it with everything else on the car being worked. it has a good max HP rating for a stock turbo and spools pretty quick i would say keep that or get a B16G but thats probably not necessary. i would say get supporting mods and build around your turbo first :thumb:

edit:

oh and if youre only gonna do a few mods to this thing for a while, taking off the airbox or just getting a real intake, and putting a nice flowing exhaust will help a lot

Well, since you mentioned autocrossing and your car is still stock, I'd concentrate on maxing out the stock 14b and spend your money on realizing it's full potential and modifying your suspension. Of course, that depends on what class you want to run in. Stock class is D Stock for AWD DSM's. You can run a catback exhaust and a K&N filter, but that's about it. Anything more than that, and you're going to be classed in STX.

The biggest annoyance you're going to come across is the "speed sensitive" power steering. Basically, the pump lowers the pressure to the steering rack at higher RPM's, so when you're coming into a corner fresh out of a downshift, it makes turn in tough on the arms. The other thing is that the GSX understeers like a pig when pushed hard and really benefits from a thicker rear swaybar. Then there's the brakes. Early DSM's come from the factory with single piston calipers up front and too small discs. I beat those to a pulp on the street in my 90 in about two weeks before upgrading to the later model 2 piston setup which I got from a junkyard. The 3000GT SL brakes are the same, so pick up a set from your local junkyard...unless you like the smell of burning pads and no stopping power. I'm actually on my third set of rotors, I warped the larger stock units after a few months of hard driving, so now I'm running slotted Brembo rotors with EBC Greenstuff pads. These are holding up quite well.

For the power, start out with the 3" exhaust, an upgraded fuel pump, a boost gauge and a boost controller set for 16psi. There's still quite a few horses to be had from the 14b before you give it up and quite a few mods to be made before you really *need* a bigger turbo, anyway. Then, spend some money on the suspension...it needs help

Don't forget your timing belt first, especially if you're not sure of when it was done last.

I will be looking unto the Timing Belt and all other accessory belts for a change soon. Who sells the best 3" full exhaust for my car??? Where can I get Good Timing Belt??? And, How much would I be expected more or less to pay for the Brake Upgrade??? Oh yeah! I found out today that my Manifold is cracked in 3 different places where can I find a good replacement and what would I be looking at $ for it???
Thank You Guys!

you need a turbo that spools quick and dosent create a lot of heat and low to medium boost levels(12 to 18 psi) the 14b starts to make a lot of heat at 18+ psi and will probly heat soak your stock intercooler quickly causing knock and loss of power. i personly would go with a small 16g turbo, the needed full mods and maybe a alamo big sidemount intercooler if you can find one or the griffin 216 front mount intercooler kit. your might call and consult with the guys at road race enginerring....

i forgot to add that i got a set of the "big" duel piston front calipers and brackets if your interested...do some searching about the "stock" big brake upgrade

www.rnrracing.com sells quality exhausts for a really good price. only downside is theyre usually a 2-3 week waiting time but if u dont need it right away they got good deals.

the 2nd gen manifolds are an exellent upgrade for 1gs, they flow really nice some people dont even buy a header and just port them out. you can pick one up pretty cheap on ebay or dsmtrader.com and get it ported if u want, or just bolt it on it flows better than the 1g in stock form anyway

For autocross, I have heard that the evoIII is the way to go. It spools up just as quick as a 14B but once it starts pulling it pulls hard and it pulls longer to having the point of a greater top end. Great damn turbo is my experience from word of mouth.

I'm about to get a 96 talon tsi and i was wondering what the best turbo would be for it. It's going to be my daily driver, at least for a little while, so it cant be huge were it would ruin my daily driving, and i dont wanna have to mess with an external gate either, but at the same time i want a turbo big enough to give me lots of top end even if it comes a lot later in the rpms. I really wont be running more than 20 to 22 psi of boost, and most likelly it'll be more between 15 to 18. The 16gs and 20gs are really the only turbos i have looked at in depth, but i have seen many other people talk about different types of 50 trims performing better.

The car has a turboxs blow off valve upper intercooler piping, full 3 inch intake, 3 inch exhaust and hopefully soon a 3 inch dp, It will also have a turbo xs or joe p manual boost controller. It's also has a s-afc, 255lph pump, 720cc injectors, autometer boost, egt(not hooked up yet) and oil pressure gauge, but the car isnt tuned yet but will be within a week or 2 of the turbo being put on.

I've looked at every turbo i could find and i still cant decide so help me out, and easy instillation is a plus seing as i havent worked on the turbo cars much, and i will need it running as quick as possible.
thanks
